As first posted on the 2019 Garage Sale thread, I picked up this 1940's-era Snap-on K-9 "Junior Handikit" at the flea market today.

It was tractor-trailer trucker's carry box. One of the liquidators had his stuff spread out all over the place - chains, straps, ropes, come-alongs, big *** wrenches, etc, and this lonely little carry box with mainly junk in it. It was like a shaving kit compared to everything else.

John E. Coe patented (1,675,484, 1928) these clever exo-skeletal style boxes (external cantilevers), made them for Good Mfg Co, and then his own company, from c. 1932 through 1957 when a fire burned down the factory in Sherman, NY. Examples abound all over GJ in various 3rd party guises, most notably Snap-on. (Strangely, enough, it was not Snap-on who bought the rights out of the ashes, but Pendleton Tool Technologies, Inc., i.e., Plomb.)

But typically we see the standard size that Duplex made for themselves and other. I have never seen this teeny tiny model (only 14" long!) here or anywhere else, and I believe they only made them for Snap-on.

This is a 1942 catalog page, because it's the most informative with specs, but they were introduced by Snap-on in the 1933 catalog. My box has the pre-1948 Snap-on logo and it's red, not OD green, so I am guesstimating post-war on this. They were "battleship grey duco enamel" up to 1942. Red post-war. The size we normally see branded Duplex is the size that Snap-on branded the K-11, Master Handikit.

At first I was a little disappointed, but now it's growing on me! It's kind of cute! :)

attachment.php

On the other hand, boy is it uglied up with some nasty silver foil tape and some equally nasty black electrical tape. I don't know if it was originally reflective, or just for easy ID, but there is no functional reason for what the PO did. It wraps all the way around on the base of the box plus the two strips on the lids.

attachment.php

I already cut into the one lid to reveal the markings with Simple Green and a hard plastic scraper, and it was a chore and a half, and I am losing more paint in the process. There is no way I am keeping the tape on there, but I have my doubts about removing it without losing more paint. I need some magic goo-off! Or I may just punt and re-paint OD green. (Also a potential trade in the offing, so I may just let it sit for awhile...)

Share pics and notes, Bill. Did you take it apart?

I am actually having doubts about when mine was made. If you look at Pic #4 (with the box opened and the bottle of beer for scale) above, there are bare gray spots under the cantilevers. Almost as if it was spraybombed red when it was closed!

So, yeah, I was just being totally dense yesterday! The classic Snap-on red totally had me fooled. Of course this box was spray bombed red. See Pics 1, 2, & 3. That is not bare steel or primer underneath; it's grey enamel! Same as the finish on the inside. Doh!

And I just discovered that these were never red from the factory. They were listed as "battleship grey duco enamel" in all catalogs between 1933 and 1937, "grey enamel" from 1938 to 1948 (but we know they were OD green during the wartime years).

The 1948 catalog is the last catalog I can find them in.

I coughed up $5.00 for this at an estate sale this morning. Mostly I liked the handle but the box is kind of cool with two trays that sit one on top of the other.
I have no idea who the manufacturer was.

Not sure if it's a deal @ $55, but sounds like they might settle for less. I'd offer $40 myself if I was nearby.

This box is coming up for sale at an auction this weekend... I have never seen a full wood bottom chest like that. Do you think its a home-made project? Looks pretty nicely done either way.

Gerstner offers wood rollers to go with their wood machinist chests. Maybe others

not home/hand made.
NOT a Gerstner.
could be a Gerstner International. that's Gerstners cheaper line made overseas I think.
I owned(I gave one to my mom) 2 small GI boxes but I just don't know enough about them.

there's at least 1 other company that makes a large wooden chest with a bottom kinda like the setup shown, but it wasn't as nice. I know 'cause I owned one.

Follow up photos of a Remline set that I’ve pulled together in the last eight months or so. Started with the top and bottom then recently found another top and middle box, which I will use with the original top and bottom.
I’ve cleaned up the top + bottom and still need to clean up the middle.

Beautiful stack! A Remline stack is on my wish list. Love the intermediate chest.

A buddy of mine picked this up yesterday. I'm not sure who made it - any thoughts?

As reported in the 'garage sale thread', I snagged this Bonney roll cab from the local recycling yard today. Straight as an arrow, with key. It baffles the mind to think about why someone would scrap a box like this. Apparently, if I had been a day or two sooner, I could have had the top box as well... :(

I wonder how common are Simonsens. I have this one for some time - tried to sell it some time ago, but nobody was interested...

I picked up my first "vintage" Craftsman tool box last week. Thanks to RileySan for the heads-up  on this 1950's "Heritage" stack that was for sale at a local used tool store. Was marked as $125 for the top & bottom chest, but I took it home for a very fair $100.

My plan is to use the bottom roller as a stand for my Craftsman "100" drill press of the same vintage. Unfortunately this poor box has been rattle-canned a god-awful bright silver color. I can't help but see the "Tin Man" from Wizard of Oz every time I look at it. I was not originally planning on re-painting it, but I may have to because the color bothers me so much.

Other than the ****-tastic paint job, the boxes appear complete, with intact emblems and undamaged hinges (they just need a proper cleaning).

On the bottom box, the top two drawers have a uniform series of holes that appear punched not drilled, and the hole pattern on both matches. It seems like these holes are original, but I don't have experience with these particular toolboxes, so I dont know. Here are some pics of the holes. One of the drawers has some dividers. I am also not sure if these are "custom" or original. Any thoughts on the holes/dividers?

For those that have repainted these Craftsman heritage toolboxes, what color are you using? Does anybody have a good brand/paint code for a good match to the original color?

First off, great grab for $100! A you **** is in order.

Just my opinion. I would invest in a chemical paint remover (I use aircraft paint remover)and see on a small portion if the original paint is intact.

It's a bit laborious (you have to be quick when the chemical starts to boil up that silver paint to remove it right away) however you may have good original paint that has been protected by that god awful silver.

Nice find.

Man if that thing only had a heart!!

Seriously though, nice snag. It's a great stack. If you look behind the Heritage badges you should find an AMD embossing that may or may not have a two digit date stamp. The earliest date stamp I've seen is 55. I have that same roller, no date stamp and my drawers are laid out differently. Those holes in the drawers of yours sure look factory but if a PO did it themselves, they sure did a meticulous job laying them out. I agree with FJ, do a careful stripping of the tin man silver and you may find a good factory paint underneath.

Pics of my drawer lay out:

Try soaking a small area with Simple Green degreaser first. Many report that SG will remove cheap paint while leaving factory paint intact.

Nice score!

Thanks guys... Not quite sure I quite paid a "You ****" worthy price. I see so many ridiculous deals that people get on this site... Sometimes it seems like you didn't get a good deal unless you got it for free or the "seller" paid you to take it. :lol_hitti

Ill try some gentle methods to strip the tin-man paint and hope for good paint underneath. Some of the silver paint is already coming off of the drawer pulls, and the exposed chrome looks pretty good. So at a minimum I will need to get the paint of the drawer pulls.

As for the date code, it doesn't look like this box has ANY markings behind the badge. No manufacturer info or date code. Not sure if these helps narrow down a date range? Maybe Pre-55 based on he info shared by JoCoSawdust...
