Hello all. Im in search of an oxyacetylene setup to use for very light duty metal crafting. I am a woodworker and have been looking at getting a MIG setup or an oxyace set up to weld some thin sheet and bar stock and to heat and bend thick scrap metal for making hooks for the garage and some craft things. I see many setups on craigslist but dont know really how to look for used equipment. I looked on line and see Victor is a big brand but found a brand called Weldmark by Victor. The weldmark torch setup is a lot cheaper than the victor setup. Have another question about tanks. How do you tell if a used tank is worth the money and how much does a new set of tanks cost? Any suggestions would be great as I have never used a welder or torch setup before. Thanks,
Jack

I have a victor jr. Tanks are an exchange at my welding supply. Tanks have dates of expiration in them. They have to be reinspected after expire. I’d buy new with this setup. Most dangerous thing I have in my shop.
If I was doing it again now I’d get an oxy propane setup.
I only use it to heat up bolts and cut. When you need it and have it all the money is worth it.
I use a 135mig for light welding

tanks are either leased or customer owned . be careful if buying used from JQ Public to be sure that they aren't selling you leased tanks, or tanks that aren't the same as your seller will supply as they are exchange & if you get a non compatible tank, they won't exchange them
Cutting with Oxy Acet is oxygen pricey, especially with the small owned tanks . for light occasional use, a knock off hobby set would probably be OK. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Weldin...683074&hash=item4d6201b66e:g:3cMAAOSwI1VcF1mE

you can also use a "B" acetylene tank that is customer owned & readily available at supply houses etc for exchange .
I have a small set up that uses a B tank, I changed the ****** on the acetylene reg to avoid using an adapter to fit the tank

For your use go with oxygen/propane. Acetylene getting expensive as stink. I have ancient Victor torches. Not familiar with any other brands although you may want flash arresters

A TURBO TORCH will do what you want with the big tip. Check craigslist for a
'' B'' tank and torch setup. I usually see them for a $100 tank and torch.
Local welding supplier will exchange tank.
I would skip any small oxygen/acetylene setup. Tanks go really fast. Check with local welding supplier on tank policies. Many only exchange their tanks. A full size torch set isn't real expensive. Here's my local guy. SMITH is made in USA too.

check your area for a LWS (local welding supplier), they will tell you if they fill customer tanks, exchange customer tanks, or only lease. cost varies widely by location, around me (I bought a used setup) I can fill both tanks for a couple bills.

another option if you have one near you is Tractor Supply (TSC). they do tank exchanges for most popular sizes of gas. a little more expensive that way but maybe more convenient if you aren't comfortable going to a pro LWS (usually need an account, they may be in very industrial locations).

the hobby size tank setups like HF sells are too small and you'll spend a ton constantly filling them.

as others said, consider an oxy propane setup. if I were to do it over again i'd probably go that route. it's a lot easier refilling/using propane you may already have. then you're just re-filling the oxygen.

I just went through the acquisition of a MIG setup. I'd never touched a welding machine before Mid-March. Didn't really know much about welding or fabrication in general, either.

I watched (and still do) a LOT of Youtube (Weld.com, Welding tips and tricks, weld tube, etc.) and picked up pieces of info .... piece by piece. It's a lot to learn.

I decided pretty early that I'd probably buy a new Eastwood MIG box, mostly based on the suggestion of a friend who used a MIG 135 to build a Factory 5 Cobra from scratch.

I looked around on FB Marketplace and CL for a C25 ( 75% CO2, 25% Argon), found what turned about to an old man that piddles in buying and selling used Millermatic welding machines and welding gas bottles. He used to have a fairly decent trailer fab business and still messes around with all the fabrication stuff with a couple of buddies, mostly selling used welders and tanks. I bought a 125 CF C25 tank from him for $225. I asked him where I should take it to get it refilled.... He said to bring it back, he'd swap it out for a full tank for $65. His place is as convenient to me as AirGas, etc., and he's available on the weekends... and he's one of them old guys that isn't too socialable until he's been around you a few minutes, then you can't get away from him and his stories. Good times.

Now I'm wanting a cutting torch setup and I see a decent one is about as much as I paid for my welder.

I have a neighbor that builds race cars for a living around the corner and said he would sell me an Oxy/Ace setup. I've just never asked how much because I don't have the funds for it right now.

Anyway....my suggestion is to look around and find someone local that deals in gas bottles to handle it like what I'm doing.

BTW, the 125 CF tank is about 50% used up and I've been through about 4-5 lbs of 0.030" wire on my machine. I've had the pressure set a little high most of the time (20-24 CFH) because I've been welding outside....I try not to weld in the wind, tho.

The 125 is a super home setup. Not so big its unmanageable and handles well on carts but big enough to get some real work done. I wouldn't want mkuch smaller than 80 on any of it.

Be very careful buying cylinders from HORROR FREIGHT...
I was told they cannot be legally filled.... :shocking: :shocking:

LW

I bought a small co2 tank from them years ago to use for a keg setup, never had trouble getting it filled. maybe that's changed.

I have a torch setup, but I need to replace it (Marquet). I checked with a torch outfitter and they recommended a Harris that was about $275. I'm a hobbyist, so I don't need a high end set...

I own my tanks, so that's not a big deal. I think tanks rentals are around $15/tank/year, so not that big a deal. I didn't find gas all that costly...

Propane versus acetylene, really only need acetylene for brazing? I do some brazing, so have acetylene...I used propane at a former employer for cutting scrap tubing short enough to fit dumpsters. I saw little difference in cutting...

Harris is no comparison to SMITH or VICTOR torches. We've been using those two for 50 years in the Pipefitting industry that I know of.

You can buy a real torch for less. Smith made in USA .

Or a Victor for $300.00. Victor set has a rosebud too.
