Here is a vise that's a little different. A Roebling splicing vise or, to some, a riggers vise. I picked this up over the weekend at a local swap meet. When I was young the school had an all afternoon forestry class I took for a couple years. We just used a stump with holes for railroad spikes around the edges to secure the wire rope while learning to make three tuck eye splices. This one is supposed to hold rope from 3/8" all the way up to 1-1/2". I doubt I get into the rigging business but I thought it was too neat to leave behind. Ed.

Thanks Bob
I mistakenly listed the page under “Smitty’s Prentiss jewelers vise fund” I’ll sort it out once the goal is met.

Here is my latest eBay buy and I must say I’m happy with how it was made. I believe this was a handmade piece of industrial art. I don’t believe this was a production piece. The vise functions very well and has a nice tight feel to it.
The vise rotates in all directions and locks solid with the large brass knob. Definitely one of my more favorite vises now. The jaws are 2 1/4 wide and it opens to around 3in. I can’t wait to be able to make a better stand for the vise but the stand it’s on will have to work for now.

Bob,

It worked out great! $20 for as best I can tell an unused Schumacher 6/2 manual charger in the box. The same part number as my 35 year old - now dead - one except mine was made in USA and this is made in Mexico........sigh.

The slide for my Prentiss 518 is now in the soup powered by my battery charger, the dc power supply is retired after one use.

Is anyone looking for a Prentiss 23???...

It appears to have had a quickie "Navy Grey" restoration...When I tell you where it is, you'll understand the color...

No price is given...

However, both the Emmert and the Cole "Vise and Stand", can be had for $350.00....:bounce:

All available on the Pensacola, FL Craigslist...As of yesterday...

The "Home of Naval Aviation" and the Blue Angels, has some serious clampers for sale...

Or....

The Palm Coast Craigslist, will net you this 125mm York (that's about 5 inches for you folks who are "metrically challenged", like me...)....:spit:

Or...

The Daytona Craigslist, will net you, this "Giant Vice"...It's a Parker...I'm guessing a 5 or 6 inch...

Both can be had for $ 150.00...

Happy Hunting!!!!

I picked up this Reed No. 105 R vise yesterday at an estate sale. This is one heavy vise. I also picked up the tiny red vise marked 4.

Ken, you should try picking up its big brother the Reed 106. I've got two of them, and they are brutes!

Howdy fellas! Been a few months since I've checked in; busy with work and some house improvement work, but I'm trying to catch up! I haven't been totally cured of the vise bug and have grabbed a few more interesting buggers along the way. I was planning on trying to catch up all the way, but I came across this stretch of the discussion and I just had to respond as I have an example of the older Parker No. 87's as well as a recently acquired (and entirely and utterly seized) 289 1/2. I don't know how I'm going to unseize it - the damn thing is so heavy.

IMG-20181012-194449.jpg

I'm not too sure when this guy was made, but I do believe it pre-dates the 43x models.

IMG-20190525-130956.jpg

Also, just to reiterate for anyone who hasn't ever seen one of these things in person, they are just...friggin' big...

GETRIDAONE - what was wrong with your plate? Mine is missing entirely.

You guys are killing me with these big combination Parkers! Those are some of the coolest vises ever!!

If you think that's killing you, try moving one that is frozen into one solid piece, by yourself! haha

But, I'm with you, after catching up on 100+ pages of this thread, I've suddenly caught the urge for a big 8"er for no reason other than I want one.

The round piece with the bolt in it was completely broken off the bottom. There was just enough thread left to get the shoulder bolt from the 976 base to hold tight.

This big ol Prentiss 182 1/2 just popped up on the board for fifty bucks. The vise has 5” jaws and weighs in at 120 lbs. It looks well preserved under all of that paint.98772d7a7758947eef6def88e11bae65.jpg6b34f6e811680b69d2110ff05b4f68ad.jpg

I found this on CL on Friday. (An older reed swivel jaw!) I emailed the seller withing 30 minutes of it being posted. It said to make a reasonable offer. Within an hour I spoke to the seller and made an offer which was agreed on. She said it was her late husbands. I was on my motorcycle and couldnt pick it up right away. The seller said I could get it on Sunday. Later Friday evening the seller texts me and said that her son had already sold the vise and she didnt know. My BS detector went off and I sent a disapointed text back. She claimed her son didnt have cell service where he was and that she was sorry. Im guessing someone made a better offer and she didnt want to be up front about it. I hope that wasnt the case if it was a GJ member.

How would a GJ member know you had already made a deal with the seller?

The vise is in my garage now. I emailed the seller three hours after it had been posted. I offered $50 because that was about all it was worth to me since I’m 100 miles away. About an hour later the phone rang and I didn’t answer but she left a message. Message said she wouldn’t be home Saturday or Sunday but I could come get it Monday. Knowing Monday wouldn’t work for me I called her back and said I could come get it now and she agreed. After two hours of Seattle/Tacoma traffic I got there at 8:30. While I was looking at the vise she said someone offered her $75 but they couldn’t come until next week. Never a word about already agreeing to a deal with someone else. So $50 for the vise, $30 in gas, $20 for a ferry ride home and four hours of my time. That’s why I only offered $50. I didn’t expect to get a call back.

She said she pulled the listing because she got too many offers and was going to relist on Monday. I’m sure you noticed the other vise is listed again. She has another “smaller vise” that she hasn’t found yet and a garage full of her husband’s tools that I think she is planning to get rid of. If you are closer than me it might be worthwhile to go look at the other vise because there may be some other deals to be had there. It was too late for me at the time and really too far away to follow up.

As far as vise karma goes, a couple weeks ago there was an Athol listed for $50 in Marysville. I’m sure you saw it since the ad lingered for a couple days. I called right after it was listed and he agreed to sell it to me but I asked if I could come by a little later in the evening to avoid Friday afternoon traffic. When I called him back at 7pm guess what? No answer. Text, email, nothing. Tried again the next morning and gave up. Maybe it was a GJ member offering more than what we had agreed on.

Anyone know the manufacturer of this little hand vise? The jaws are 1 7/16" wide. Labeled "C.D.-U.S.A." but couldn't find anything relevant to C.D. as a vise manufacturer in a search. Probably nothing special, just something I picked up cheap at the flea market to use if I need to hold something too small for the main vise.

Simple Green, I’m going to need about 10 gallons.

Consider it an investment in your vise cleaning future. :bounce:

Right now, I have 5 gallons of SG sitting in 2 big plastic jugs down in the garage just waiting for the next assignment.

It’s reusable.

Hey Shift. Yeah I’m gonna have to find a croc pot and start cooking the paint off. They just re-formulated the paint and epoxy stripper that I’ve been using and it’s worthless now. It takes a whole quart to strip one small vise and it doesn’t burn your skin on contact anymore.

Stay frosty, there’s a good deal just around the corner.

Thanks for the encouragement, Smitty.
The last time I was at a Goodwill looking for vintage Hawaiian shirts, I glanced over on the appliance shelf and saw 3 suitable crock pots. $9.99 seemed to be the universal asking price.
Depending on what your time is worth, just order a new one and get it shipped by Amazon.

Today a NOS York 125 arrived in the mail, I'm very happy with it. As usual, I had it shipped from the Czech republic.

I came across a interesting drill press vise I've never seen before. It's brass tagged "The Producto Machine Co" Bridgeport ct. It has a unusual design - there is only about 3/4" movement of the screw handle, you push the dynamic jaw, then insert the lever into one the groves, then tighten the handle. It's a 3" jaw, body is 8 1/2". Marked 101 with no other markings. I don't know if was made by Producto or owned and brass tagged by Producto. Anyone have any info on this one?

I didn't see any replies to my post, any ideas on this drill press vise? Did I stump the experts?

Tombat,

I was only saying that I hope someone from GJ didnt knowingly pull something underhanded. It sounds to me like you did it fair and square. There is no hard feelings here. It sounds like you DEFINITELY earned that Reed. My problem is with the seller only. I emailed her within thirty minutes of it being posted on Friday. She said nothing of others being interested. She told me that her next available time for someone to look at it was Sunday. We agreed on a price and she said we had a deal and she would consider it sold. Later that evening she text and fed me a lie about her son selling it without her knowledge. I am not interested in dealing with her again. In this case I am certainly glad it went to a GJ member. I hope you enjoy it.

Mr. Wonderful,

This exact same scenario happened to me last Friday on a little Versa-Vise here in Dallas. I saw the post on OfferUp and it was just about 5 mins from my office...of course I saw the ad shortly after I had pulled into my driveway some 15 miles away. I reached out to the guy and said, "hey, I'll take it, but I just got home and don't want to fight traffic, can I pick it up on tomorrow or Monday?" And I went on to tell him that I'd be happy to pay him 50% now, to hold it, through PayPal, Venmo, or the OfferUp app. He says, "Sure man! No problem, I get traffic. What time you want to come by Monday?" I respond that I'm pretty open, just let me know what time works for him and I'll make it happen. Not 10 minutes later I get a notification saying that the vise had sold. I reached out to him asking if he canceled the auction for me and he replies that someone offered him full price and already picked it up. :wtf:

It was frustrating, but it happens. I suppose, like Mr. Wonderful, that I just wish the sellers would be more forthright from the start. Either say you're willing to wait and or say, "sorry, first come, first serve" and that's that (and totally reasonable, might I add).

I dont know if its greed that drives this or fear of just being up front and saying you dont trust someone elses word. I am sure most of us have been ghosted by a buyer that doesnt show up after agreeing on a time and place. I try to give the benefit of the doubt. If someone sounds like a bad used car salesman on the phone I usually wont hold an item. If they sound genuine and dont expect too much I will work with them. Rant over, Im off my soap box, and now back to vises...........

Mr. Shiftless stopped by today and we traded some vises, so as of today I have a really clean Reed 3C in my inventory :) Nice to meet you.

The 3C will most likely become my large to go vise instead of my 206R.
