New to the forum. I'm actually a commercial interior designer by trade and finally getting some time to work on my own project...the garage. I'm a big VW, Audi & Porsche fan. So figured I would use some German inspiration for our new garage. Inspired by simplicity and showrooms, yet needing to be functional for day to day life, we have started to prepare for the new renovation.


EXISTING GARAGE DETAILS:
- Oversized 2 car with 16' x 7' overhead door
- Int Dimensions 29' x 19' x 10' high + 2' x 9' bump-out
- Renovations required due to a bad mix of concrete when my wife and her first husband had the house built. Too much sand and not the right mix for a garage pad, it has started to fall apart at the termination point of the overhead door. See pics below.

NEW GARAGE DETAILS
- Repair concrete with Sika Rapid Repair Mortar
- New 6 stage concrete floor coating: 1) acid etch, 2) epoxy primer, 3) base coat, 4) full broadcast Torginol 1/8" flake, custom mix, 5) polyaspartic top coat, 6) 2nd top coat with anti-slip oxide
- New paint
- Gladiator Garageworks Gear Tracks on side walls (Thx Lowes Canada for the 15% storewide sale)
- Newage Bold 3.0 red Garage cabinets w/ wood top to the bump-out (Costco.ca, amazing deal of $429CDN for 5 pieces (2 upper, 2 lower + 48" wood top).
- 2 new Lithonia 4000K, 82CRi, 6500 lumen 2x4 LED lights (LBL4W)
- Custom baltic birch front wall w/ french cleat top edge and custom sign panel

FUTURE PLANS
- New jacklift door opener with modified door rails
- New 4 post lift


Week 1:
- May 11: POD
- May 12: Garage Emptied
- May 14-18: Tapers finished taping and adding some new GWB to some side walls

Tell me about it. We are not the only house like this in our area, but we are the worst. Was like that when I met my wife 3 years ago but got a bit worse. So bad, considering she moved in the fall of 2010!

Thanks! Just checked out your YT video of yours...firstly, nice choice on the SQ5, our neighbours got one last year, love it. I personally have a 2011 TTS roadster, APR Stage 2 with new MSS Springs and H&R rear sway going in next week and a few other mods Secondly, great garage, love the detailing products and organization.

I'm actually your northern cousin from YEG hahaha, I see quite a few Calgary guys on here, curious if there are many Edmonton guys?

So UPS delivered the NewAge Bold 3.0 cabinets in red today. What a heck of a deal and value. 5-pieces (2 upper, 2 lower + 48" bamboo top) for $429CDN + free shipping. It arrived in 1 week too

Painting starts tomorrow, flooring next Monday.

Painting stated today. Gasoline also primed and ready for paint. It will blend in with all the walls/ceilings She should be done by Monday, just in time for ESS (Engineered Surface Systems) to come in and start the floor prep.

Your gonna want more light tho than those two 2x4 LED's are gonna put out. I am putting 9 of those type of fixtures in my 20x20.

For now I'm just doing 2 6500 lumen 4000k lithonia. The reason is I didn't want to run new electrical, redo attic insulatio and vapour barrier (note this is an existing garage in NOrthern Alberta, one of the coldest cities over a million people in the world...lol). My shop is more for storing and enjoying the odd mod on the car than a daily workshop. So two 6500lumen will be MUCH better than the two 400-500 lumen screw in bulbs that were in there before, Plus the new ones are 4000k versus 2700-3000k. So should be abotu 15 times brighter

Cleaned the floor a bit more today as the floor repairs start tomorrow. Vacuumed out the crevice where the concrete is deteriorating and WOW, once all the loose aggregate is out, it was even a bit worse. 1 1/2 more weeks until this month long project is done.

A few new additions for the garage:
- New Acer Android Tablet & Logitech Keyboard
- A new Ridgid WD3053 wet/vac AutoPro kit with car adapters for car detailing
- new 45 degree chamfer bit for router to make french cleats.
- Ikea Kungsfors wall system for storage above new Newage workbench/cabinets
- Left & right Ikea F1 schematic posters...gotta love F1!

I hear ya. If you do want more light without electrical work, an option would be linkable LED's. Something like this.

EDIT - Just pulled the PDF for the Lithona LBL4W your wanting. It seems they have knockouts on the end of the fixtures. You could always knock that out, put on a cable connector, and run BX cable on your ceiling to the next fixture. That way you could do 4 or 6 instead of just 2. 6 would work and look great. One in the center where the J box is and then one on either side of it (one towards the door and one towards your back wall)

Well concrete repairs started today

Turns out they decided to diamond grind versus acid etch. I trust them as i have worked with them before. Sika Rapid Repair mortar also applied to damaged areas. Curbs/footings have been troweled smooth. Cracks filled.

Tomorrow they will grind smooth the repairs, epoxy prime, base coat & flake. Wednesday depending on the day they will get either one or both of the polyaspartic top coats on, otherwise, the 2nd top coat will be Thursday.

Today's update, flooring is 100% done, amazing job by ESS Canada on the concrete repairs and new floor coating. I take responsibility for not confirming one detail on the stairs so the side of the stringer wasn't done. But I think I can hide it once I get my new railing in. Just need to figure out the detail.

Lights went in today...so much brighter than before. Not brigther enough for some, but for my needs it is. Tomorrow the Newage cabinets go in, along with base boards and custom wall storage panels with pre-finished russian birch.

For 9 hours with my father-in-law and an addition 2 hours on my own, we got trim 30% of the installed and all the front panels cut, installed, routered etc.

Got the Newage Cabinets from Costco unpacked with BIG DISAPPOINTMENTS due to shipping damage!
1) Thankfully my wife marked boxes damged from UPS when they arrived 2 weeks ago.

2) We ordered two (2) 5-piece sets (2 lower, 2 upper + bamboo top) in red. One set came as half red/half grey despite all boxes being labelled as red. Bad QC on Newage's part.

3) All cabinets came damaged, I mean 100% of them. The uppers are fine since they are inside the lowers, but all the lowers are badly damaged. 2 of the lowers are damaged in concealed areas and I don't want to have to return everything so I will keep those and see if Costco will give me an extra discount. However, one full set of lowers/uppers has to go back because of the half grey mentioned above and that the red of that set is damaged too.. So annoying!!! Not good. I feel the packaging could be better and that UPS probably dropped them.

Now onto today's work:
1) Picked up the five pre-cut sheets of 3/4" good 2-side, pre-finished Russian Birch panels.
2) Picked up the 2x4x10'
3) Added french cleat to the top edge of all of the Birch panels that I had pre-cut to 23 7/8"
4) Marked out all stud locations
5) Installed 2x4 horizontally on front wall
6) Added some 2x4's vertically in middle that will protrude in front of birch panels for the lacquered MDF panel that will have RGB LED halo lighting on all sides and possible Audi & VW Signage
7) Installed the birch panels with #8 x 2 1/4" Robertson screws & finishing/cup washers.
8) Installed painted MDF casing around upper clerestory window.

Thanks! I did a ton of research and met some local concrete guys. Went with ESS Canada (Engineered Surface Systems) I felt they had the best grip on the repairs and coatings. They do flooring for Costco, Joey’s Restaurants and more). They are not one of these 1 day garage guys. Total of 5 days for the floor including repair of concrete.

So the garage was on hold for the past 1 1/2 weeks as I travelled for work. Took back the damaged Newage cabinets to Costco for a full refund and ordered a new set online.

Well came back from my conference last night and the new Newage cabinets from Costco came!!! Yay, or not?

Well got them unboxed tonight. Yes they were the correct colour, BUT, BIG BUT, there were 3 issues:
1) One upper door had paint damage as it was touched during the manufacutring process before it dried.
2) Another damaged/bent frame on the front
3) The wood top isn't even close to the colour of the wood top. YES, I know wood is natural; however, Newage needs to ensure from batch to batch some sort of consistency, this isn't even close (see pics below).

Newage really needs some better QC and also stop shipping with UPS.

So I have installed all but the top & damaged door front. Calling Costco in the morning. I will accept the damged frame, BUT I will not accept the door or the top, nor can I go through the effort of taking everything down, returning it and trying to order a 3rd time. THey will have to get Newage to figure it out and make me happy!

I think you're making a mistake with the dark colors that don't reflect light very well.

If the entire garage was that and I was doing intricate work I would agree and would not use that colour. This is more of a storage garage with the odd work being done and the dark colour is only on one wall and only behind small areas of light wood panels.

Been a busy month, little time to work on garage. Finally got the middle piece of plywood for my french cleats done. Then took time to figure out how I wanted to hang/store 3 bikes. Decided on the Feedback Sports Velo Hinged Bike Hook (link below). Made french cleats that hang down from my decorative wall panels. This allows me to slide bikes left/right as needed. I used 1 single screw at a concealed point to hold cleats from shifting and lifting once bike is on. Quite happy!

Things are sorted with Costco & NewAge. I got $75 back to keep 1 bent cabinet frame and then NewAge shipped over a new counter top to match the colour of the other one and a new upper cabinet with new doors. I swapped everything out and just need UPS to pick up the parts to be returned back to NewAge.

Well it's nearly been a year since I started. Got back onto finishing the garage lately. The lacquered MDF panel and Audi Sport signage is now up.

Left to do:
- Track light above sign panel
- Philip Hue LED light around lacquered sign panel
- Metal corner guards on all exterior drywall corners
- Metal/glass handrail at stairs
- Add 1 more 2x2 light above stairs

Well it's nearly been a year since I started. Got back onto finishing the garage lately. The lacquered MDF panel and Audi Sport signage is now up.

Left to do:
- Track light above sign panel
- Philip Hue LED light around lacquered sign panel
...

That dealership style wall looks superb , will be a great welcome home all lit up at night.
The French cleat hanging storage system is clever, though it's almost a shame to cover up such a good looking wall(!) But, it is a garage not a showroom afterall.

I can't believe it's been over a year since I last posted. I am doing little things now as I try and finish the garage for some more professional photos.

Today I installed a new 400cfm air cleaner. Basically in Canada, they are all the same: Wen, PowerFist by Princess Auto, King and others are all 100% identical, same factory, just different camera and colour. Got the PowerFist on sale for $180CDN.
