12pt Socket Master set

I'm working on the last few missing pieces to fill my new tool chest, and having a hell of a time finding a master set of 12 point sockets.

I'm looking for 1/4, and 3/8 drive to match your standard Hansen socket rails. Both SAE and Metric.

For 1/2" drive I'm looking for 3/8 - 1.5" in 1/16 increments (no misses) deep AND shallow. As well as metric 10 to at least 27, but preferably 36mm, deep and shallow as well.

I don't care about brand, Chinese is fine. More concerned with a complete matching set with no missed sizes and reasonably priced.

The best I've been able to find is some Craftsmen sets, but there's still lots of misses.

Tekton has been great for my 6pt sockets, just wish they made the same sets for 12pt. :(

Any ideas guys and gals?

Since you don't care on brand, why not just buy regular "master" sets then add in a few miscellaneous sockets here and there to fill in the blanks on the socket trays?

Wow! Tekton you beauties! Thanks for finding that Chevy, their site was down earlier today and I hadn't checked their stuff in the last 4-6mths. Wonderful!

Jeeze. How can anybody even begin to compete with Tekton at those prices for that level of selection and quality. The OP can even have matching sockets for noise money.

For 1/2 drive metric 12pt sockets I went with Gearwrench 80730, 37pcs for deep and shallow 9MM-36MM, and 14MM-32Mm for deeps. I think I paid around $100 from eBay.

Also Gearwrench for 3/8 6MM-19MM deep and shallow 12pt

What is meant by “master set”? Just another word for big or comprehensive, or something specific? Thanks.

That's what I consider it. I think a proper master set includes a drive tool, extensions, extensive amount of sockets, and a case.

When I think of a complete socket set, I think of every socket no skips in that drive size. I think the only time I ever order a "master set" was a set of pass through sockets and ratchet. That ratchet broke, after some of the sockets broke. I no longer own it.

Yes exactly. Master set being a "complete set" namely no skips and a comprehensive size array. For example 3/8 to 1.5" on each increment.

Not 3/8 to 3/4 like these piddly sets often have.

And no skips is important. For example many metric sets skip 16mm. If you've ever worked on a Volkswagen, you'll understand how critical that error is.

If I come across a single fastener I don't have a socket for, my whole job stops. The rest of my tools become useless. I've had this happen more times than I can count. Being rural or often doing Sunday work when major stores are closed delays that job even further.

So having the piece of mind that I can easily tackle anything that Mr Imagineer dreams up is critical for me. I never know what I'll be working on. It could be a highway-tractor, it could be weed whacker or even a computer. I need to be able to tackle anything, within reason.

The way I look at it: Even a Chinese $2 socket is better than a $50 Snap-On if it's the correct size that's needed.

So for these reasons I've only bought master sets for this toolbox build. (Same for 6 point, torx, hex, triple squares, wrenches, etc).

I'm not concerned about ratchets and adapters included because I just buy adapter/extension master sets too. :)

PS I just came across another great 12pt master set offerer on Amazon. You guys have inspired me to dig deeper. Zenith. Chinese, but a nice cheap option.

I think I'm personally going to grab a 3/8" drive metric Zenith set (6mm-24mm) to patch me through until the Tektons come in. The Tekton's to 38mm is incredible and trusted quality.

12 metric and sae, no skips. William's from SO.

Not much more than an cheap Taiwan set, made in USA quality

Get the Williams, made in the good ol USA!,my gosh!

Which Williams sets / numbers are you referring to specifically? The only sets I'm finding in 1/2" drive deep, for example, is 10mm-24mm and is around $120, or 10mm-36mm for $195. The same size ranges in Tekton is $55 for 10mm-24mm, and for $125 you get 10mm-38mm (which is an extra 2 large sizes further than the Williams set).

These are also prices on the no-letters PN Williams sets, which are all Made in Taiwan, just like the Tekton's. Being in Canada I might not know all the best US tool sites to check pricing and availability, but I'm having a hard time even finding 12-point sets in the Made in US version of the Williams.

Not saying that's not worth it for some people, but double the price is a bit more than "not much more" IMO, especially when it's Williams' Taiwan versions anyways. OPer is also looking for a set that goes all the way up to 36mm+ and I'm not even seeing that option
