Mr.X identified the marking on the S-wrench pictured in post #2159 just above. The logo is an arrow in a diamond piercing D and E. It stands for Diamond Edge, a trademark of the Shapleigh Hardware Company of St. Louis, MO.

My research had determined that Herbrand had made a S-wrench this size that was identified as 681B, so I assume that Herbrand supplied this wrench under contract to Shapleigh. I am guessing it was made in 1928 or not long after.
That's a nice, rare find, Jock. But many mfgrs made S wrenches with 6XX series numbers. Williams, firstly. I commented in more detail on the DOE thread.

Nice small haul from the flea market this morning, which felt good after missing my Thursday and Friday fleas. (I was at Ft Huachuca all week).

XL (18") 3/8-inch drive Bonney extension, a brass antique era Goodell (pre-Millers Falls) spiraling drill, Snap-on 1/4-inch drive stubby spinner (50's), and a Snap-on 1/2-inch drive clutch type ratcheting adaptor (20's).

Thanks, 3bay. The early ratcheting adapter is still de-rusting, but I posted close-ups of the Octo-Grip TM-40S in the Snappy thread, here.

I also posted a lot of close-ups of the Goodell Brothers (1891-1899) brass spiraling push drill on Woody's Goodell-Pratt thread, linked here.

Well, I wouldn’t recommend driving an hour and a half for what I saw today. Yesterday’s rain had a dampening effect on seller turnout.
Generally, Saturdays don’t seem as productive as Sundays. I’d expect better tomorrow, but I have a commitment that will keep me away (my very last swim parent banquet EVER).
Holiday weekends are three to four times better than average weekends. Jake’s is open 7am-1pm, and starts dying around noon.
Blue Ridge Flea Market near Saylorsburg PA also opened this weekend, and may be a shorter drive? I try to get there two or three times a summer, but I don’t have my finger on its pulse enough to know its best days.
I hope to stop in Quakertown Farmers & Flea Market tomorrow, and will file a report.

Thanks - I'm just looking for a general "steer" if Jakes is worth a shot on any given weekend. We went to the Allentown Garage Sales last Sunday after seeing your post on Saturday about it.

We go to Blue Ridge Flea market several times a summer - it's 1 hour from home - all highway driving.

Mrs No_Garage and I went to the Golden Nugget Flea in Lambertville this AM - it was about 40% full of vendors. I picked up a rusty 5" butterfly handled C-Clamp for $2.00. After some google-ing I determined that it's a EC Stearns & Co clamp (you can see the mfg mark is pretty beat up).

It's need s quick derusting and it will go in with the rest - I can't seem to pass up on $2 - $5 C-Clamps . . .

Cheers

Jim

Went to Jake's Flea Market this morning. Place was packed! Wanted to check it out, been thinking about getting a square and setting up a table there. Not a lot of quality tools left by 9am when we arrived. Checked with one of the sellers and middle area squares are filling up with sellers by 3am. So this place is definitely an early bird event.

Looks like the Pro's get there early so their tables are near the front. The local's looking to clear out the garage are later arrivals and they're in the back. I logged 5500 steps and 1.6 miles of walking this morning and I covered all the rows.

For the past couple months, I’ve had a friend staying here. I haven’t asked him to pay rent, since he has invested all his time/money in his business which is on the verge of taking off. His patent just went through, he has an investor and is getting the prototype/product built. Ok enough rambling...

In thanks of me letting him stay here, he gives me 2 tool boxes. Both filled with interesting stuff. I told him I feel guilty about accepting his tools especially because I let him stay here without expecting anything in return except that he focus on his business, but he insists that because I like old tools, they will have a good home. He is buying all new stuff anyway...

So here is a little sampler as I go through them.... I’m going to gather the US made metrics to use in my box I’ll be taking to a friends shop. The rest I will use to upgrade my tools and/or my backup boxes....

I picked this lamp up, thinking it was cool, but I don't know anything about it and Google search isn't coming up with much for me. It seems like it's missing something how the base is shaped though. Anyone have any ideas? For a $1 I thought it was cool enough for a desk lamp at least.
Nice desk lamp, I've got one very similar. Cast iron base flexable neck and metal shade.

I have a third similar style, but it's awaiting its resurrection from decay and abuse.

There is a hole about #10 size (might be tapped) in the front of the base an a couple more in the back maybe a bit larger for the one not for the cord. Pretty sure the were factory, but no clue what for.

I have to say yes to Jake’s, as long as you factor in weather. Even on a bad day, there are a couple nearby under-roof places that can provide consolation when Jake’s is a bust. There’s some farther down rt100, and Fensty’s in Bally itself, which opens a bit later in the day. Bally is a stretch of 35mph, so don’t try to zip through it.
By the way, my 1hr stopover at Quakertown Farmers Market worked out great for me today. I just wish I had more money. The guy I bought this from had a lot of stock he didn’t have last fall: more Bonney, and Proto, Snap-on, etc. not cheap, but good stuff.

any markings on the anvil?

And yes you ****. How much? need the anvil maker :see:

Thanks guys.

I can't find any markings on the anvil. I did the ball bearing test and it rebounded to about 75%. It was $10 and the vise was $75.

The base sure looks like a Peter Wright.

135 lbs...so is that a Reed 106?

Yes

I thought did good getting this wood vise for $3 today.

No maker Mark so i wasn't sure who made it, it's a quick release. Any idea? The number under the pipe is 1V 265.

Suckage got deeper!

After brushing some rust off, it looks like Peter Wright and 0-1-18.

So 46 LB - 2 lbs more than mine.

I'm just Seeing:
"Peter
Wright
Patent"

Does it say "Solid Wrought" in it (If not, Pre-1850)
Does it say "England" on it? (If so post 1910)

Now THAT is buying in an uninformed market!

And NOW:
Thou Suckith THIS MUCH!

Peter Wright Patent is the only thing on it other then the weight. So it's pre 1850? Thanks for the info!!

So, the Portland Swapmeet and PIR swap were over the weekend. I know Provincial has mentioned it, but unless you go you can't understand how bid this is. To use the numbers supplied, the first one has approx. 3500 vendors, while the second covers over 5 miles. And this is mainly auto related. There might be something here or there that doesn't fit, but these are our people. I did the first one on Friday, wandering around with Rileysan and running into Mr.X and Smokeshadow. I used a three wheel bicycle on Saturday to cover the track and infield. So, here's what I found on the first day:

I Proto puller I am doing a deal with Rileysan for, P&C Proto and a Snap-on whitworth socket .50 each, Proto LA ratcheting adaptor $10, Armstrong and Proto 1/4 rats $5 each but both are oddities (odd part number for Armstrong, hole through ratchet head for Proto), Brass spokeshave $5, Proto hammer $5 and Klien telephone relay pliers $1.

Here is a shot of the hole in the Proto head.

A pristine set of Williams DOE's for $20 and a Williams torque wrench for $5.
To be cont.

Here's my big Craigslist find from a couple weeks ago that I forgot to post. I stumbled across an ad for someone who inherited his late father in law's tools. I drove about 45 minutes out of town to get there and here's what I wound up with.

First, the contents of the ad. I was interested in a few items, but he ended up offering me a deal to take a bunch of stuff.

46644018635_cbb0b9688d_c.jpg

Unmarked ball joint press
Napa 41630 Bearing race and seal set
Mityvac brake bleeder
Stant ST12270 Cooling system pressure tester
OTC 525 flange puller set
Lincoln 5805 Impact fitting cleaner
Hi-Tech Model 87 internal-external retaining ring tool
OTC 4 in 1 Seven ton puller set
Snap-on PMF-135 Universal test dial indicator set
Mac Tools PCS12M Mini chisel and punch set
Gray Pneumatic 1398H SAE Impact hex set
Gray Pneumatic 1498MH Metric Impact hex set
Gearwrench serpentine belt tool
Kal Equip 9040B OBD II scan tool

46644018615_5d13349c09_c.jpg

This looks like a brake line flaring set, but I can't find anything about this company. The tools are stamped with "Anchor #1101 Fitzwilliam NH 03447". Anybody know anything about this one?

46644018575_12ef0f6b3c_c.jpg

The ad was originally posted for just the tool sets plus some breaker bars/pry bars that I'll get to in a minute. I was on my way there and he posted that he had some more stuff he hadn't gone through yet and I could pick through it. Just the words I wanted to hear. The Man's father in law was a diesel mechanic, so most of the stuff there were gigantic tools that I didn't have any use for. I did get him to throw in a 3" Wright socket to use as a pen/marker holder for the garage desk. Here's everything else I dug out of there.

two Matco Metric impact hex sets. The set with smaller sizes goes all the way down to 2MM. I've got no idea why you'd need an impact socket that small. There's a couple missing/rounded off so I might just get rid of this set as is.
The rail has some misc Thorsen/SK hex/phillips bits
Snap-on 040 offset screw driver
Snap-on 5/16 chisel
Bonney 1/4" drive 6" extension
2 Cornwell 1/4" drive 6" extensions
MAC 1/2" drive 10" extension
Snap-on FXKL11A 3/8" drive 11" locking extension
Snap-on FXKL6A 3/8" drive 6" locking extension
Snap-on FXKL3A 3/8" drive 3" locking extension
Snap-on FXK3 3/8" drive 3" extension
Snap-on TMXK2 1/4" drive 2" extension
Snap-on TMX1 1/4" drive 1" extension
MAC A1216 3/8" to 1/2" adapter
Matco long hook pick
Cornwell Hose clamp pliers
MAC hose clamp pliers
Snap-on hook pick
Snap-on pocket screwdriver
Snap-on mini pick set
Set of three MAC scrapers
MAC #2 phillips
MAC cotter pin tool
3 Mac mini picks
Craftsman impact screwdriver
Set of Cornwell S2 impact driver bits
K-D tools Hose clamp tool
2 Snap-on striking scrapers
Snap-on SDD4 flat head (has a chipped blade. I LOVE these hard handled screwdrivers, so I'll try and find a replacement shank.
Snap-on 18" demolition chisel
Two Matco snap ring pliers

46644018595_224e42de6a_c.jpg

Snap-on CTS596 NiCad cordless screwdriver with box, charger, one good battery, and one dead battery
MAC Tools NiCad 12V 3/8 Impact + charger and one good battery

46644018395_26568506dd_c.jpg

MAC (Expert E033804) 3/4" drive 40" breaker bar

47559634851_be251f321c_c.jpg

And here's the best find of all... it's the biggest pry bar I've ever used. It's a Snap-on 54" striking pry bar. Placed in the engine bay of a 2011 Mini Cooper for scale.

47559634781_7d7f2b47b8_c.jpg

I don't know if I'll ever have a use for a prybar this big, but I'll be keeping it around just in case I have a need for some serious leverage. Check out the MSRP on this: https://store.snapon.com/Striking-C...vy-Duty-Striking-54-Green-Prybar-P744572.aspx :shocking:

He was asking $250 for the tool sets, two green Snap-on chisel/pry bars and the breaker bar. When I got there I fished out all the hand tools and impacts for an extra $50. Some of the stuff I don't have a use for or have one already so I'll see if I can keep some of the stuff and sell the stuff I don't need to offset the cost.

I spent Saturday at the PIR swap, riding around in the rain on my three-wheel bicycle. I was soaked and freezing by the time the sun came out but had a great time. Here is what I gathered:

From a dollar table I gathered five things; Starrett rule, Thorsen ratchet, Williams socket, Billing T-wrench, and a WF extension.

Sat was the last day so some people were packing up early. I got these for free.

Linesman tools for a buck each. The Kleins are dated 4/29

Blackhawk Baldhead ratchet $5 and another Proto hammer $4 (good thing these tips are available.) The baldy needs work, but at that price, it is worth it to mess around with.
And finally, old test equipment.

Simpson 362 ohmmeter $5 and GE ampmeter $2

Amprobe spliter I found in the bottom of the GE case. I love old test equipment

Went to a estate sale on the way to work. There were almost no tools.
Found 2 wrenches which looked interesting. One is TruFit from probably 50s.
On the way out noticed a rusty box full of water, nails, really rusty augers and other random stuff. Found a chuck on one side and a key on the other. Remembered a random post from GJ and rubbed off the side. Jacobs! Completely stuck though...
Chuck is Jacobs Chuck 33B. A little bit of moving it back and forward and it works perfectly. No obvious rust inside.

Prices - $1 for 2 wrenches and $1 for chuck with the key...

As you may have figured out, the base on that lamp also serves as an ashtray - that was pretty common back in the day, I have several gooseneck lamps with ashtrays. If you're talking about that big square thing sticking up, I suspect it may be a thing to knock your smoking pipe against to clean it out.

Got them down to $1 each on the knurled S-K sockets and .50cents each on the other S-K sockets.

Not a whole lot of tools stuff there but I snagged a few things at the last auction I went to.

These 2 vices came in a lot with some fence post tops for $5 total. No markings on the unpainted one so if anyone recognizes it let me know, other is a colombian 63 1/2. Also snagged a tap & die set for $2.50, no brand name on it or other identifiers that I can tell other than made in japan. Figured for $2.50 I'd add it to the collection. No pictures of it but also picked up a Kennedy 520 box for $40. Not a great deal on the box but it's about 1/2 full of taps, dies and other machinist tools so it wasn't a terrible deal.
