Glad you have the gear going your way Andy, just some minor setbacks, but as you say failure is just a learning experience. Kinda like making light bulbs, I wonder if you could cast a light bulb for my garage, it isn't working for me.

It your light bulb is not working, cast it into the trash bin.

I think light bulbs can be cast using LED.:)

Man, that's fun to watch.

Thank you very much!!

It's fun to do too...

That was very well done. Managed to achieve your goal using only green sand and found out what was going on with the runner.

Great progress and next level achieved.:bowdown:

Albeit with a little extra cheek! :D

Thanks, Guster! I think I can do better if I need to pour a third one.

Great use of the language! Cheek as a verb and noun.

I have always been accused of being cheeky so no one has ever complimented me on having extra cheek.:bowdown:

Will the hot metal "forge weld" itself together since your pour hole froze up and you changed to the large hole? Or will there be a weak line where the two meet? Great video.

Good point, it is very bad practice to pour from two directions although foundries do it occasionally simultaneously. Generally in an extensive pattern yo do get what's called a "cold shut".

In this case the top of the mold was still quite hot and if not fluid, close. I am confident the heat of the direct pour will mix and fuse to the portion already in the mold. I did look for signs of cold shut on the tips of the teeth, where the metal would have been the coolest and subject to not fusing. I saw nothing but would not bet the farm that there are not some weak areas near at the tips of the teeth.

Wall brick in the furnace is 2,600F brick and the iron was about that before removing the crucible meaning the air flow in the furnace had to be 2,900F to over 3,000F to get the iron that hot. That temperature is doing damage to the wall brick. It has been coated with a 3,000F mortar which has turned to glass and there's a little shrinkage of the brick.

Kind of hard to see in the pictures, but every second the furnace is hot I'm puckered up wondering if the wall will fail.

I have 3,000F brick to replace it with, but it's not worn out yet.:lol_hitti

Gazza made a great sticker to remind us of Stephen Church aka 1/2 Cup and was kind enough to send me an electronic file which I 3D printed.

Steve sent me the Ford logo. Maybe the sticker would look good in aluminum.

Andy, took your WW1/2CD? and added it to my sig before asking you. Hope you don't mind.

WW1/2CD? was started to honor Stephen Church before he became ill, and he enjoyed the respect it conveyed.

I am pleased to see anyone honor Steve in any way, including a tribute such as that in their signature line.

On Page 246 of this thread, part of post 4901, I responded to Steve's post. His post:

Please excuse my ignorance as I may have missed something but I do have to ask about your signature line??

WW1/2CD?

Then my response:

Finally. No one except Guster has asked, and he did so privately. I checked with Bob and he knew. Hmmm. We agreed to wait until someone asked publicly. Maybe everyone understood. Maybe not.

So, thanks for asking.

In the US there is a logo WWJD, for "What Would Jesus Do?" Intended to make people think before they act. I've never been big on it, but it is pretty common.

So it comes down to my doing a little better job because I know I'm going to post pictures on GJ and know the average here does lots better than I do.

So I ask myself "What Would 1/2 Cup Do?" And I do a little better.

My signature line is just to honor an old man down under whom I have come to respect greatly.

And I was increasing the font regularly until someone asked. Glad it was you!!

And his response:

Andy that is just awesome.
I sincerely thank you and am truly humbled

I like the idea of the sticker in aluminum, Andy. I would like one of those also for !/2 Cup's memory. Any idea on the price? Let us know.

Andy, the gear appears to have come out much better this time. I do have to ask though, what is the reasoning behind making the sprue so thin as well as the runner. You may have explained it in the past and I've just forgotten. Also if you decide to produce some aluminum QST stickers I'd trade some casting stock and help you pour them.

Thanks Andy, all makes perfect sense now, and agree.
Love Steve's response.

:) I liked it then, I cherish it now. Thanks, Steve!

Love it I'll take one next time come to visit.

I hope to have one for you.

I'd like one of those 'stickers' in aluminum. Could you mold in 2 small pockets on the back to install magnets?

I'd be pleased. I have some 3/8" by 1/16" thick rare earth magnets I planned to epoxy to the back. Would that be sufficient?

Great! My plan is to collect emails of those interested at

[email protected]

I think price should be optional. No reason to limit someone who does not have the funds. After a couple of suggestions Andrew and the Church family suggests donations to Goulburn Valley Hospice Care, in appreciation for the great care they gave to Steve. I agree wholeheartedly. It takes me about an hour to make one so I suggest an hour of your rate of pay but that is just a suggestion.

The reasoning is trying to use the design standards I've learned. I'm still convinced the small runners will give the best results if I just learn to keep the slag out.

I'm not sure whether they take casting stock, probably better to just make a payment.:pimpflash

Good idea. Is there a standard size out there that is readily available at a box store?

Unless you can use my glue-on ones.

I liked those comments as well. I remember seeing the friendship being built here and on 1/2s thread and the smile it brought to my face.
I recall pondering what WW1/2CD ment...

Quality Shed Time, or Shop Time, or Garage Time is a legacy that will serve each of us long after we forget Steve originated it.

Even though you've asked on this thread, I need an email with your name and address so when it comes time to ship I don't miss anybody. I'm preparing to ship hammers and have found I struggle going through PM's to find recipients.

Sounds like a plan Andy. Thanks for letting us know.

My pleasure, Tim. Thanks for the email.

Hourly rate of pay? I don’t think my $7.95 will go very far. Lol. Thank you for doing the emblem for everyone.

Since the gear is relatively a simple, symmetrical shape and has mass to it, wouldn’t pouring straight into the big hole work for a part like this?

Look forward to more casting adventures.

Just went through your gear casting post and remembered a thread on a car forum years ago about when DART began casting their own cast iron blocks and heads. Wanting to protect their intellectual property, they didn't want to farm it out to one of the many foundries in their area, but IIRC, it took them almost 2 years to get the process down to offer products for sale. Definitely an art, and you are doing well!

Donations to a hospice organization all count. But I agree you are challenged. I'm having a blast making the emblem. I guess that's a good name for it.

Pouring in the big hole would work and obviously I did do that, twice. Nut pouring like that will entrain air and create porosity. Not damaging I imagine on a gear like this, but my goal is to make all castings as good as I can so I'm learning. So far I am learning. Slowly.

Interesting story. I am doing ok for small simple pieces.:lol_hitti

An engine block or even a common faucet would be a challenge at this point.

I've had some Quality Shed Time lately.

I've got two old blacksmith drill presses on the porch I picked up a few years ago. One has a home made table. Nicely made, but I decided to make a cast iron one. So I removed the factory table off the other press. Had a stud in the bottom which did not want to come out. I wore it down with patience and penetrant.

attachment.php

It had been drilled into and was rough so I filled it.

attachment.php

Also filled the QST pattern to get draft on the sides.

attachment.php

I'm using plastic wood filler and can shear it to the right angle with a sharp piece of wood. Works well.

I couldn't wait so made a mold from it.

attachment.php

And cast it. It's just for practice. No lettering on the back. But it came out OK, I may put it up at home.

attachment.php

I was afraid it would warp but looks good.

attachment.php

The largest feeler gauge I could get in the gap was 0.006".

attachment.php

Now I need to check the pattern to see how flat it is. Being the disk in the center is a flat shape I was afraid it would **** down in the middle upon solidification. For the first time I tried to use Chvorinov's Rule to size the feed riser and gate. It seems to have worked.

I made a video describing the process but it's a bit long. If you skip to the end you can see the pour and casting out of the sand.

Doc, I was fine until this morning. I watched a video and gray stuff, like brain matter, started leaking out of my ears.

Really, just wear ear plugs? OK, but how do I stop my eyes from bleeding?

Bob’s your uncle. You couldn’t ask for a better uncle.

I assumed the 1/2 Cup emblem was going to be about 3” long. Seeing it next to something to give it scale, wow, those are going to be great.

Try to tell my son that. He's afraid he'll catch some kind of disability, like not being able to leave an inviting statement alone.

Maybe he already has that.

Glad you like it. They had to be big enough to cast and see the lettering. About 1/2" thick and 6" long. They are actually 12 mm thick.

I poured another one this morning to test pattern modifications. This one pulled better but still had some sand damage so I made some more refinements.

Andy: that's a great looking badge/emblem to honor a great man. I'm still not over 1/2 Cup's passing and probably won't be for a while cause he's always been one of the best positive forces here on GJ and for me personally.

I heard thru the grapevine that you've done some cleaning too maybe in honor of 1/2 Cup or just because it's your thread's name. either way hope you are enjoying your SATURDAY while we are making some Raspberry freezer jam cause fresh berries are here now.

cheers

This is a fantastic forum!

I just finished 1/2 Cup's thread when he died. What a man! He produced so many nice things and as said always had a nice word and was positive. As i am reading many threads now I really see how he influenced people he never met in person.

And you are producing those emblems in his memory, Gazza those stickers. And some members stops posting for many days after. I just do as my father had done, tipping my imagined hat. I feel I should be investigating international payments...

The output from your QST looks nice. It looks like you soon will meet your goal of casting cast iron parts for your machines.

Don't forget to smell the roses.

Thanks for the visit, Drives! Steve's passing was hard on me too. Getting busy on the pattern for the emblem has helped a lot. But I'm spending a lot more time on it than I normally would. It's a home sand casting but I still want it to be nice.

It's been great weather here too, but I'm eager to get the pattern on a match plate and start casting.

You are welcome to an emblem if you like. Just send me an email with your name and address to [email protected].

The donation is suggested but not required.

Excellent and well done.

Thanks, Rian!!

Andy, work on the emblem looks great. Instructional video was interesting.
