Norseman screw machine deal information.
Patrick and I have been contacted numerous times since the last Norseman group buy asking specifically about screw machine length drill sets. You asked for it and here are the final details of this Norseman deal:
No limits on these 3 individual sets that will make up a full 115 piece set. All 3 sets come in separate metal Huot indexes. This is nice since you don’t need 115 drills most of the time. If you really want them all together in 1 large index, Huot makes a screw machine length 115 index. You can get that on your own.
Screw machine length drills are shorter, stiffer and will drill a more accurate hole. If you are not regularly drilling through very thick material, this would be a great set of drills that will last you forever. Look at the length of the flutes on a 3/8” and if you are not drilling through material that thick, then you have a less stiff drill than you need.
Stub-length screw machine twist drills have a shorter overall length than jobbers' length bits for maximum rigidity and longer tool life. Also known as stub drills, they're designed primarily for machining operations in screw machines but can also be used in manual hand held drills. High Speed Steel models are best suited for drilling steel, cast steel, cast iron, or other alloyed or non-alloyed ferrous materials, but they also work well for a variety of non-ferrous and non-metallic materials. For optimal performance and the best tool life, suitable lubricating/cutting oils or the appropriate coolant fluids are recommended. Always look at a chart for proper speeds and feeds when drilling so that you get optimal performance.
The 3 sets are:
