Oily Nails, nice little grouping you have. Collecting and/or using the smaller vises can be just as enjoyable as wrestling around with those bigger versions. :)

Smitty- sorry so late to the party but WOW, that’s a fantastic Prentiss swivel jaw collection. Thanks for posting (I also saved your pictures 😁) I will be letting you know if I happen to stumble upon a #22.

Anyone- I don’t know a thing about the York vises but just saw a FB posting several hours away and it reads “8”York vise-$280. Did York make an 8”? I have messaged but it’s late so won’t hear until the morning if at all and it’s probably gone, post is four days old. Anyway thought I’d see what the thoughts were. Andrew, do you have a York in your 8” collection? Josh

Josh, the seller probably means it opens to 8''.---As far as I know, the 150mm is the biggest York made which would figure out to be about 5.90 inches.---I'm always having to eat my words so I'm not going to say for 100% that there isn't a York with 8'' jaws out there, but as far as I know there isn't.

I think a lot of times sellers throw that 8'' stat out there to catch some eyes which it does.---Some sellers probably don't know just how to post, but then again some know exactly what they're doing.:headshake

Can anyone identify this vice?
Guy had it listed for $100, but now down to $85 after a few weeks.

Thanks for the input VA, as I said had no idea and did search here but 150mm was the biggest I ran across. Yeah that old capacity =size issue comes up occasionally

Hey Caos- i’m no authority on any type of vise But I do know that those style of Vises with the screws on the sides of them have a tendency to crack and or break right there. Sorry I don’t have a better description for you but if that something you’re interested in take a close look at this side of that vise before you Close the deal. Josh

There is something wrong with that. Either it is off both dove tails and shifted over to the right, or..... I would be VERY careful buying that vise. They are neat, but not all that robust. They are a delicate machinist vise.

good morning,
going to look at a Yost 108, about 180 lbs and apparently no issues with the vise. Don't know much about Yosts but from the single pic the seller sent me it's certainly not a vintage Yost. The word "YOST" is cast into the dynamic jaw and "YOST MFG CO" "USA" is cast into the static. The vintage Yost vises I've seen have the city of manufacture cast on the static and the current Yosts don't have "Yost" cast on the dynamic Can anyone ball park a manufacturing window based on the casting info and weight?
thanks for any help

wrench; that's a beast! Yours has meadville, pa in the casting so it's older than the one i'm looking at. Your vise also violate my retirement rule of "no part of a vise I carry down to the workshop can weigh more than 100lbs". lol

Being of that same retirement age group I subscribe to the same credo.

I’m marching ever closer to my goal of acquiring an 8” vise from each manufacturer that made one!

Over the weekend I bought this Athol 618, if you’re sitting there thinking that maybe you’ve seen this vise before, you’d be correct! I bought it from Mike K. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to scratch Athol off the list as they are definitely one of the more elusive 8” vises.

Needless to say, I’m super happy that I was able to buy it!

Did somebody badger you for talking about vises that are for sale on eBay? I saw that monarch and it’s a beauty, the seller needs to come down a bit in IMHO. Somebody just listed a really nice Parker with the wrench that was painted red back in the day.

I don’t know what it is about painted vises but I’ve got two red vises in a row. There are a couple of beautiful baby Wilton’s that are painted red and up for sale on EBay right now. I might throw my hat into the arena if they stay reasonable.

Just scored this little Stanley Sweetheart no. 761 on eBay for thirty five bucks. It has 1 1/2” jaws and weighs in at three pounds. ea5ee90c3346b077cbbeadefe1e84720.jpg

Yeah, I don't particularly get it myself, but there are some folks that get super bunched ******* if an active public auction item is listed, unless Buy It Now.

Pretty decent shape Rock Island Ivan, should clean up well.

Smitty- That Stanley 761 is very clean looking already, and good price too. That must be the older brother to the Stanley 771 that I bought last week from Ebray as well; with shipping it was around $40 but not as cleaned up as yours looks. It had the original paint on it I believe but it was awful brown that was not staying unfortunately. Just too ugly. I love the 1 1/2” jaws. Josh

VA’s keen insight has influenced me on a few purchases there. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Thanks josh. Yeah I can’t wait to get it. Post a pic of the 771 when you get a chance.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering what kind it was. I would prefer a more heavy duty one anyway. I would love to find some of the ones everyone on here seems to find, but those deals are to far away from me.

A friend of mine was getting rid of some his older and duplicate tools a few years ago. I recently came across this website and discovered a new hobby. One of the tools that he gave me was Prentiss 51-91 Bulldog machinist vise. I spent quite a bit of time getting the rust off, prepping for painting and finishing. I will be installing this on my bench this coming weekend.
Here are pictures of Before, During and after the restoration.

The Bulldog was in really nice shape before I started, all the parts were there and in working order.

Andrew: another great pickup, congrats! Are you planning a museum or unveiling to show off all these 8"s you've collected? Would be a heck of a display.

Smitty, I love those Sweethearts.---I've got a couple but they are not as nice as that one.---They are really made solid.---They are my favorite behind the Pyramid, Pirimitt, and the Wilton Clamp-on.

Shiftless ended up loading the 8" Yost into the truck. It's taking the place of my Athol 626 which is gonna get a an overdue 'refresh'. Damn Athol base comes close to violating the 100# rule all by itself. :wtf:

I know I should be asking this on the vise repair thread, but that thread doesn't get too much traffic, and I know there are some big Prentiss fans here, sooooooooooo..........

My project Prentiss 56 has yet another strange issue, the handle hole in the meatball is way too big (IMO) for the handle. It rattles around in there. I assume something is not right here and I was planning on sleeving the "hole" down to something more reasonable. Can you Prentiss experts tell me - have you ever seen this as original issue on a Prentiss or is this just buggered and needs fixin'?

I've seen that on other prentisses. From all the years of someone letting the handle drop into the meatball, cammed out the hole. A sleeve may not be a bad fix, or is you're replacing the handle, bigger ends would help.
