Some great finds this week.

Dave you **** for that $75 Stihl. Even a beater goes for $200 around here.

CB that's a damn impressive haul!

My much more modest finds from this morning's flea market.

15" SK 1/2" ratchet, CM breaker, swivel, sockets and extensions, a cheap soldering iron for a smoke tester project.
b7b59af121a4a3ce714971655b72d1ba.jpg

The bottom group is all Snap On. Complete 1/4" flex set from 3/16 to 9/16. A 3/8" flex set missing the 7/16 and 3/8 that I all ready have. Hose clamp pliers, cotter key puller and a 1/4" breaker.

$40 for all of the above.

Lastly was an old Stant pressure tester for $4.

Technically not a sale, but a couple of weeks ago, a coworker asked if I wanted a mower that she couldn't get started and that she had already replaced with an electric mower. I said sure. Turns out it was a Honda four blade self propelled unit that I got running in 30 minutes with a few basic tweaks. Sweet! I gave my old mower to my young assistant who just got his first house.

Went to about 10 sales, only one had tools.

Best buy yesterday was this -V- crowfoot set for $8.

Also got a Lisle "Jeepers Creeper" $5, a dremel tool in case $5, CM MM deep socket set ($5), CM drum brake set (unused, $10).

I had a breakfast meeting with some work colleagues this morning and spotted an estate sale near the restaurant, so I stopped by after. The ad pics were mostly household bric-a-brac, but mentioned lots of tools, handyman estate, etc. I sent the ad link to SWMBO, and she tele-shopped while I checked out the minimal tool offerings.

I asked the family if there were any other tools and was told yes, but they had already put out everything of value. After some persistence on my part, they let me look through the "tool room" on the back of the house. They were right--mostly throw away stuff back there.

SWMBO got back to me with her "this if under $x, that if less than $y" items. I bundled and bargained the following for a total of $29:

Fodder for SWMBO's yard art/garden projects:
Resin tortoise sprinkler--brass fittings and very detailed casting
Chicken cooker dish
Blue glass vase

Hand tools:
Millers Falls keyhole saw, not a "Buck Rogers" (no red color) but still cool--call it a "Space Man Spiff" saw
Long-C Craftsman 03963 Duralumin rafter square
Bridgeport Boy Scout hatchett w/ PO name engraved in the handle

After saying my farewells, I got back in the car, but paused before driving away. I had seen an unusual camp stove in the front yard. I only knew it as unusual due to our resident Coleman collector's (OutlawMWS) posts here. After some Ebay searching, I finally found two examples that made me get out of the car and walk back. A 30-second conversation got me both of these for another $15:

Coleman 443 aluminum 3-burner camp stove, brief '61 to '64-ish production run, very good condition
Coleman 501-960 cook kit, in original box, sold from McChord AFB sometime in the '60s, very good condition

Yeah, I left happy!

Yeah, it seems like nearly everyone's Dad who dragged the family out into the woods had one. The green Coleman outdoor devices are ubiquitous, which is why this one caught my eye. I know they made some rare ones in other colors, but had never heard of an aluminum model anything other than pots/pans/utensils. Outlaw could probably put on a clinic of unusual Coleman gear to watch out for at yard sales.

On another topic, I'll miss this honey hole of a sale because I need to replace the water pump on my Silverado...:-(

Wife went to a local garage sale and recognized these two Kennedy boxes from a couple I already have. Got them for $2 each. I might have to keep her around.

Went to a appointment type sale yesterday to get a Delta/Rockwell belt/disc sander. It wasn’t there, she forgot selling it. She was helping the widow clear out a shop, so a fair amount to dig through.

Wow, that is one massive haul and an equally big you ****!

Very nice Dave!!!

Please go to my 'Vintage Hand Trucks' thread, post more pics, and tell us more about it. Is it marked?

Hopefully they’ll find a new location for your flea.
Thanks, Don. I talked to the director of the flea market more this morning and got his phone number so I can get the new location when they find one. It won't be the same though, and I highly doubt it will be directly on my way to work! That's what was so good about this location. Also, I don't know if the retirees are going to want to drag their stuff to the new spot. This was my "Geezer Village" stop, so-called because of the series of Leisure Village retirement complexes between the Garden State Parkway and Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst on Rt 70. :(

All:

Does anyone recognize the braided grip pattern on these dykes I found on Thursday? They are not branded at all. Well-made pliers with a handsome grip. Hard to believe a mfgr put that much effort into the die for a grip and didn't mark the product. Maybe it was famously unique or part of a kit that was marked?

Only two picture-worthy finds for me this weekend. The adjustable wrench at the top is marked

PAT D 6-3-19 UNIVERSAL WRENCH CO
7-22-19 DETROIT-WINDSOR

On one side and

8" UNIVERSAL DROP FORGED STEEL

On the other

The 1/2" female drive ratchet is unmarked other than No. 3202-R. It has a marked oil hole on the face plate. Since it has a reversing lever and a removable drive stud I'm assuming it was offered with a 3/8 drive stud as well?

I posted the adjustable angle wrench a while ago and promised to get back in regards to the markings. Very very faint and did the best I could with chalk and a magnifying glass.

THE ANDERSON
????????? IT WRENCH
???????? 1906
???????????????Co.

Beautiful dykes. Odd nobody signed that piece of artwork.

Did you find those at the same place?! I don't have a quirky adjustable wrench fixation, per se, but I am casually working up to it onesy-twosie at a time, accidentally, as it were, but I know that those are two of the fairly harder-to-find models.

The Universal is 1,305,628, Statham. (The 7-22-19 date refers to Canadian patent CA 191,760.)

The Anderson is 834,242, John Anderson, Oct 3, 1906. Those were made by a few mfgrs, including Anderson Coupling. A Pacific Northwest wrench.

Um, Yes! the unmarried guys will be asking if she has a sister!

Only child so they’re SOL. :lol2:

I usually ignore old pipe wrenches like this but haven’t seen many this short so I picked it up. No names stamped on it aside from the diamond and the 6 forged into it.

Possibly one of these, from Bonney Catalog #18.

SunS, That's actually a monkey wrench not pipe. pipe invariably have teeth to bite into the round pipe so it won't slip and most have some camming action to help (Alligators being the exception.

I knew that, must’ve had a brain fart or something.

I see a bunch of these that are Coes fairly often, and this one was actually with a larger Coes wrench, but they’re significantly different. The action looks about the same as the Bonney mentioned above, but the handle is different.

I would buy the larger ones once in a while when I came across nice examples but I rarely use them and you can’t hardly give them away on eBay so I haven’t bought any lately.

Thanks Lugz. I figured the Universal had a Canadian connection but now I know!

Yes I get most of my weirdos from the same guy, a flea vendor I frequent. He's got a lot of stuff like this. He's hound-dogged a few things I've been looking for so I like to buy a piece or two off him every time I stop by. I've started a "weird sh#t" box that all this stuff lives in.

I was at the flea digging around in the usual bin of worn out and import ratchets, about ready to throw in the towel when I spotted this little ******.

A nice 1/4 Britool England D20. I knew the odds of finding some British ratchets were in my favor, as the sockets and wrenches are always showing up around here.

I think it has 72 teeth. Now let me ask you guys across the pond, do you know if this was a later British made model, or an import with England slapped on? Very nice little ratchet either way.

Ayup couple of hectic weeks here in the UK and you guys in the USA go and score all the WINS!!!!!
Seriously..a FORGE and a huge PRESS in the same week, suckage!

Last week I was out and about and picked up a smattering of items:

DSC_1723.jpg

The intresting items
>Solid Cast single Cobblers last
>5x Terracota Cider goblets
>Smaller branch loppers
>Stove shovel (for picking up the cat mess in my Garden  )
>Shop made stainless steel First Aid box (just an intresting box) :)

And the two proper tools were:
DSC_1729.jpg

FASTFIT WRENCH No.11 & No.12
Weirdly from two different stalls but at the same flea market :headscrat

And one for Outlaw

DSC_1726.jpg

A GENU-WWWINE Chinese paraffin lantern from the Phu Dung era, complete with vintage rust and tissue paper thin instructions. :lol_hitti
.... Guy threw it in with the First Aid box

I also picked up these lumps of Oak Beam at the local Reclamation Yard, apparently from a 200YO church...dunno...but made nice planters!!

And now onto todays finds.....promised myself I'd only buy things that I REALLY NEEDED.....oh well :D

£16 brought the following home :bounce:

DSC_1748.jpg

>"lunchbox" toolbox with integrated latch - No markings - £1
> 3" G-Clamp - RECORD - Made in England - £2
> A "spike" Peen Hammer - Marked T.W. - £1
> Magnifier/Handy-Hold - unmarked - £1 (rigid bar design should be less wobbly than most!)
> Aluminium Catering Tin with lid - "Grundy (Todmington) Ltd" - £2.50
> 2x New Wire Wheels and a dabbing brush - £3
> Screwdriver - £1
> "Around the World in 80 Days" - Jules Verne - £1

...oh and the Japanese pull saws in the back.......£2 each

20190714_151155-COLLAGE.jpg

A Khima and a KYOKUCHO saw, only missing one tooth, but saw wonderfully!

Question -
What is the PROPER name of this pein type of hammer??

20190714_151205-COLLAGE.jpg

And yes the head was mounted upside down and held in with tooth picks :shocking::shocking:
Now remounted correctly onto the same shaft (cut down with my new saws!) with a sand and a splash of wood dye.

Now if you don't mind I'm in the midst of trying to restore this little ******....first part is the scariest as with any restoration...dismantling :headscrat

Neat wrenches Oily. Know anything about the Britool ratchet by chance?

Cheers 3bay,
Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with Britool wrenches.
Growing up in the 80/90's was the time when they were bought out several times and the quality took a nose dive so I was brought up by my dad/uncle/other tool users to "Never touch Britool in the store".

Most of my "good" auto tools are either KING ****, BACHO or Older DRAPER.

Sorry, sure someone will be on shortly to educate us both :)

I bought and posted a pair of those a couple weeks ago. I saw and posted a pair last year, which were a bit too roached to buy. No luck identifying them, but I agree, they’re very nice. If they are USA, and not German, it might be possible to wade through the ridiculous number of design patents, and ID them that way. But design patents are not as well represented on the web as utility patents.

I went back out for a lat posted sale and picked up someone's ford collection - Story was the guy's father gave them to him as a gift (but he wasn't into A's or T's (or possibly even fords) . I paid $10...

Ans the wrenches - the second DBE back is actually FoMoCo in the oval so much later, Most are Circle M, the last on isn't marked or it rust putted off, the second to last is Circle MH.

I forgot to mention, that can's tab has $38.50 marked on it! And everything except the last wrench appear to have BLO on them.

This is the handful of tools I got out of the $50 gray/red Craftsman tool box stack last Sunday. The Craftsman rotary tool works fine and is made in the USA! The vise grips are Petersen USA made. Most of the rest will go into the garage sale bin.

I lost track somewhere, but think I spent $15-20 during a solo trip to Jakes this morning that yielded an extraordinary number of Bonney wrenches. The first batch, with a 6” HD Smith “Perfect Handle” monkey wrench (last patent 26Feb1921) and a pair of Vlchek tappet wrenches was $6. Another vendor supplied the rest, including a. Rompton & Knowles and a Lakeside wrench, for $4.
Ten screwdrivers (two Bonney, one Craftsman, one Millers Falls, one Proto, one Bridgeport/Bell System, one North Bros, three Stanley - one also Bell System) and a Snap-on awl and BP Supreme punch, a “Graffam” compass, a Disston rasp, and a Duro 500 L-bar (pat pending) from various vendors for maybe another $6.
I also got a kick buying a 1st Nat Bank of LEESPORT pouch, after only discovering the tremendous Leesport flea market two weeks ago. Further, I stumbled into an ongoing comparison of the two fleas, to which I leant my opinion. Sane vendor had this C B KAUPP & SONS ashtray, which seems to be formed from solid brass. And a “West Side Battery & Lead Co / Call: Bigelow 3-5375 for pick-up” promotional bottle opener, which I didn't realize pulls out to become a corkscrew. That trio for $1.
And I stopped at a TOO garage sale and got an unopened jar of Sno-Seal for $1.

Nice wrenches. Those are very similar in construction and operation to Cochran and Speednut Corp SPEEDNUT wrenches here in the US. Somewhat of an uncommon neat collectible. You don't 'get out much' here on GJ except for the Garage Sale thread, Oily, but I have a thread on the SPEEDNUT's down on the Vintage Board, and Farmer J., one of your countrymen, and a regular on the Vintage Board pointed out the similarity, and between the two of us, I believe we figured out that the British patent preceded the US patent, setting up the possibility that Mr. Cochran 'appropriated' it.

EDIT: If you're interested in reading further on the SPEEDNUT, link to my GJ thread here.

I bought and posted a pair of those a couple weeks ago.
I missed that post, LS. Well spotted! We always have had similar taste. :) And I am glad to see someone else might have an interest in solving the mystery of the braided (rattan/wicker) pattern pliers.

Late this morning I saw a CL ad for an estate sale with some tools. It was about 45 min away out in the country but the pics stated they were updated today. Looked like there was still some stuff so I decided to make the drive. I figured at worst the tools would be gone but I'd take a nice drive in the country and see an area I hadn't been to previously. Upon arrival I checked the garage at the house first. I started a pile with an articulated arm lamp, Proto retaining ring pliers and some type of gadget that was made in Germany. They had a real nice heavy duty Milwaukee Sawzall that looked like it had hardly been used but was missing the quik-lock power cord. I passed at $20. Asked them to watch my pile while I headed down to the other end of the property where the barns, sheds and another house were located. My first pass thru I built up a nice little pile of goodies - steel milk crate, E.C. Atkins No 1AA (Pat Apl'd For) saw vise, Stanley Bailey No 8 hand plane, P&C 1/4" ratchet & a few sockets, Bonney DOE, 6" Proto adj, metal box for parts? (I have 2 plastic Klein boxes like this), US made Ace tap & die set (almost complete), double pulley of some kind, sledge hammer handle, plastic Coca-Cola crate, metal Posted sign, and a couple of 1/4" x 1-1/2" pieces of scrap steel. This pile set me back $8.

IMG_8911.jpg

Loaded that up but decided maybe I should have another look back thru the 3 sheds (8 separate rooms). The decision to take another look was a good one. My second pile consisted of a Simplex TKO 20 ton 14" railroad jack, (piece of) railroad track anvil, Columbian No 53 Red Arrow 3" vise, 6-1/2" C-clamp, and another saw vise (unbranded). This pile of goodies set me back $5.

IMG_8929.jpg

Headed back to the other house to pay for that pile and see if I'd missed anything. A number of Proto wrenches I passed on at probably $0.25 each. Got enough wrenches already. I didn't see anything I couldn't live without but I did ask if $20 was as low as they could go on the like new Sawzall. The guy who'd quoted me that price pointed to the young guy I'd been dealing with for my other purchases at the sheds. He says I'll do $10. I'll take it! So I paid $13 for the Sawzall, lamp, German gadget and pliers.

I couldn't find a name on the lamp until I got home and then saw it was a Dazor! Super excited to have one. I'd asked the guy what he wanted for it and he said $2. I asked if it worked and he said he doubted it but when he tried it - it worked! Definitely worth $2! The German made "gadget" appears to be a sub-miniature spy camera. Cool! I thought it was maybe some kind of meter, maybe a light meter. Worth the $0.50! All in all I spent $26. That was fun! FWIW, the grandparents had passed away a couple of years ago, The granddaughter and her husband were trying to clear everything out in order to sell the place. Nice folks!

He's still got two barns to clear out. I asked him to contact me if he comes across any more woodworking stuff. Oh, there was a very rusty Columbian 4" vise outside the 2nd shed I looked at. He said they were keeping that. I asked if that was the only vise they'd had (wondering what I might have missed) and he said there was "a big one" and spread his hands at least 2' apart and repeated "it was a BIG one!". Said they gave it to a cousin who farms down the road. He didn't remember the vise maker. :)

That Minox camera is a professional piece of equipment that was very popular with those who were in the intelligence community. They were originally made in Latvia.
