I'm out on travel and vacay, headed from Richmond, VA to my parents' farm in Culpeper. Yesterday, I hit two thrift stores on the east side of Richmond with no joy, but the ReStore in Hanover was success.

I was pawing through the buckets in the tool department when a lady working there dumps a few hammers into a tub I had yet to search. When I got down there and was perusing the hammers, she came back and dumped more tools in another tub. I suddenly realized she was sorting and pricing a fresh donation, so I followed her back to where she and another lady were working. With permission, I opened a Heritage-era C-man hip-top toolbox they hadn't started on yet and started picking.

Blackhawk 49977 ratchet
Craftsman DOEs
Craftsman non-marking hammer
No name brass plumb bob--heavy!
Stanley No 46 Yankee pushdrill with a compete set of bits in the handle!
New Britain ratcheting DBE
Westline DBEs
Bridgeport DBE
Heller smooth-jawed Masterench, 8-inch size
Penncraft 10-in adjustable
Three USA-made no-name c-clamps

The Craftsman socket set seems complete, but I can't tell if the contents are period correct. The socket sides are tapered, almost bullet shaped. Can any of you Crafty SMEs advise?

My final price was a dollar per tool, except for the socket set and the Blackhawk ratchet, which were two dollars each.

There's our host leading by example right there! :)

Have you guys ever had the kind of day where you buy some things just to justify the trip? Because you hate to go home empty handed? Here is my "Obligatory" haul from this morning.

I have found several of these wartime [PLUMB] 4 oz ball-pein hammers (GMTK) over the years, some with a little martial "U.S." stamp, which this one doesn't have. I don't really need this one.

I don't know if I need the Williams socket, but it's a 31/32" service opening, not too easy to find, so. Others are Cornwell.

The fold-up rule is a STANLEY No. 62.

Nothing special about the old-fashioned hammer holder, I just liked it.

Three garage sales this morning netted me these! Nice Ryobi One saw, a really nice clamp like new, some wrenches; Bonney, Craftsman & Williams. A German Tri-Handle Phillips screwdriver and bag of brass & copper!

I picked the right estate sale to go to this morning. Immaculate condition butterfly ratchet tool set in an equally pristine box. No trouble dating this one as it came with the receipt. Sold in November of 1964 for 39.99 (325.14 in todays dollars). I'll scour the catalogs to see what all came in this as I think there may be some add ons in there. No surprise, the only thing missing are the three T handles for the breaker bars. I envision an island somewhere that's loaded down with all the missing T bars. Paid 125, would have gone much higher to bring this home.

Other takes from the day. Long C tap and die set (complete), 4 diamond nested pliers, a couple of grinder attachments that are in ratty boxes but appear unused, a CI combo wrench that I need for a set, a Long C bevel gauge and a Long C wood boring bit that's also unused. Also picked up a "Speedy-Ratch" that I've seen here in another thread. This one works perfectly, really interesting design. Rounded it out with a couple of tool racks for the bench.

My phone doesn't have the drool emoji available, otherwise I'd give you a dozen of them! Nice snags, JoCo!

I'm not a Crowntop logo era guy, but that set is immaculate. It's no wonder the receipt is in it. It looks like it was bought and never used. (And for the record, Long C roller, "Indianhead" era Blackhawk No. 4 set, and virtually complete NOS Crowntop set, in box... you are no longer bordering on scorching hot streak, you are on fire.)

Also picked up a "Speedy-Ratch" that I've seen here in another thread.

Some weeks, that seems to be the entire story, right there.

(unfortunately, I can’t get my eecummings homage formatted quite right)

My own experience amounted to $15, plus breakfast with Mrs LS at the Schnecksville Diner, and netted a longC 1/2” chisel, Stanley sweetheart screwdriver, a small Bridge Tool Co pliers, a Bonney PWA DBE, a Newport PA Vacuum Grip dikes, and a Utica end nipper.
I spotted a Schroeder Bros Mfg Co Torrington CT hacksaw, but passed on it, as I have similar hacksaws falling off pegboard hooks in my basement. Also passed on a big Proto rubber mallet, because it wasn’t priced and the handle would need a whipping a la Lugz.

Pierce Arrow razor blade holder.
That's interesting. Whenever the PIERCE in an arrow logo tools show up, there is a debate about what they are. Some people claim they're all car kit tools. Others have said that's not so. I forget the explanation. Your razor blade holder seems to give credence to the latter. Or at least for some degree of ambiguity.

I wonder if it could tie in, though - “a ride so smooth, you’ll shave on the way to work”?
Edit- oops! I didn’t look at the pics first. Maybe it’s for P-A drivers to scrape bugs and bird droppings off the windshields?

Those Ryobi cordless saws are great. My parents have one and it's my favorite for carpentry work out on the farm.

Nice haul! I'm far from a Craftsman SME but I'm learning as I go. That ratchet is a "first generation raised panel". Introduced in 48 and only available in sets until the following year. First rat Moore Drop Forge made for Sears. In 52 or 53 (?) they added a dished out design in the neck of the rat so yours would date somewhere between 48 and then. The box is correct as they were transitioning to the Heritage logo at that time. Nice find!

Thanks gents. I figure the meteor is going strike any minute now and put an end to my streak. The Moore Drop Forge era is where my interest in Craftsman ends and I'd been trying to piece together a "birthday box" of tools that had sold when I was born. It had been slow going to get nice looking pieces but this box was one shot one kill. And thanks for the yanking my chain thread Lugz, that's what made me pick that Speedy-Ratch up. I'd have not known what the hell it was had it not been for reading your thread.

Nice find JoCo!

I hit about 8 sales today and came home empty handed. I did have a pretty decent Craigslist haul the other day so maybe I'll round everything up and take some photos just so I have something to post.

What do you think this drawer full is worth?

dsphotohandler.ashx

The online auction noted that some are craftsman, but not all :headscrat

There is also a full drawer of HF spring clamps and another with files and other goodies.

So I bid on this lot and got it for $27, knew there was some good stuff in there but wasn't sure exactly what I got..

I was hoping for more complete sets, but there is a ton of good stuff there.
A lot of the snap-on stuff looks unused.

I'm keeping all the ratchets (unless someone REALLY wants one) and the snap on and a few other sockets, but if someone needs something to complete a set just let me know.

Misc. stuff 10 files, misc burrs, adjustable brace bit, some planisher type thing and a hunk of steel and driver tips oh and 126 spring clamps...

Not sure if anyone is a Walking Dead fan I spotted a possible Mossberg near Maggie in an episode I was watching a while back. Kinda cool.

Wow Guys! lots of suckworthy scores!:thumbup::thumbup:
Wish it were running like that here!

Light day, as I mentioned Rain chased most of the sellers away. I had 3 planned stops and found one TOO.

First stop was Zippo, second had this chair for four smackers. While it needs new cloth, and the wood refinished, the frame is SOLID, and the padding is for the most part, good to go! a bit of collapsing on the front edge, but that is an easy fix.

The main stop was an estate sale of some guy thst fancied hinslf to be an inventor? (Found half a box of embossed pencils, I may shoot for thos on half off day...). a LOT of interesting stuf, including a lab oven ("low" temp - not a kiln) but was $$ so was left. Also left an anvil/vise thst soemone else added to their pile for $75 :headscrat

What I DID get was a full can of Coleman fuel, (not sealed like the last one but plumb full...)

attachment.php

And the stuff fin the lower left: a section of the smallest rail in my collection at this point, Rain bird wrench, AlumASeal, little Wiss Snips and half hiding is a leather punch for embossing

Last planned stop had the Driver, an Irwin Bell System (Jeff Alert!), some CL knock off nutbesters from Centauro (Spain), and a tiny hatchet, less than a pound, steel handle included! No

The TOO contribution were the 2 Monster 3MM cables, and the odd LED Bulb. Plan that for a small work light.

Hit an estate sale yesterday. Retired doctor who had a "tool room" off his garage. It had been hit pretty good Thu during a pre-sale sale. Managed to come away with some smalls. They had a like new Dunlap 0-1" micrometer without a price on it. The gal checked with the owner and came back with a $200 price tag on it. I would have paid $5, probably $10 considering it had the box and looked unused. The idgits that price off something they see listed on ebay are laughable.

Just liked the look and feel of the little brush. When I got it home I saw the Fuller Brush Company stamped on it. Cool! A couple of Klingspor polishing blocks, an old Craftsman crown polishing wheel with an adapter to let me use it on my cordless drill, two NOS 6" Anchor grinding wheels, X' of 6" 180 grit sandpaper which I'll use to clean up a handful of vintage Stanley planes, a spool of very narrow gauge wire, Stanley circular rasp which I can use with the cordless drill again (seems like something that some day will come in very handy), bit of leather to use for sharpening, box of 9 dental picks of different flavors, small leather strop on a board, Eclipse 36 honing guide for sharpening chisels and plane irons, a no-name handheld vise/clamp (made in Japan & will definitely come in handy) and lastly a couple of "vises". This guy did jewelry and watch repair it seems. The "vise" with the alligator clips has Dixon stamped on the base. I didn't find it googling so if anyone has info I'd appreciate it. It looks like it could come in handy one of these days. The other "vise" is totally shopmade which I dig. Used a block of aluminum for the base, the main stem is an old vise screw. Kind of cool. Most of the stuff was $1-$2 or less. I really like picks like yesterday where there are a number of smalls I've been hoping to come across and do all in one place.

Those pastry/basting brushes were giveaways back in the day. We had a bunch as my dad started learning sales with Fuller brush. I would not be surprised if my mom didn't still have a couple...

Even I took a stab at if in HS, but I soon quit as the area I was assigned was an area of low income and NO ONE would open a door to a stranger. Manager told me I needed ot "develop the area."

Eff that... a buddy had a GOOD area and took me over there, I did part of one street had 5 sales in 5 houses, and outsold him the hour of so we were there. HE was the top salesman in the district. any wonder why? it was all about the area. (I doubt anyone can make a go of door to door sales anymore)

That was my first, last, and only "sales" job..

I just noticed it doesn't say "Pierce", but says, "Arrow" inside of the arrow. Reckon that is still Pierce Arrow?

I thought I had a decent haul today until I caught up with JoCo’s treasure trove but here goes anyway. GJ member Shiftless pointed out a sale in Richmond and we met up with him there. We found a few tools there (first picture) and headed home. We took the scenic route through the hills and spotted an estate sale sign so we checked it out. There were some Plomb DBE wrenches and plenty of Craftsman. I also grabbed an interesting toolbox.

Well, thanks to an old ebay listing and April 1950 Popular Science,

Had a nice little Saturday antiquing. Not much in terms of tools, but I did manage to get a decent deal on the ratchet.

I'm such a child...

That's a nice haul! Love the 3/8" drive set. Plomb doesn't turn up much in my world.

No. There was an Arrow Tool Co. I had an 8" adjustable with that logo. Only one I have ever seen. I sent it to someone on GJ in a trade. Can't remember who. It was a fun trade. I cant even remember what I got but he insisted I just surprise him, and that's what I sent. He loved it. I'll try to find the old pics tomorrow night. I'm on the road. If you search on 'Arrow Adjustable' you may find it first. :)

I got this Oliver no. 153 woodworking vise off Letgo today. My 1st ww vise. 10" jaw, 12" opening, gotta weigh 40 lbs. Quick set thread. It was $40, seemed pretty solid and larger than most ww vises I've seen so I took the plunge.

While on my work trip, I was able to swing by an auto swap in Puyallup WA, finding the following:

So, a 1MT bit, Plomb, Proto, and Williams sockets, Craftsman BE ratchet, flying V flex ratchet, =V= breaker bar, and Heritage socket spinner box. Oh, and a Proto ratcheting adaptor:

That needs some work internally, but no way I was going to pass that up.

I want to find one of those Flying V flex head ratchets badly. Hopefully I will find one for a you **** deal at the swap meet this year !
