I know Schlage isn't the be all and end all of locks. Far from it, I suppose. I've used Abloy (Finland) and Medeco, but I was surprised to find out that Schlage stuff is now being made in China. Haven't looked at locks in years, I guess.

Yeah, but they're still better than Kwikset or other cheap-o brands. I guess it's a middle brand or upper end of the cheaper locks.

I still have a few Kwiksets on my house I'm swapping over to Schalge. I'm happy with them so far. Hopefully they are still the same quality. I still wish that they were made in USA though.

I guess I won't be buying anymore Schalge lock sets.

LOL. Remember that Chinese money is paying for Medicare, roads, bridges, economic bailout, our military spending, food stamps, unemployment benefits, space program, schools ...

Gotta keep buying Chinese stuff to make sure that the funds don't run out for all these programs.

We have to pay China back billions of dollars somehow, thinks to the big chief and his plan to bail the banks out. We will need more from China if he gets his health plan to pass :headscrat

Lets send them a billion dollar bomb, I've always wanted to see a mushroom cloud live on TV in HD, it's not the same if it's not live or in HD (for those that will say look at the old footage).

Medeco would be a good replacement. I believe that member American Lockpicker somewhat liked at least some their stuff. It isn't the be-all end-all but not bad.

Interesting experience with Schlage vs. Kwikset yesterday. I went to a house with a Realtor where the locksmith was having to re-key or pick the lock. He walked up, looked at it and said "damn, an old Schlage". He worked at it for a while and ended up drilling it. The process took close to 20 minutes. In the process he said "if this had been a Kwikset I could have picked the lock faster than you could have opened the lockbox and retrieved the key." He said even the newer Schlage are much easier to pick. It sure made me think about our locks at home.

We don't need a ****, All we need to do is add a heavy import tax (like they do us) to their **** they ship to us, then our USA made stuff would not look so Expensive to us and maybe we would get our jobs back

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ABOUT THE US/MEX BORDERS

This is from their website:

Schlage was acquired by Ingersoll Rand, a Fortune 150 manufacturer of industrial, mining, and construction equipment, in 1974. As a result of the acquisition, Schlage Lock became part of the Ingersoll Rand Door Hardware Group.

Expansion continued under Ingersoll Rand, and, in 1975, Schlage acquired lock manufacturing facilities in New Zealand.

The Security, Colorado, plant located just south of Colorado Springs was opened in 1976 and now produces Schlage's cylindrical and mortise locksets as well as Schlage's Patented Key Systems.

Schlage also operates plants in Tecate and Ensenada Mexico, where locks are assembled and some parts are manufactured, plated, and polished.

No mention of the far east. They say cylindrical locksets are built in Colorado, it's not clear just what locks are built in the Mexico plants.

Do you have a link? Are they building all their locks there, or just some of them?

Sorry, I don't have a link. I saw this with every Schlage at HD and the ones I looked at at local lock smith. I'm going to ask the smith what's the deal with Schlage and China next week.

Maybe Schlage is just making the cheapos for HD and other "big box" stores....

These were all tagged Made in China.

I was also surprised how many "accessories" like strike plates, etc were made in China or Taiwan.

Especially considering that I've ordered a lot of this stuff in the past, talked to people who make it and distribute it, and it's not expensive to make this stuff in the US. Especially for the damn prices they're charging for China ****.

I bought my last one,(Schalge) Put it on my shop. Lasted 3 months and would not unlock with factory key. Called the company and they did not care because I did not have the box to tell them the model number. Threw it in the garbage and will never by another.

Dirty Jobs was at the demolition of the Schlage factory in California. I believe Rowe mentioned that the production had moved to China. I could be wrong tho.

I agree with you, but be careful. Many "knowers" here will flame you for making such statements.

Tax the Hell out of Chinese products. Raise the duty fees 1000%!

I know for a fact that Schlage still currently has mexican operations.

What I really dislike about the China manufacturing is when you send a product there to be manufactured, not only is it built, but it is COPIED and sold under a no-name and ends up being sold at Harbor Freight.

They have no ethics, and there is nothing that we can do to stop it.

Schlage locks were being made in Mexicali in the 1980's. Plant was located down the street from the Firestone wheel rim plant and the Peterbuilt plant that was building glider kits.

I installed a comercial duty Schlage lock-set last week at work. It looked exactly like the 30 year old one I was replacing but it sure didnt fit right. I spent about a hour grinding and filing to get it installed. $276 from Grainger.

Last week I went to the local Red Wing Shoe dealer to get a new pair of of work boots. They used to have one wall of American made boots and the other wall was the Chinese made Worx brand. Now there is a small display with about 10 pairs of USA made boots, Everything else in the store made in China. Pretty sad.

When I was in college i got a summer job painting with a commercial painting company.

We painted the interior of the schlage lock company building and their equimpment. It was the 1980s and they were still making them in San Francisco! A friend of the family worked there for over 30 years as the timekeeper. Another friend worked a press there for over 20.

No more jobs like that in SF for sure. We had nothing but Schlage locks in our house. In fact, almost every lock I ever saw in the SF growing up was a Schlage or Kwikset.

I recently put in a Schlage exterior lock and deadbolt in my garage man door and the POS gets sticky when it gets cold or wet. I put some WD40 in it, but it only helps for a while.

Too bad.

Go to your local Locksmith shop. They will tell you what is worth buying. I am sure if you told them "I do not want China stuff" they will point you in the right direction.

The local shop here took care of me after the local news ran a story and showed everyone how exactly to "bump" house locks......

They are all junk in the home improvement line up Kwikset has a better lock cylinder then Schlage by a grate deal. Kwikset can be a big pain to install (Titen line up) depending on witch model you get and you can't exit from a locked door without unlocking it (In the event of fire children or elderly could be in trouble). Schlage you can exit with a locked door and get locket out (made me lots of cash)

Yale has a nice lock but they don't or didn't have adjustable back set latches when I whose in the trade. If you opened to door and hit the wall the door would lock and you could get locked out. Had a few call from this.

You are better of upgrading to a Grade 2 heavy duty residential lock and dead bolt (Dead bolt is your only security) in what ever brands function you like. You can get them for about $35.00 each and well worth it IMO.
