At first I thought valve spring but after reading your whole post probably strut coil spring?

You can get a Branick for under $1000.

Yeah, that one is nice!

I posted the HF “****” because it has treated me VERY well and made me a lot of money for the cost. Not once have I felt it “unsafe” when used correctly.

And strut springs scare the HELL out of me. It’s something I hate doing....

They have always scared me. I've seen some of the damage they can do when they get loose.

i have the Mountain/ Matco one, does struts and coil springs. I don't remember why I bought it over the clamshell style, but it has worked well for what I've used it for, though lately, for the price I've just been getting complete new struts when im called on to replace them.

I think there was a bigger price difference when I bought it a few yrs ago, same part numbers though.

I haven't had an issue with the style that I have with the lowering coils I have used before, but I do remember having an issue with lift coils/ struts for a jeep and I couldn't use the safety latch mechanism that captures the coil incase it decides to go for a walk since the coil wire was pretty thick and the latching pin wouldn't fit over it. the coil still fit in the hooks, just no latch over it.

I have this one. Other then being a little time consuming to install/remove its damn stout. I’ve done a few hundred struts with it and it’s still in great shape. However one of these days when there’s some floor space for a real one, this will get replaced.

I have one that has a bottle jack and foot pedal. Comes with a large and small C shape attachment. It was under $200 from amazon.
I use it outside and with a full face shield.

It may not fit everything so that’s where the low tech ones come in. I have not heard of anyone getting killed from that.

Blue point, they make 2, one is a set of external ones like you described but they have locking pins so they can't slip off, and the other is an internal one for doing large coil springs on old muscle cars or 2wd trucks with coil spring front ends, they're USA made and worth like $90 a piece!

That's the style I have and would recommend for a "cheap" spring compressor. $29.99 for it on Amazon.

I took one look at the "coil over" on the rear shock for an Expedition and sent it to a shop. Those coils where fatter than my thumb and I have FAT hands !

I haven't used it yet but I bought the Eastwood set because it came with 3 clamps instead of 2. It will be used on my Dode Ram. I think it is the same as the OEM brand set. It does not have the safety U bolts, which would have been a little more protection.
