light bulb suggestions

Last fall my wife and I purchased a new home. It came with a mostly insulated 27x40 pole built garage that is in need of some tlc. The problem I have right now is with the lighting. It is currently wired up with 10 screw-in bulb light sockets. I will switch to LED shop lights when I get time to work on the shop, but that is still some time away. I haven't spent a total of 15 minutes in there since we moved in.

So right now, only two bulbs even work. They were in there when we moved in. I want to go pick up some light bulbs just to do the job for now. I won't be spending much time in there, but I do need to get out there at night to start cleaning, demo-ing, and hauling stuff off to the dump. Any suggestions on what type of light bulbs to use for now? Should I use indoor flood light bulbs?

60w LEDs would be cheapest, plus you can reuse them in the house once you have converted the lighting to shop lights. Thats a big space though so you will only get enough light to be able to walk through the place without killing yourself.

In saying that, 100w would likely be the minimum I'd go. They are still expensive around here, but worth a look. Still seems like a big space to light with only 10 light fixtures.

If you’re trying to put in more than ten 100 watt equivalent led bulbs, you can have 20 in there if you buy 10 of these. They cost about $3 each at HD. (Check Amazon)

Too bad you’re not closer... I have a bin full of used incandescent bulbs I never got around to throwing out when I converted.

If you run the numbers on the lumens, 2-hundred watt equivalent LED bulbs put out almost the same amount of light as one twin tube LED shop light.

Since anything you buy is likely temporary buying anything is kind of a wasteful.

If you buy something like this it will give you a lot of light 4400 lumens in each socket it may be a long time before you get around to upgrading

How high up are these fixtures?

They are up about 10ft high.

The reason I don't spend much time out there is lack of time. It will continue to be that way for most of this year. My hope is to get out there for about an hour a couple of days a week at night after everyone goes to bed and get a little done at a time. I need to be able to see what I'm doing though.

I wired up 6 lights for my 30x40 shop, and installed 200w incandescent on temporary basis. Worked well. They were relatively cheap, I think $4 each.

Keep eye out for linear high bay LED shop lights. I found 14,000 lumen 110w LED’s for $54 each. Discontinued / last year’s model. Unfortunately they are all sold out now.

I think I saved $170...got six for $350.

150w equivelant LEDs will provide plenty of light. Higher wattage equivelants are also available.

Medium screw base bulbs that put out enough lumens to be usefull are very expensive. Example (link). Even then, at only 10 bulbs it's not really enough. Corncob lights are not good for this application. Consider mounting 4ft 5000 Lumen+ 2-Lamp strip lights instead.
