3/8 impact options

I currently own a ir212 impact that has over the years been on/off reliable. it works sometimes, sometimes it won't impact. I have disassembled/cleaned/lubed it countless times but sometimes it just doesn't work.

That being said, when it works I really like the gun. It is powerful enough for most things I would use a 3/8 for and I have a 1/2 for bigger stuff. But what I like most is the size, not just length but in overall head shape size, and the triangular kinda shape of it can get into some really tight areas.

For a job I am an industrial mechanic at a corrugated plant. At work I use an 18v makita 3/8 and and home I also have an m12 fuel 3/8 that I use quite a bit but for working on/under cars I usually prefer airtools (and these may sound like stupid reasons) because they feel/sound right to me and because they seem to clean up better than cordless tools when you get into the really greasy and oily work.

Sorry for so much boring background, I'll get to the point...

I am in the market for another 3/8 air impact to replace my 212 that is getting frustrating to use. I'm contemplating replacing it with another 212, but some of the newer "stubby" ones seem interesting. Specifically looking at the ir15qmax or possibly the aircat 1076xl. I'm generally a pretty big fan of ir tools and have quite a few, but I see aircat has a pretty good following as well and since the ir is made overseas anyway I don't really have a brand preference in this case. They certainly have more power, but look bulkier than my 212 but it is hard to say without actually seeing one in person and since no stores seem to carry any air tools besides their house brands I am buying blind. So... has anyone actually used any of these mentioned tools (or better yet more than one so you have a comparison) and can vouch for the "bulkiness" or lack-thereof? Any other particular gun you would recommend if size is the biggest concern?

If I was in the states me too would seriously look at the Astro (Onyx here) Nano 3/8 impact. I'd probably get it in 1/2", just because most of my impact sockets are 1/2". But 3/8 makes sense with the theme of keeping it small to maximise capabilities. Hard to beat the power:weight:size ratio of those little compacts, they pack a good punch too.

I'd step up the the IR titanium, I'm on my 2nd one and beat the hell out of it and just keeps going.

I would say the astro nano 3/8 impact is a good choice. Eric O of SMA uses one daily and has proven it gets the job done.

I really hadn't considered the astro... only because I had never really considered them an air tool company but it does get favorable reviews...

As far as the ir titanium I agree, I've had a 2135 for quite some time and it has taken it's share of abuse. I'm just not sure on the size aspect... it appears almost as big as my 1/2".

It's not even close in size, mine are at work so can't take any pictures but it's considerably smaller. I like the fact that the composite is light and IMO a better balanced impact.

I own three IR impacts, the 2135TiMax, the 2115QTiMax and the 35Max...I use the 2135 all the time, the other two rarely get used because I usually grab my Dewalt DCF890 first, it's nearly as powerful as the 2115 in most practical use so if it can't remove things I'm stepping up to 1/2" anyway and the stubby is nice, but rarely do I need it's more compact form factor over the full size 1/2".

I guess what I'm saying is the best home combo is a full size 1/2" air plus a decently powerful/compact 3/8" cordless.

They've been making air tools since like the 70's
Yes, I thought about how dumb that sounded after I typed it... I was hoping nobody would pick up on it lol. I can't really explain how that was meant to come across.

I agree... at work I have ir2135ti and a makita 18v brushless 3/8 (can't remember the model number) then at home I have an ir231, ir212, and Milwaukee m12 fuel 3/8. Really just looking for something to replace the 212.

Thanks for the replies everyone, after the recommendations here and reading the favorable reviews on amazon I'm giving the nano more serious consideration.

I've done my fair share of research and as soon as I save up some pennies, the Astro 3/8" and some of their low profile sockets are going in my Amazon cart.

Right now just on a string of low luck, not bad, just low!

Great support in the US with Astro & they have a bunch of great impact tools. I'd get the deal they have on here for the nano torx & hex sockets along with their small stubby sockets. In 3/8 you would have a setup that will get into spots no battery tool will.

I don't have the model numbers handy but have been very happy with my matco 3/8. It's sold for a lot less branded as carlyle. The gun I use 90% of the time at work is a husky 1/2 stubby. I don't know if they make a 3/8 version but it would be worth checking out.

I dont see any point in getting a "full-size" 3/8 impact.

Mine is a nano from astro.

Does anyone have the Proto 3/8 mini or Mac equivalent? I’ve been looking at the Proto but it’s twice the money as the Nano.

If your looking at the 3\8 astro i actually found it cheaper off Wal-Mart with free shipping. Comes from another company besides Wal-Mart but saved me ten bucks compared to Amazon

I recently picked up their ball joint press kit on Walmart.com for cheaper than most no name eBay versions so I wouldn't doubt it.

AWP038M is not made by aircat, nice tools, I got the facom branded versions .

Most of these all around 450 torque range .
Astro a bargain and can be had under 100bucks plus it real tiny and hits hard if giving it plenty air and over 100psi
aircat nice composite design and setting switch on trigger will be preference by some .

Well I got the astro 1828 nano yesterday! I haven't tried it much yet but it seems like I'll like it. Far more power than the 212. A few of the negative reviews mentioned poor trigger control and that the speed dial on the rear didn't seem to help much... I have found those to be unfounded, at least on the one I got.

Compared to the 212 size-wise, the nano is obviously far shorter front to back, but it does have slightly more "girth" as I suspected but barely. I have included some comparison pics for those of you wondering. It's a fair trade off for the extra power and shorter length I suppose. So far I'd say I'm satisfied with the purchase. I will update if I change my mind after I get a chance to use it more.

Thanks Garage Journal for the recommendation [emoji106] since this wasn't in my original list of considerations.b5ae463b7693e9f2743e97bb52062839.jpg4b1a544a5edc26b81db2e11ca9f97764.jpg5741fc2bf6a01a6d4c08d0f3c12a3a28.jpg

On a side note... I have tried the milton 657 swivel on this. I am paranoid about it beginning to leak eventually, but so far so good. Does anyone know off the top of their head what size o-rings are in there so I can make sure to have them on hand?

Hard complain full stop on the astro considering the cost .
I use one professionally and can't really fault it compared to ones twice the cost or bigger impacts.
Very usable tool with good power . Hope you keep enjoying it .

Lot of the taiwan air tool makers are doing that style with twist power dial and 2 rear push button fwd/rev .
