Just finished cleaning up the Reed 106 S. The vise had spent some time in the great outdoors but it cleaned up rather well. The jaw pics are for KMS.e810bb58351facc434bfc5815bc11f74.jpg447b6984424ada04d344b01831998214.jpg99c2d2a2129a56f5d0f5e25d23fa68a5.jpge7aa8187d51c0d35f622d9861646094b.jpge914fd7a628294c81e1cc8ff1baa5e4b.jpg

They’re extremely close now that you mention it, this vise is dated 10/77. These jaws are quite a bit different from the other Reed I have that’s dated 2/67. BTW, I had the Black oil all ready to go for this vise but hit the panic button and grabbed the BLO instead. I’m going to test on a small vise first.161765f1ba67b3bd82f7f3abc674e151.jpg

This beauty will be joining my herd, fortunately joe.striper was local and kind enough to pick it up on my behalf. Can’t wait to get it home!

WOW.-----I had no idea.:eyecrazy:---That's the reason yours looks better than original.
C.P. didn't even spend that much time on it, and he started with molten metal.

I bet the original looked pretty good back 80 years ago. If you count toolgrinding the special cutters that cut the jaw towers and the jaws them self they would have 20 hours in a vise easy. I can only work on vises when I get a machine open from jaw and handle building. So I got to work fast and efficient.

Kevin, incredibly fantastic work as always. I always wondered how much time you put into these. In a perverse way, I'm glad to see it takes even a complete master a pretty significant chunk of time to produce these results. You know, that it doesn't take just a few hours to pump out those sweet sweet Parkers.

But, WITHOUT TAKING AWAY FROM THE REV AT ALL, this is also a shout out to the other guys that have nowhere the skill, experience and/or tool resources to ever produce those results in close to that time frame. But somehow with lesser tools and/or more time are also coming up with some really really nice restorations!! Never gonna paint the Mona Lisa but continuing to try ;)

Back in my triathlon heyday I will never forget meeting a few of the world champs and they all downplayed their fantastic accomplishments in favor of those weekend warrior athletes who weren't born with the God given talent and training resources as themselves. The Rev is similar in the way he freely gives fellers compliments for their restores.

Thanks Jeff, I do appreciate what guys do to make vise parts like you, getridone, Outlaw and va along with others I have seen. Now it is time for some big boy vises.

smitty, the oil is just like the blo, more you put on the darker it gets. The wax is what you need to practice with. In your warmer weather the wax will set up fast, a little goes a long way. I like using one finger and work it in. I think you will like it

It's very refreshing to see someone "who does what they love and loves what they do", instead of always chasing the almighty dollar. I'd say your worth is invaluable.

I've been mulling about my current professional situation and I think it's time to make a change toward a more enjoyable environment.

Much respect KMScott, much respect.

Thanks Fierl... your words hit the nail right on the head. Been building tools for so long and now and watch them get abused by operators and now I can sit back and do something I enjoy. You definitely have talent from what we all have seen and excited for you.

Looks like your weekend went even better than planned! That’s a beautiful SJ
Those jaws look unused. But the paint job is not factory so I assume somebody rehabbed it recently. Do you have plans other than put it on a shelf and admire it?

Recent find...
Here’s one I just bought on Thursday. From the Nevada desert. This one looks like a gently used example of a Columbian 504
Not a real biggie but at least I’m no longer feeling left out. :)

Note the T style jaws just like Smitty’s late model Reed shown a few posts back.

It’s definitely been restored, the jaws are from Kevin and the swivel handles / cleats are new as well. I’m actually planning to either repaint it Hammered Verde Green or the Hammerite Light Blue.

And yes, once I move into a new house later this year with a real shop it will be mounted on my bench and used, respectfully of course.

Smitty: How many vises do you have at this point?

Smitty, KMS raises a good question.---I have to say, it looks pretty darn close to me.---Was wondering if your Reed T-jaws were pined in like the Columbians?

I wish my Reed had replaceable jaws instead of the cast in ones.

Andrew that swivel-jaw is a beauty.---Nice pull.

Yes, they are pinned in. Your pic always makes me jealous that my 508 isn’t a 608.

I think starting yesterday I'm officially a vise collector since I have a vise storage shelf :p

Nice find! That one is in great condition and should clean up very nicely.
That’s an early Morgan (Chicago) before they moved manufacturing to Milwaukee.
Here’s its close relative with the same jaws but no swivel. I painted it Rustoleum dark Hunter green.
The true color is darker than this picture.

I think I’ve hit my time limit in restoring my CB&F No 30. Hand-sanding the handle and slide became tedious and I only had up to 400 grit. It’ll do. Paint is Rustoleum hammered deep green.

Carriage bolt for the swivel is still bent. I tried to unbend it with a block of wood and hammer but kept running into issue of flatting the threads. So I still can’t lock the swivel. :(

Anyone recognize this little guy? Likely some import item, it’s not anything great but not total junk either. I’ve had it long enough to not remember where it came from (could have been last week the way things have gone of late:) )

Looks like from across the pond with the D jaw moving on the slide..

I picked up a Reed 104R yesterday at an estate sale for $15 WITH a big Proto rubber mallet. It was his "outside vise" - there was a RI inside but "Not for sale": then sold to someone else? :dunno: Family sale... The RI was pretty beat so not biggie. This one is rusty, but the jaw faces are great

So three 104's now: this is the only R though EDIT: Only THIS one is a 104(R) the other 2 are 104-1/2's...

That Reed is rusty but I bet it will clean up just fine. Especially with a Proto mallet, I’d say that’s a “you ****” deal.

A big Proto rubber mallet (used, in decent condition) sold a couple of months ago on eBay for $16.99 so you got a Reed 104R free!

Looks like a good project for Evaporust

Picked up this Fuller 3 1/2" swivel vice up today. Its a bit used but seems quite well made & is made in Japan according to the remnants of a sticker on the side

Thought it was quite neat with the swivel, anvil & small pipe holding jaws beneath the straight jaws

I have two of that vise and there is another on Craigslist, today. https://vancouver.craigslist.org/rch/tls/d/delta-small-hobby-vice/6865759214.html
The vise is made in Germany. I would not call it a precision vice but it is OK for many light duty operations. I keep the ones I have for decoration, only.

Here she is, the mighty Reed 108R! I’m absolutely ecstatic!

On a side note, shame on you if anyone from here tried to offer him more money to sell it out from underneath me. Thankfully there are still people in this world that value keeping their word and aren’t driven by greed. (just saying, I’m not sure that it was someone from GJ)

4" jaws, if it were a 97 or 98, a LOT heavier that 60 lbs. I suspect he thinks the "jaw width" is opening...

Hope the bidders are paying attention...

Even if it was a 5198 it wouldn't have 6'' jaws.

I always assume people are referring to the opening when the number listed doesn’t make sense. When he first listed it a couple weeks ago he didn’t even have the model number so it made some people think it was something that it’s not!

If it was 6" jaws, it would be the imaginary 5199...

With swivel jaw...:bowdown::drool::scared:

That Reverend Scott and I were talking about whittling out of a large chunk of steel...

It would probably weigh north on 175 pounds...

I wonder what a new run of cast 519X series copies would sell for???

HMMM???
