just finished giving my Columbian 204 1/2 M a bit of a refresh. Had enough oil and black finishes so went a little different with the color.
Well done, it seems like a good balance between new and vintage. I like the black steel look on the handle, slide and jaws.

These are not hard to make at all, I wonder why they get shipped any other way. I basically do the same thing on a smaller scale and ultimately put in a cardboard box when I use UPS, USPS, FedEx etc. for smaller vises. Never had even a mention of damage.1e950c9af93e08019d424206cd284c1d.jpga4e5a2b1b20cb2a3e00acb6da3a3b887.jpg40a3b94f8bf10df2ebcd1abc84370dbc.jpg

Dogfight- Now that is just plane fun!!! Needs a desk to rest on, preferably one that a person with the mind of a child occupies. I uncontrollably make artillery noises when I look at it. Thanks for sharing. Josh

This has got to be my favorite Craigslist vise ad I have ever seen. Got to give them an A for truth in advertising. Not for the drop forged part, but the line after that!

Reed vise - $500 (Chico)

Steel not cast
This vice is dropped forged grade a steel made in usa
This is not a ***** vise made some where where they don't give a **** it can take it
Had this vise for 27 years hate to see it go

I think we can all agree that although they are certainly excellent vises, Reeds are cast and NOT drop forged steel!

BTW, ads with that same language pop up on C/L from time to time. Spam?

Yeah, saw that Chico ad months ago and, after verifying pics he texted me, told the guy it was cast iron. He wasn't having any of it, he 100% knows what he has.

I need to thin the herd a little. I have a 1750 Tradesman which I degunked and degreased in my parts washer, scraped off all the goop but have not refurbed as such. I also have a 1760 which I have refurbed, so I have the appropriate color rattle can paint.

Turns out I have three vises - Parker F, simplex 41, reed 103-1/2 all ready for a coat of epoxy primer and a repaint so......my question is: Is it worth doing a refurb on this 1750 just to sell, or am I just as well off to sell it as is in "original" condition? The condition is very good btw - even the end cap is present.

I get about 2X the price on Tradesmans after a full restore. But of course you gotta value your time reworking, so it might be a wash, i.e. sell it for X without doing anything, sell it for 2X with some work into it.

I saw that ad too last night. People laughed at me when I asked $500 for my 1946, 2" baby bullet, swivel base, with original paint and sticker. "Times they are a changing..."

I also saw that ad months ago, and I sent him a note requesting pictures of his baddass $500 vise. He sent me a picture of a tired looking Reed 105R.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that vise is not worth that much even in good condition.

As long as we're on the topic of mis-identifying material of construction, has anyone else seen the aluminum Parker 973-A on eBay?

Picked up this very old Rock Island 241 today, it only has 3.5” jaws but weighs 80 lbs! It has some slight damage behind the jaw but I’m actually planning on milling the jaws off and converting it to replaceable Starrett type jaws so it’s not a big deal. Otherwise it’s in great condition for its age!

It is kind of funny though that people are raving about what a great deal a fairly common 5 pound vise (Wilton baby bullet) is at $400 (also without a swivel base). Yet scoffing at a 75 pound 105 Reed that is bound to be a rarer vise. If you had a "job" to do though most people would rather have that Reed vise than the $400 baby bullet. I realize prices tend to be driven by collectors as opposed to people using vises, but it still strikes me as funny.

I know where there is a Reed 105 in a shop about 100 miles from here that is used every day. I tried to buy it years ago and offered more than I will post on here. The owner of the shop actually got mad and told me he couldn't buy a decent new vise for twice what I offered. I could not argue with that.

Surprisingly haven't had a single offer here for this little guy I finished. Well minus the handle really. Its seen better days but I did straighten it out. Only message I have received was one asking if the rear part of the body could be used as an anvil [emoji23]409689f09f07074500e9ccc1fb822f22.jpg

I found this old Chas Parker vise no. 956 today, it has 6” jaws and weighs in at 131 lbs. The vise has been well used but somebody took care of it over the years.d4a00763ee89d2968378c0dca92780e1.jpg8a29ac4abf9f5f14327871f6cf5af0cc.jpg520eef781eb54c76af52c60aa93dd861.jpg

It is a very nice little Columbian, but I guess it depends what you're asking? Seems to me that 3 or 3-1/2" vises don't fetch big money. I only have two, a Reed 103-1/2 and a Hollands 23-1/2H, but I only paid $60 and $75 for them. And I'm sure around here, that would be considered top dollar.

Those little Columbians can be quite collectible especially with the swivel base. I didn’t see the vise on eBay I wonder what board he has it on.

I wonder where Gman007 has been keeping himself. I haven’t seen him post in quite a while, I hope he’s ok.

That’s a great looking 956. Nice score
It brings back memories. A Parker 956 was my first 6 incher. I sold it to loydski and I don’t know what happened to it after that.

Thanks Shift, I’m starting to gravitate to Parker’s since Prentiss vises have become relatively scarce in my area.

I gave it a much needed spray of WD-40 but that’s about it. It does have a well aged patina now that you mention it.

Picked this up on CL a while back. Pretty rusty, but nothing a grinder with a wire cup wouldn't take care of.

I think the hardware needs correction, but it's OK for now.

I actually do not have it on eBay. Only listed locally on OfferUp and through Facebook. I have honestly never used eBay other than looking at things.
