I found a coupe of Snappy pieces at the flea market this morning.

The early ratchet adaptor is still soaking in de-ruster, but here is the 1/4-inch stubby spinner. Octo-Grip TM-40S. 1950's.

Love it. The stubby 1/4" ones don't show up often, in any era. I keep meaning to just order one from Snap on in the hard handle.
Very cool find!

Mmmm. Octo-Grip.
There's a different vendor with boxes and boxes of Snap-on that he unloads on the table every couple years, including an entire set of Octo-Grip screwdrivers. He's not really a collector, just a junk man. And every year we have the same conversation haggling about the price. Says me: "They need some TLC. The handles are more than a little banged up." Says him: "But you can exchange them with your truck guy for brand new drivers." It's hard to reason with someone who doesn't understand that you don't want new drivers. It's as if he's a robot who doesn't recognize me.

The stubby 1/4" ones don't show up often, in any era.
It's funny, I have two stubby midget spinners, one PAR-X and now this one. I've never found a stubby in any other brand. I know they were made by a few other mfgrs, I just never seen them.

Sometimes they just come one at a time. Picked up this 1955 FX-61 flex-extension today. It's one of their "NO GUAR" items.

I picked up some older Snap On mixed in with some other stuff I was bidding on the other day. I have squat for knowledge of Snap On and I'm not, at least for now, asking for help IDing this stuff. Trying to learn for myself until I hit a wall. I'm finding the Snap On genre to be pretty complex. Between the hieroglyphic date codes, the Ferret stuff, pinched tabs vs fixed balls....I'm learning I have a lot to learn. Picking up a ton of info from this thread so...thanks to all who are contributing their knowledge here.

I think I know what this is ! A Snap On ratchet plug tool. Insert thru ratchet, attach socket in front, from the rear push on the spring loaded handle and turn, release and re-position handle and repeat. Yes ??

Let me know ! I bought an old box full of goodies !

Yes those are cool. I like the 20s snap on stuff. I think snapmom has a 5/8 version.

Good for you, Roob!

I found this Blue-Points Chicago tappet wrench at a flea market this morning while waiting for the guy to finish setting up. I put it aside with a DBE and few orphan sockets (not Snap-on) balanced on a sawhorse he was using to separate his area from an adjacent area, and turned my attention to making bigger more significant piles of Plomb and Firestone on the bed of his delivery truck. After we negotiated on the major stuff, I remembered the wrenches and the sockets and my cold coffee! He threw them all in for nothing! My kind of vendor! :)

I went to a local garage sale today about 4:00. We had just arrived home from family Easter festivities when I spotted the Craigslist ad. It was less than 5 minutes from home so I hustled on over. Both of the Snap-on tools were dated 1944 and the ratchet wrench had Navy engraving. I will be adding it to my Navy box. None of my other ratchets of this style have date codes.

That would look good in the NAF box with it’s Navy engraved brother. I’ll see what kind of trade items I can come up with.

I disassembled, cleaned and lubed the 1/2” drive 1944 ratchet I found yesterday and that motivated me to finish putting the 3/8” rat back together. The 3/8” was so rusty when I found it that I ended up drilling out the screws in order to get it apart. It took quite a while to track down some appropriate replacement screws and of course they had to be shortened. I finally completed it today. Here they are with a little brother.

Thanks, Snapmom. It turns out that they are the same size as my 1/4” drive Walden ratchets so I bought several.
I found this socket and cleaned it up. The only markings that I can find are the size and date codes. Is that normal on these early 1/2” drive sockets?

Here are some more photos. My tune up kit purchased in 1962, the remains of my 1962 screwdriver set and the companion brake shoe hold down tool, a 1957 1/2" long arm ratchet purchased in 1962 reconditioned in 1962. And my 1962 1/4" drive case. Don't look too close as many of the contents are not Snap On.

ive got a few of those 1/4" sets, i just joined the forum, i will try to post pics later.

My point wasn't that the vendor is wrong. Technically, I could probably exchange them with most truck guys, and technically, that does mean his beat-up Octo-Grips hold the same value as new Snap-on drivers. Heck, the price he is asking for his vintage 50's Octo-Grips is at least a 50% discount on brand new driver prices, so technically, taking this to its logical conclusion, I could buy an entire set of new Snap-on drivers for half price, at least. But I don't want new Snap-on drivers. I want vintage Octo-Grips. And I am not ever going to pay what he is asking for his in their condition. And judging by the fact that I am certainly not the only collector who has ever looked at them, nobody else is inclined, either. And nobody else is willing to take the risk of a Snap-on truck owner saying no, due to their obvious abuse, either. So, instead of selling them for half what he wants, at my offer price, and letting me try to work some restoration magic on the nicks and scratches and gouges in the black composite handles and shanks, he has been carting them around in the back of his ramshackle pauper's truck for several years, and probably will be for several more years until the truck or he finally breaks down. Granted, some vintage Snap-on is actually worth more than its modern counterpart. most is not. And trying to sell it at new Snap-on prices based solely on the exchange principle is not always a good business model.

Snap on dealers can refuse to warranty an item if they believe you are not the original purchaser (according to my snap on dealer). You could argue that point.

New Britain used to make long sockets like that that were used for the spindles in cotton pickers.

If you walk up to tables that are loaded with Snap on, then the prices are probably going to be high.

This guy has a little of everything. Pulling out his Snap-on, which he has been carting around for years, is like the changing of the seasons for him. And, it should go without saying as evidenced by my posts on this thread, I buy plenty of Snap-on at NJ flea markets. It's not as cheap as everything else, but it's not exorbitant with most vendors, either. Using sockets as an example, standard rule of thumb up here is $1, $2 if it's Snap-on or Craftsman. Those sellers are moving tools. Glenn is moving them from his table back to his truck. Edit: There's a difference between cheap, high, and ridiculous. I don't mind buying high when I have to.

That looks nice and clean. It's from the late 70s to very early 80s. Could probably get $300 if it is as clean as the pics show. I imagine it would be pretty hard to trade for a multi drawer cart, but if you can find someone willing then great. Not many working folks want top chests, especially top chests like that anymore.
