Hello, I’m new to this forum but in my vain attempt to start fixing/restoring an old Reed vise left to me by the previous home owner I have run into a bit of a problem. I want to break the vise down to clean, grease and repaint. Thanks to this forum I realized I didn’t break the two piece ring around the spindle shaft. Mine just popped out as I was trying to open the dynamic jaw which is pretty ceased up. There was no set screw so I guess that’s why it popped out. I can pull the spindle completely out without a problem, but I cannot get the spindle to pull the dynamic jaw out of the static jaw. I can get the end of the dynamic jaw to the inside of the static jaw but then the spindle disengages from its threaded hole and I can’t get the two pieces apart. Not to mention once I do this it is extremely hard to get the spindle rethreaded to put the jaw back in. I’ve worked the vise with tons of breaking fluid and grease. I’m leery of beating on the vise. Quite frankly I’m beginning to wonder if the jaw is even supposed to come out it is stuck so bad. Anyway, does anyone know if I’m missing a step or if this should not come apart?
