That's some top shelf stuff. I can only afford the Vinegar and PB Blaster mix.

You don't need a machine shop - just find a pair of bars (scrap yard) that fit inside your vise jaws, grind to shape (4" mini grinder),OR add in a couple of pieces of shaped wood so you get an even push, drill and tap one bar 2X and go...

I got some parts from tractor supply co that I'm going to throw together to get something close to this. Thanks for the inspiration

I found a very early Prentiss no. 59 Coach-Makers vise. The vise has 4 1/4” jaws and weighs in at 48 lbs. I’m putting this in the 1905 - 1910 range.

I was digging around my basement, looking for something else, and found this Toledo No00 single-side pipe vise, marked 1469 near the base. It was among my grandfather’s stuff. 1940s, ‘50s, maybe? I don’t know why he had it, since no-one in the family was a plumber.

A few days ago I decided to clean up the Toledo pipe vise and give it a coat of BLO, then took some pictures. Found a patent number on it; it’s not listed in DATAMP, so here’s the pdf on Google Patents.
As far as I can see, Waynard R Vosper’s patent covers just the tandem screw/shaft mechanism.

I like it a lot! I found -2- different styles of swivel bases, maybe the 2nd example is yours? KMScott is fast! He already has you in the spreadsheet.

Good luck finding a donor swivel base. If you do, play the lottery immediately.

If it's be said somewhere in this thread I don't see it but I bought a 3 1/2 craftsman vise from estate sale for $15 looks as not used much if any, but its missing the lock down foe the swivel base, after searching Amazon and google search I can't seem to find one, where do you guys find that part, looks universal.

I bet a carriage bolt and a nut would fix you up for the lock down.

Is the bolt still there? generally those had a carriage bolt, and you can make the nut handle assy from a coupler nut *all thread section) and drill a cross hole in one end. the turn handle can be a long 1/4 or 5/16ths bolt, round the hex head with a grinder, then use a jamb nut after installing, to the end of the the threads, hack saw the leftover threads off (a little proud) and peen them down to ensure its not coming off.. Done!

Thanks, the nut is also missing and I don't think it was ever installed, the paint is not rubbed off.

What is the OD of the base? I have a couple of Kurt vise bases, and one is going on my 6" American Scale - pretty much a perfect fit functionally, if not the "correct" base...

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to prevent other users from using your vise? Im in a shop working with 1 inch to 10 inch HDPE pipes.. sometimes stainless steel pipes of the same size.. We have two large work benches .. everyone has there cheap chinese vises mounted at there end of the bench.. Im planning on bringing in a real vise and dont want others to abuse it while im out of the shop at jobsites.. do you guys just chain and padlock the **** out of them?

Maybe put a swing away hasp on the framing of the table, below the table surface. Then a long loop bicycle style padlock could go through the hasp and wrap around the vise handle and nose. The ball at the end of the vise handle can slip through this style lock so you’ll have to get creative there...

Too bad you can’t trust the others to keep their grubby paws off of your tools. A vise is certainly a tool. You lock your tool box when you’re away? I assume so.

Locks are just a way to demonstrate forcible entry ... but that can be useful.

Thanks guys. Outlaw, the circular base is about 9-1/2" - 10" in diameter. I have a couple mill vise swivel bases here, I'll have to see if they're close.

I think I may have a swivel lock that would work for that vise - I can't promise that it's in primo-condition though. Do run down to the Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever is near you and get a carriage bolt that will run up through the bottom of the vise and stick out about 3/4" and then private message me the size of carriage bolt you needed to get and I'll see what I have to send you.

Anyway, I was foolin' around on eBay lookin' at vises last night and I came across a pretty nice looking Athol 614 and I notice that it just so happens to be located over in Ft. Worth, which I had to make a trip over to today anyway. I reached out to the seller to see if he minded a local pickup and he was nice enough to oblige. While not super rare, it sure is in nice shape and has smooth jaws. Happy to have it in the family.

Nice pickup Mayer, same vise was probably my first vintage vise I bought, probably about 35 years ago. Been a fixture on my bench ever since, has done a ton of work. Gotta love the huge jaw support "tongue" on those Athols!

That repair seems like it would need to be mentioned for 2 grand, but what do I know.

Remove the leadscrew/handle.

The other worry is do you think they are dumb enough to use it as an anvil?

I found my PIA coworkers using a drill press vise and hammer to bend heavy gauge steel sheet. I was NOT pleased.

If it was me I would only take a vise is functional and reasonable quality, but has been abused such that it does not have collector status. So if in the unlikely even my coworkers break it I will not cry too much. And i would remove the leadscrew/handle when I travel.

They would probably just find some round stock as a substitute for the handle and laugh behind your back.---I believe I would acquire a pretty stout Chicom that would handle most of my own projects while knowing that the Jackals, Buzzards, and Hyenas were going to pick it's carcass clean just as soon as I turn my back.

Years back, I had a problem with coworkers using my work vise and leaving it a mess. Pictured below is what I did.
Otherwise, set it up on a temporary mount and lock it away when you're not at work.

I picked up this very clean Parker 974 1/2 this morning. Was excited about the deal, but more excited that it has a lot of original paint. This means it can be the guinea pig for the Simple Green and BLO clean-up method I want to use on its bigger brother, the 978.

I could not bring myself to let the Millscott spend even one night outside!!!
So far it has been a nice summer, lots of sun and no bugs.
The trade off is we're now getting a bunch of smoke from wildfires.
Might have to drive away from it if it gets much worse.

Hers was one of two or three surviving houses on her street! Smoke damage only! ALL the neighboring houses next to her were burned to the ground!

Myself, I look at it like a barrel of whiskey aging, the patina just gets better with time in the elements.
