From real world experience how many 2 (4 foot) bulb LED light fixtures would you put in? I was guessing 20...12'-0" ceiling height...with a white metal ceiling...and plain non painted ply wood walls. I was figuring every 10' apart in each direction. I know I like a well lit shop. I know have some choices on bulbs also concerning the brightness.

I have a 48x48 and I did 24 4' fixtures. I also have 12' ceilings with white tin. The led tubes are 5000k non frosted. I think it's enough light. I plan on putting the steel on the walls too. We'll see how it is once I get everything moved in and my tube heaters mounted, but this should give you an idea.

Looks like I figured about right. Thanks for posting that. One thing is the led price wise is pretty decent. Cheap compared to what I had in me last shop.

Have you looked at the sticky notes at the top of this section? There are a number of garage layouts with lighting arrangements already prepared, chances are there's one in there someplace that's close to your situation.

Well gphil I know it was a typo but a 36" (inch) x 48" (inch) room is tiny, sorry it's the carpenter side of me.

Farmall that looks good, do you know what lumen the fixtures are? I'm doing a 24' x 40' x 10' 6" wood shop and looked at 12,000 lumen lights, 85 watts. Using the Visual program I was getting 124FC with 12 fixtures at bench height, I'm thinking 8000 or so might work better.

The tubes I believe are 3000 lumen each, two per fixture.

Oh hell I for got to say it's for a doll house...haha...yep I should have caught that. It's getting closer for some wires. Finishing up the drying in part. Things take a little longer when it just two old guys. My father and myself. But I enjoy every minute of It. I sure hope I can get around like my dad when Im 70.

I have 15 6 bulb T5HO high bay fixtures in my 36x48 shop. They draw 5000 watts and give off a beautiful bright white light. I’m not sure how many lumens at a 36” work plane it has but it’s plenty bright for me.

How far apart you have them? That can get pricey couldn't it? I guess it just all depends on the amount of light you would like to have. Seems like it almost be a wash because I would need 35 two bulbs and only 12 of like the ones you have. Guess it depends on the route you take. But I wonder if the spacing a role in all this with different fixtures? My last 30 x 40 I had 9 4 bulb T8 florescent. It was alright...but could have been a little better. It was before the LED craz tho.

They are in an evenly spaced 3 by 5 grid. It just happened that the bottoms of the trusses lined up that way and since I have no ceiling I went with it. Here are some photos from during my ceiling insulation install.

Edit: The fixtures were cheap on Craigslist from a grocery store retrofit. I only really get to use the shop on weekends and I bet they are on less than twenty hours a week. For me power consumption is less of a concern than getting good light output. How many hours a week will your lights be on?
