Reading the rules, technically I don't really see where he broke any rule (as I read it, the way it is written, you just are not allowed to post items for sale in other sections if you have less than 5 posts). I understand though that the spirit of the rule was for people to put items for sale in the classified section.

7. You must have a minimum post count of 5 to post threads in the classifieds. Alliance members can post no matter their post count. **Do not place a classified ad elsewhere in the forum due to not having the required post count.**

Note: The Garage Journal is not a classifieds site. We have a classifieds section just so that users can help each other out with deals and finds.

I think the meaning is pretty clear. The mods are fairly laid back on it generally when people start a deal in a thread, but simply posting "For sale" or cross posting something you have for sale has never been seen as acceptable here.

Just got a Wilton 745 from Amazon warehouse. Despite their shipping dept's best efforts it did arrive in one piece. Now I need to start working on a stand for it, junkyard steel rim here I come!

Thanks to both Outlaw and Shiftless for your posts. Bringing the forum rules up once in a while is appreciated and acceptance of all whether they have bought a new vise or spent decades hunting vintage ones is a good thing. Finished supper and back to the shop to furrow my brow at the 105 Reed and probably be putting it back together, mostly cleaned. Random picture of a vise display that I finally did for some of the pieces that I’ve been fortunate enough to have for a little while. Thinking of trying to stay focused on the Reeds so the collection doesn’t just continue to snowball, but it’s probably too late cuz what if I see a total deal? Or that huge .... that needs a home? Oh and that rare....

My Throwback Thursday contribution. I got my feet wet a bit with my first restoration which was actually a Columbian D45 but this 4.5" swivel jaw Rock Island 853 was really the first. Since that Columbian was ultimately sold to a coworker the Rock Island is also the longest standing member of my vise collection and it most likely will always hold that spot!

Good evening all. Have a Reed disassembly question for anyone who has run across a Reed with the feature that is totally new to me. This will make my fifth Reed that I have torn down and cleaned up and this is a first. I’m struggling to get the nut removed. This 105 has a sectional dovetail (probably incorrect term) with I believe a section between the front and back where there is no dovetail. It also has a depression or stopped half circle in the base which possibly is to “drop “ one of the dovetail sections in for installing the nut but I haven’t been successful at getting it out. Anyone have experience with this issue? Or do I have a prototype that they realized was a bad idea and canned? It only says “pat. Pend” on it and has a date stamp of 231. I will be impatiently waiting for a solution Thanks in advance
I also threw in a picture of a very intimidating drill press that’s at an estate sale not too far away from me this Friday because it was next to the Reeds pictures and just felt other folks might enjoy seeing it.

No experience. But could that key be rusted to the nut or upside down then banged into place?

AKARICK- Appreciate you trying to help. I am thinking that you mean is the dovetail a separate piece from the nut and it’s not, it was machined into the spindle nut so it’s all one pice which is how all the Reeds have been that I’ve worked on. This 105 is different that all the others though because the dovetail on the nut has a section where there is no dovetail in the middle whereas all other Reeds have had a continuous dovetail on the bottom of the spindle nut. Look at the pictures and you can see there’s also a semi circle stopped cut out in the dovetail area of the static jaw. The nut acts like it wants to come out at this point (it’s halfway out in the picture) but only wiggles and won’t come back for me. Befuddling

And that's the part I am talking about. The stepped piece that that looks like it should be able to be removed from the semi circle. I was thinking it wide at the bottom. Good Luck.

Not sure if these would qualify as a throwback since this happened within the last two years. Bought both of these Wilton 2" vises, each one with the original paint, on the SAME weekend. Bought them too cheap, sold them too cheap. Had fun finding them, had fun selling them. Enjoyed every minute of it and especially the people I met in the process. Would do it all over again at the same prices (it is not all about money for me).

PIcked up this Athol 4-1/2' vise a couple weeks ago. Came out of Lockheed, I guess they prefer not to have the bench "stop" as it has been milled off - or was ordered from Athol modified this way. Also, the jaws are smooth, the seller said all vises at Lockheed had smooth jaws. He had a mouthwatering fleet of Wilton bullets, maybe a dozen of them all the way up to the 600. All obtained for low money at Lockheed sell-offs.

This is my first Athol, I like them, buttress thread and a spring preload on the screw. By the way, how do you remove the screw there are no obvious pins or collars.

Kenc, I recently sold a swivel base 4 1/2 inch Athol that also had smooth jaws. I think all the others I’ve had have had the cross hatched jaws.

I have never tried to remove the spring but I was thinking that mine had a pin holding the spring and washer in place.

I finished up the mini Parker for now and I wanted to share some pics and specifications. I really love this piece. I think I finally captured just how small this vise is, especially the frontal shot next to the baby bullet.

1.25" jaws, 1lb 9oz total weight.

Some interesting notes the spindle nose is tapped for an inset keeper screw just like the big ones. The inset screw is a #6 32 tpi 3/16ths long.

The swivel lock thread is also #6 32tpi. The Acorn nut I am using is 5/16ths. I need to make one from scratch so it is factory but that's a job for a different day.

I am not happy with the spindle handle. It is too long and the balls started as acorn nuts that I thought were stainless steel. I will have to redo them when I get a chance.

It is and always will be one of my favorites. I've only ever seen one other and it was on an offerup ad.

I also use this vise all the time too! With around 25 vises on the bench now I certainly can't say I use them all but the Rock Island double swiveler occupies a prime spot in one of my two 2" receivers on the corners of my bench.

Yes, it is going in the cabinet, in fact, it's already there. I sold my #87 Athol and the 622 14 took its place. I will take some pics for you.

That’s a great clamp on , I’ve never seen one in the wild. It seems pretty rare.

Same here, I rarely see a nice clamp-on vise, and then 90% of the time when I do, they are Stanleys. Nothing wrong with that, I have 2 nice examples. More variety would be nice however.

But looking at those Athols it seems a lot of them have braze repairs. If I found a broken one, I'd probably try chopping the clamp, and making a mini swivel base for it like kmscott did.

Kenc, piggybacking on what Mike said: Both of my Athol's have a pin and washer on the screw. Took mine off when I cleaned them up and it's not fun reinstalling them. Not much room to work and ended up making a homemade "tool" to help the process. In hindsight I would have left the in place and cleaned around them.

Stanley Clamp-On

By the way can anybody lend a helping hand in identifying the missing piece on the Stanley clamp-on. It’s missing something to hold the main nut while going open on the vise. So technically it doesn’t open unless you pull on it since there is nothing pushing or holding the main nut.

Any suggestions?
