I have observed that most of your days are spent in "play" but your day in the hole looks dangerously close to actual "work". Is this the start of a new trend?

Andy: that hole looks like a sort of camp my neighbor and I attempted to dig out when we were about 10 years old. Dang i'm not sure i could climb in a hole like that with no supports on the sides now.

nice work and i'm sure your son got a laugh when you said the comment about being 6 feet under.

looks like you are still busy as ever.

just wanted to also stop by and tell you to tell your wife HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY from me (us).

cheers

It's all in the definition. Grass in the garden is a weed. All of my activities are classified as work by someone. I don't "relax", hunt, or fish. Years ago my wife asked whether I wanted to take up fishing. I asked whether I should take up chasing women and drinking too...

She dropped it.

I dug a well when I was about ten. Four feet down I started mining horizontally and my dad made me fill it in. In the back yard.

I am a certified shoring engineer and this was a safe excavation. In my professional opinion. I do know the rules.

Thanks for the well wishes, she had a very happy Mother's Day, lunch with the extended family.

Saturday we had a friend and his friends out for a hay ride and cookout. They brought everything, all I supplied was the fire and hay ride. I failed to get pictures, other than when we were putting the hay away his 1 year old climbed the stack. He barely caught up with her.

attachment.php

This was not staged, she had climbed 6 bales high and was close to the back edge. I ran around the stack as he climbed after her. I didn't need to catch her and took the picture. She is having a great childhood.

Andy, there is something about stacks of hay bales that fascinates us. As a 6-year-old I discovered an opening at the bottom of a stack and tunneled my way into the center. Along the way I discovered more voids and turned the whole thing into my fort. Fortunately I didn't set up a kitchen or bathroom. If I had, I'd probably still be in there.

Agreed, as a kid when visiting my grandparents farm I used to climb the haystack and jump off the top on to the trailer which was laden with corn stalks as the tractor drove past the haystack towing it. I found it hilarious when my cousin copied me but missed the trailer, fortunately he wasn't hurt. My grandmother was not amused at all.

Andy: hay bales sure brings back great memories. my uncle's 200 acre farm had them stacked maybe 30 high in his barn and my cousins and I would climb all over them and more than a few times we'd find new kittens. we'd never care if rats or mice were around and seriously don't recall many of those and maybe the cats had something to do with that.

being a dairy farm he only would send a few cows to the butcher for close family members and our freezer was always full.

so you dug down and then SIDEWAYS as a 10 year old. any structural supports going sideways or was that why your dad made you fill up the hole?

I never had a doubt you knew that you were ok digging that hole at your son's and dang that dirt or clay looks as hard as cement. i picked up a HF jackhammer that does a pretty good job busting up stuff if i need to.

Andy how are your Corps of engineer flood control levys or what ever you call them holding up.

I believe you said Key Stone lake backs on to your property from time to time. Well the Tulsa news said Key Stone is 20 foot above Normal and they are releasing a 100,000 gallons of water a second at the dam. Up from 85,000 Gallons a second from earlier this afternoon.

We received another inch or so of rain tonight and the bridge North of me is covered in 4 inches of water. Normally a inch of rain wouldn't even show up in the small??? creek, stream??? Well I don't even know what to call it because its dry most of the time and probably doesn't even drain a half square mile of land before the Bridge. I guess Gully is the best description for it if I had to guess on it. It's a 8 + foot drop to the bottom when its dry though.

Great looking sawmill Andy, looks like fun to me. I've wanted to go to the show in Pawnee but haven't been able to make it for various reasons.

I pulled another brass radiator our this weekend that makes 3 I need to bring over along with 4 aluminum wheels and some misc. stuff as well. Maybe time to make a trip soon.

You're right this child has a wonderful childhood!

She has a four year old brother she is learning to torment. It's good for him too.

The original Legos. My cousin and I would build ramparts with connecting tunnels in his dad's barn, a big old barn meant for loose hay. then his dad would fall into the tunnels...

Great sport! Grandmothers are like that.

Even on a 200 acre farm kids can find lots of things to have fun doing!

Barn cats absolutely love mice and rats. As do owls. We used to see owls way up in the barn sleeping through the day.

Lots of work on a dairy farm. One of my uncles had a dairy, but they were energetic folks, also had beef cattle, goats, sheep, and hogs. Hogs were cheap when I was a kid so they always ate pork or chicken. She was the aunt that, when we showed up just before lunch, said "I'd better fix another chicken", I followed her outside where she grabbed one and killed it in a flash and had it plucked, while we visited, in no time.

Keystone is backed up into our bottom now. I'll go down and see how high it is on the big water outlet if I have time.

My main concern is cows will swim the creek when it's up seemingly with no regard for their little calf who will swim along behind, struggling. Cows with big belly's float a lot easier than young calves.

Thanks, JB. I'm glad to have the sawmill. Trying to find time to mess with it. :( I've got several logs to cut right now, and pasture to spray...

Oooh! Brass radiator!!

You know you are welcome any time, with or without scrap.:bounce:

Glad your nephew is home.

Something good must be happening, not even time to take pictures.:spit:

Yeah, I need some more Saturdays. Where does all the time go?

So that's where my Saturdays have been going. I think I found all your Mondays. :)

May be. Can you give me any more, please? I promise I try to use your Saturdays well.

I did make it down to the bottom to look at the large water outlet. Looks like about four feet of lake water backed up into the structure. It's about 12 ft and 8 ft showing.

The fill area looks stable, but I need to take out an elm which has chosen to take up residence.

Ah hay bales! I miss the smell.

I do still enjoy the smell. Glad your book is coming together.

Been busy, I did have time to melt a bunch of ingots. About 40# yesterday.

Made a scale for my pressurized oil storage level gauge.

attachment.php

I'll improve the clip, but the idea is to set it when you start and then read directly how many quarts were used on a melt.

I received my Pyroceram glass. Supposed to be good to 1,472F for short durations. Web site says you can cut it like annealed glass. One piece 10-1/2" by 11" was $40. I didn't want to cut it and screw it up but today was the day I bit the bullet. Cut like a dream.

My weekend is over, starts again tomorrow!

I really hated cutting expensive glass. But, like most things, it was easy in the end.

Several more glass videos coming to a computer near you soon. Making new wooden parts to do something a little different.

We're actually doing much better than expected, but then again we have low expectations.

That is interesting that cows have little regard for their young in the water. Have you ever lost any in fast water?

I don't know. They seem to just swim off and then call them from the other bank. We don't really have much fast water, and I don't think I've ever lost one that way. I've been very nervous watching them the few times I have witnessed it. Nothing I can do at that point, too late to build fences. The cows may be smarter than me. They may know what their calves can do and act accordingly. Including just swimming off from a reluctant calf to force it to swim after them, knowing it will be OK. I can't presume I know more than a cow. I bring them food and they eat it. Who's in charge?

My weekend is over, starts again tomorrow!

Amazing how much time the uninteresting stuff seems to take, isn't it? And as soon as you start on something interesting, the time just flies by.

Don't wear yourself out working too many Saturdays in a row! You probably need a day of rest today before starting in again next week.

I'd say you're in charge, since you decide when they go up the road.

But they don't know that...

God bless yall Okalahoma, Texas etc. Hope yall are kept clear of the storms. I hate the "Particulary Dangerous Situations" tornado days like that. Watching the weather channel reminds me of us in the April 27, 11 outbreak here in dixie alley. I was in a mri machine :shocking: they called me and said lots of people cancelled, you want to come early? That was the only time i had doctors waiting on me. :lol_hitti

Thanks for your concern!

We just don't worry about them, they are so small the area they hit is highly unlikely to actually hit you, as opposed to a hurricane.

But, for today, all the warnings have been cancelled, there is a really dark big thunderstorm line bearing down on us but the technology says it's not a tornado producing line. All the weather research has paid off.

MRI machine is about as safe as it gets, I imagine.

Glad it worked out for you Andy, as it usually does for most of us. I had some really bad rain I drove through on the way home but all is well just a bit of flooding to drive around.

We had 7 inches last night. That's plenty for one day.

Glad you're enjoying a vacation, Don. After I responded to Hubbscrub we had a storm with the markers to produce a tornado develop SW of us moving NE. Missed. But we talked about taking cover. Had milk and cookies instead.

We had no issues other than flooded roads and wind and rain. Today we have 73F, light breeze, and bright sunshine.

You are starting to have quite a following on YouTube these days. I think a few of them just want to see exploding glass. The new glass is impressive and I am waiting to see if the "non stick" ideas work.
Keep up the experiments. [emoji106][emoji106]

YouTube is a funny venue. A lot of discussion goes on in the comments section under videos but unlike a Garage Journal thread it is soon buried as a video gets old. I'm really not used to it.

I've wondered about the attraction of exploding glass. I'm really not much of a showman or promoter. Let the cards fall where they may. for what it's worth, my last video has no glass.:shocking:

But making the videos is improving my casting skills, ever so slowly.

Have you considered using a metal with a lower melting point (lead) when casting under glass?

I had not considered that. I need to look into the viscosity and surface tension of molten lead. Thanks!

Looking like a pro Andy. Nice work.

Thank you, Bobby!

Andy, thanks for the video! Had to take a few breaks but I made it to the end. When I make instead of buy it takes about the same time. Finished my exhaust pipe butane torch holders in about the same amount of time as UPS or the Post Office would take to deliver the ABS ones. Then again, if I tried to make a video, I'd still be working on it.
