40v DeWalt batteries fit 36v DeWalt tools!

As the title says, DeWalt has confirmed to me that the newer 40v batteries will fit their old 36v tools. In all the internet searching that I have done on this subject looking for elusive 36v batteries at a reasonable price, I never once saw this mentioned. Last week I started a thread here on GJ looking for information and advice regarding the quest for reasonably priced 36v tools. Lacking any answers to the problem, I reached out directly to DeWalt. This is the response I received from them:

Thank you for contacting us.

I do apologize for the delay in my response. DeWalt has not abandoned the 36v tools. Although that 36v battery is no longer available, you can use a 40v battery. The part number for the battery is DCB404. That battery is available thru Amazon, Northern Tool and in a 2pack thru Walmart.com.

As a one time courtesy, the order has been placed to have 2 of those batteries sent to you. Please allow 7-10 bus days and you will receive them thru UPS. please dispose of the dead batteries at your nearest battery recycling center.

I'll let you guys know when the batteries arrive with info on how they fit and work. I wanted to post this for all of you who have might these tools laying around unused because of the battery situation. Also, I'm hoping that the info will come up now on an internet search engine search for others looking for the same information.

Thanks again for all those who reached out to try to lend assistance. I guess I should have reached out to DeWalt sooner!:lol_hitti

That was a generous move on Dewalts part to respond with free batteries. Good for them.

If it’s really her name, I feel bad for her. Can you imagine answering the phone for a tool company all day and having to go, “thanks for calling DeWalt, this is Cinnamon, how can I help you?” And then having some old guy go “your name is what now?” Repeated 50 times a day.

That's nice that they allow the batteries to be interchanged, considering the internals are probably identical. I get not allowing batteries from other brands, and batteries from other legit voltages to be used. But just changing the name from 18 to 20 (for example) and then trying to promote it as somehow better and making them not interchange is just plain rude!

I'm wondering who the first vehicle manufacturer will be that will start claiming they use an all new "14 volt" car battery too lol

They fundamentally changed how the batteries attach. They did, however, provide an adapter -- unlike any other company on the market. They all have to move on sometime. :thumbup:

Never mind, DeWalt just contacted me again, the batteries DO NOT fit!

I just got another message from DeWalt, apparently the first agent was incorrect. The 40v Dewalt batteries DO NOT FIT the 36v tools. Here's what they sent to me:


Thank you for contacting us.

I apologize for any inconvenience. Seems the information the previous agent provide you is incorrect that would be correct for our other line which is Black and decker. On our Dewalt line the 36 volt to the 40 volt is not compatible. The hardware and form of the the 40v is different and will not work. As far as information on any exchange program if still available you will need to contact our Factory Service Center I have placed the information below. They are not open on weekends they will open on Monday I apologize for any inconvenience have a great day!

So much for that. Sorry for posting incorrect info, it's what DeWalt had sent to me at the time.
