So 5-6 days ago I placed a low bid on a 2” Baby bullet, assumed I’d be outbid so I totally forgot about it until I received an email invoice to pay for the auction I won!

As a side note, does anyone have a swivel base for it that they would be willing to part ways with? I’m hoping to persuade our favorite vise jaw supplier to machine one for me but I’m not optimistic that he will want to since I know he’s a really busy guy but maybe I’ll get lucky!

Who is the GJ member that is starting to experiment with casting things in bronze?
I’m sure you’re gonna strip and repaint that baby so a bronze base could be easily painted to match. Or left natural for a contrasting custom look. Paint the vise metallic gray with a bronze base? Or do a high polish of the 2 dissimilar metals??

A dollar a pound may have been the going rate ten years ago, but unless you stumble across some ignorant seller, or a large corporation selling off its inventory, it's not the going rate today. At least not in the SF bay area.

I think the "vise collector community" has evolved, both in numbers and knowledge. I see vise prices selling more with respect to specific models and makers. I also believe that the Garage Journal has had a lot to do with it, as well as eBay.
For example, an average Wilton No.20 with a swivel base or powr-arm averages around $450. At about 5 lbs, that's $90/lb. Not bad for such a little guy.

Indeed baby bullets are a very nice small vise with great attention to detail and are among some of the more neat vises out there. To be honest I’m more of a fan of the prentiss jewelers vises though. I also attached a couple more pages that show baby bullets.

So I received the “new old stock” York 125 that I paid a premium for because I assumed I was getting the pictured vise, let me know your guys thoughts, I’ll post a link to the original auction that had a much different York 125 pictured.

I do have the swivel lockdowns and the sticker is the same as pictured in the auction.
My only real issue is that I bought it based on the 11 images that were posted in the auction as I thought I was getting that vise. Had I seen pictures of what I actually got, I would not have purchased it.
Edit: Rusty I’m at work but I can post a picture of tonight when I get home. That’s one thing that I don’t doubt is original but I don’t have a ton of experience with York vises.

If it were me and I bought something on ebay and they sent a different one than pictured, I would send it back, whether they claim they allow that or not. If nothing else I would contact the seller and demand they either refund part of the money or you are sending it back. If you file a complaint with ebay stating that it was not as represented, I think you will get ALL of your money back (including your original shipping charges) - at least I have when this type of nonsense happened to me in the past.
*** For casual readers of this site --- This is why it is often better to buy something you can hold in your hand and look at, perhaps paying a little more, than buying it on ebay.

Yes sir, he has offered to pay return shipping and refund my money or refund me $200. I believe that it came out of an unopened crate, and in the video it’s clear that they are all in varying conditions. I purchased based on the images he used, the vise that I got was obviously one of the ones in not so great condition. There’s a glob of paint on top of the rust on the anvil, and you can clearly see paint running down the sides of the vise everywhere. I have to believe that York would not have allowed the vise I bought to leave the factory in that condition 40 years ago.
I don’t doubt that eBay would side with me, just a bummer, I was really hoping to get a really nice condition one that didn’t require me to make it look good.
The seller should have taken pics of EACH vise that belonged in that auction so you KNOW what you are buying. That's what I do and I do not have disappointed buyers. Seller took a short cut and should be held accountable for it.

The grind marks on the back of the static jaw tower on your vise are clearly different from the one pictured. I'm not you, so can't say what you should do - but it seems to me that either a refund with return shipping paid or the $200 back is reasonable. It just comes down to how much you want a really, really good one.

Yeah, he admitted that he got busy with work so he just used the same pictures from the first one he sold. I’m going to see if I can get the jaws to align, if I can then I’ll probably take the $200 refund. If I can’t get them lined up and closing the way they should then I’ll send it back and move on.

So yesterday ended up working out after all. I’m the proud new owner of this Reed 406, bought it from a guy on one of Facebook vise groups, gotta have it shipped to be via Fastenal so I won’t have it for a couple weeks yet.

Nice score Andrew.---406 is a lot of vise.---Nice addition to any collection.---Seems like Facebook Market is getting to be a better medium than Clist.
This 406 is the type 4 series Reed vise I prefer with the ball front. In my copy of the vise data base, I do not see a 406 listed, just the 406 R which seems strange to me? Is the 406 just rarer than the 406 R or has a 406 simply not been verified for weight etc to include in the vise data base?

It’s a 406R, they all have the R after the model number, I just don’t always type it out. It’s about 165 lbs, if someone mentions a Reed model number and you can only find mention of it with the R then they just forgot/didn’t bother typing it out.

I picked this vise up at a local FM last Sunday, primarily because it was in excellent condition, and I don’t have one like it. What I would like to know is who made it. It has a Prentiss look to it but I’m not sure. The only mark is a "3" cast in the side. Jaws are 3 in. wide which is what I suspect the 3 refers to. Any help would be appreciated.

Andrew, this isn't exactly correct. Not all Reed vises are "R" series. The "R" designation in the Reed lineage of vise manufacturing is generally associated with the addition of the adjustable threaded split nut method of retaining the screw and oil holes in the front of the dynamic and again in the slide just behind the vise body when fully closed. Alot of "R" series Reeds also have the flat or "hockey puck" style front but there are examples of transition "R" models that still have the round meatball. "R" series Reeds also seem to have manufacturing date stamps.
The 406 you've purchased is an older model with a standard collar accessible from underneath that retains the screw and handle assembly and no oil holes. You'll quickly see the differences between it and that badass Reed 108R you just got once you can compare them.
Now it may end up being a 406A like the one I picked up for GJ member crotalusatrox a couple years ago. I don't think anyone knows for sure but we were thinking the "A" designation in that one might have been to indicate the addition of the newer style adjustable pin that retains the nut (pictured). Here are some pics of that vise. The last 2 show restoration complete and BLO applied by him.
