2019 Garage Sale Thread

Road bike to flea market yesterday and weather was about perfect. I got some other stuff but these were the best.

Is that a long roofline over vendors' tables in the way back? I wish more guys would post photos of their flea markets. I have in the past. I always try to imagine what other guys flea markets look like.

...and a home-made 1/4dr Snap-on flex socket with a 5/8 12pt socket welded to it... not a bad job either!

I like to pick up home-made tools whenever they strike my fancy. For example I have a Plomb uni joint with a Plomb 7/8" socket on it, 3/8-inch drive, that I reckon was home-made because Plomb didn't provide a swivel socket with that large of an opening in 3/8-inch drive.

I had a good tool day. Decent estate sale this morning and two boxes I was expecting arrived in the mail. The first is from a friend I went to school with. He wanted me to have what was left of his Dad and Grandpas tools. A partial Wizard 3/8 drive set with a decent decal, little Wizard ignition set, Little Giant tap and die, a few Plomb wrenches, a few Dunlap wrenched and assorted others. The Wizard stuff was undoubtedly purchased at the Western Auto in the tiny town I grew up in.



The other box was from my Dad. He recently took a trip to Idaho and I had jokingly told him not to come back with something Plomb. I was expecting a wrench, got a tool box along with a Long C DBE, a "Cadillac" wrench and a Walden.



This little advertising razor was thrown in with my buddies stuff and is a touch of home. If you got new furniture in my home town, chances are it came from Miles Furniture.

The neighbors, my wife and I got to the only advertised garage sale on Craigslist this morning right when they opened. I asked about the tools they mentioned and the woman said they were already gone. The ad said “no early birds” but I guess that didn’t matter. Since that was a bust we hit a couple thrift shops and found a few tools. The first picture is everything, the second a Powr-Kraft DBE, the third is a Wizard DOE. The first socket picture is some S-K, next is the Thorsen and last is some Craftsman.

Was checking Marketplace this afternoon and saw an ad with some items on a bench which included a vise and what I thought was a rail shaped anvil.

Vise turned out to be a Wilton 9145 Cadet, while the anvil turned out to have a name on side which I think reads "Handy $2-1/2 Anvil".

Cleaned them both up and attached is pics of what they look like now.

Hit the same estate sale as JoCo this morning. I was probably 4 or 5 people behind him. Below are the items I managed to scoop up in his wake.

Crowntop machinist's chest to replace the beater Kennedy I have.




One drawer still had an assortment of sockets that ran from Chinesium to Snap On.


What I thought was a set of all =V= 1/2" deeps but several were V or G series. Pliers range from CM, Diamalloy, Kraeuter, and Meister from Germany. Unmarked dollies and a Master Mechanic 8oz BP. About $15 for all.


Found a box of stuff at what I first thought was a holding table for two bucks.


Mostly garage sale fodder, but at bottom center is the 1/4" =V= tommy bar that JoCo missed.

Left the ES and went to pick up an online auction item I won the other night. Probably overpaid, but I find it hard to pass up vintage 60's - 70's automotive gear.

Got a phone call Monday to look at the estate of a mechanic & drove up with the minivan, some tubs & cash.
Came home with 4 tubs full, less cash, & the agreement to return the next day with my truck to take home the 2 old Snap-on boxes.
Just as I was leaving, I got a lead on a young man that was dumping his 1 year old tools, so I made the deal based on his photos & went to his place first.
(when it rains it pours right?)
$500.00 for his tub of Snap-on stuff.
I really like the looks of the little 1/2 Blue-Point impact (size compared to my MG725)
Will later have time to unload the 2 boxes & all the other stuff that I dug out of the man's basement that still is in the bed of the truck.
For now here is the $500. Snap-on lot:

Nice haul! I just had to comment cause I got the same battery charger you just picked up. I'm pretty sure I abused mine to where it shouldn't work but yet it still does it's job.

It is! Decent size flea market.

It does look fairly big. I have three in my area, all are very large (200, 300+ and 500+ tables, distributed in columns and rows), but none are covered. I have a friend who lives in Tennessee and I am always jealous of his for the same reason - it's in an L-shape and it's entirely covered, so no rain-outs! I also like your nice, clean, grassy parking area.

Hit an estate sale today. The husband and wife had been living on their place for 70 years. She passed recently at 100. I picked up the Disston D-23 hand saw, Stanley No 3 Type 16 hand plane (1933-1941), Stanley 9-1/4 block plane, Singer sewing machine oil and the Lion battery operated pencil sharpener. I didn't have a 9-1/4 so it was cool to come across one. Also, my first Disston hand saw. Don't know how old it is or how good or bad.

Scored good at a tag sale at a closed golf course. Mastercool crimper complete. Missed some really good stuff. I think I'm going to go back tomorrow see if some goodies I left behind are still there.

Hit 1 sale today , got there about 2 hours after it opened and intermixed with junque tools was a few gems.Proto ratchet,Clallenger 1/2Dr ratchet, Stevens-Walden box, Craftsman Long C,BE socket set, Wardsmaster set,Stanley 12ft tape and SnapOn driver. Will do some evaporust soaking very soon.

My evaporust will be busy too because quite a few of my finds were rusty.
I went to two garage sales in S Lake Tahoe today. There were only three worthwhile tools at the first sale but the second sale netted quite a few interesting finds. The first picture is everything, the second is Thorsen followed by Vlchek. Craftsman is next followed by S-K. The last shot is a 3/8” drive Williams Superratchet and an early Walden 1/2” drive non-reversing ratchet.

Ok, glad that job is finished.
The old KR box was a piece of cake to unload, but the KRA box was I swear, as heavy as some KRL boxes I've pushed around, (or I'm gettin older)
Loading that sucka up I had 3 guys helping me shove it up the ramp, but here at my place it was just me & gravity.
I was able to buy the 2 boxes for $450.
And the seller found some more Snap-on that i was able to bring home for an extra $100.
All in all a pretty good week.

Hit an estate sale today. The husband and wife had been living on their place for 70 years. She passed recently at 100. I picked up the Disston D-23 hand saw, my first Disston hand saw. Don't know how old it is or how good or bad.

Congratulations on the D-23, an excellent user. The fact that you can identify it by the etch indicates its good condition. A good number of the saws I have found clearly spent their retirement on the floor of a damp basement, followed by innumerable weeks lying in wet grass.
Here’s a dissertation on the D-23 family of saws.
Dating the saw will come down to the medallion and the wood species of the handle.

After watching and attending estate sales in my area for literally years without finding a single Craftsman RHFT ratchet in any drive size or configuration, I hit the jackpot today. Couldn’t believe what I saw in one of the pre-sale pics (attached). There were two 1/2” drive RHFT flex heads. ($10 each), two 1/2” drive RHFT regular ratchets ($8 each) one 3/8” drive RHFT flex head ($5), and one 3/8” drive RHFT regular ratchet ($4). Got to the sale an hour before they handed out the early bird numbers and even then there was a line of people waiting. Ended up with number 14 spot to get in. When they opened the door at 8:30 I was in the “first wave” of numbers allowed in. I headed straight for the garage. Quickly scooped up all six of the RHFT ratchets, and four pairs of Petersen Vise Grips (I’ve learned the hard way to scoop first and examine things only after they are in your shopping bag). The other “tool hounds” were right on my heels, but I had about a 15 second head start on them which was all I needed to clean up. Headed home very happy a few minutes later.

Picked up a small load at an estate sale today for $20. Included Snap On wrench and gasket scraper, Craftsman bit and driver set and masonry bits, Walden double socket wrench, Plomb screwdriver, 5 machinist hammer heads and a couple of Crescent wrenches.

Second stop was the Habitat ReStore for 65 pounds of new hardware at $1.50 a pound. It's mainly a mix of 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 bolts.

Today's sale was put on by an older gentleman who is trying to clear out his accumulation of tools and related stuff. Not much out on the tables today but I could see his garage was still packe. He said he'll be having more sales in the near future, so I'll need to keep an eye on the Craigslist ads.

A near mint condition Fastenal cabinet with sliding shelves.

An unusual stainless steel rack with rows of spring clips. I don't know what it was originally used for, but I stuck a bunch of screwdrivers in it when I got home. It has holes in the back where it can be mounted on a wall.

A nice clean Machinery's Handbook from 1971. This was only $1.50 which I thought was a steal.

JV, I've turned two of those busted hatchet heads into tent stake driver/pullers

On one I welded two VERY thick washers cut into a "C" Claw and its great for pulling the stakes (I use 12" nail spikes) and the other got a couple of ends off a no-name DOE for the pulling claws.

Found a few things today.

For my kids a 50cc Yamaha that didnt run for $125. Had it running in about 15 minutes. Kids are all smiling ear to ear.

There's some history in that box, and some quality tools - I see what looks like a Starrett protractor head in the bottom drawer; I just picked up one of those myself recently, you can still get replacement parts for them from Starrett if needed.

When I got home the first thing I checked was if a Harbor Freight parts case would fit on the shelves, but they're just a little bit too big. I'll still be able to put it to good use for storing something. Another thought is it wouldn't be too hard to put some fronts on the shelves to turn them into drawers.

Decent day for not expecting much. A single street sale turned out to be a multiple street sale sponsored by a real estate co. That more than made up for the two "no shows"


First stop was interesting as they had the tripod thing I believe is a tripod base for a drummers seat? I may cobble up a seat for camping/Fishing...

VERY mixed bag at this stop: brass Deer, HUGE Wiss Pinking shears, Another tiny camera tripod (I discovered after the pic the legs extend X3), Fly reel, A DOE, and a driver,

Another stop, $5 for a 2HP Brigs and a hitch for the T-bird, (slightly more extension which I need for the bumper to clear...)

A Pair of small antique fans, and a shop made cast aluminum anvil, (he told me he made it in shop class!) A buck for the anvil and 5 for both fans!

A craftsman Vise (3-1/2 Made in Japan), A plane, 2 C clamps (wing is Willians, the other Adjustable) for $5

And this one was one of the longer stops as they had to get "poppy" to show tools in the shed. - well the tools were not for sale, and he spent non of time showing me his "Knife Collection" (mostly rusted to uselessness, half not for Sale, - -Long story shot he wound up giving me the knife an grips free. (the old guy was clearly a burnt out stoner, and may had been high at the time...)

Yes, the knife tip is busted off, I had hoped to reuse the stag grip as material but its too short for what I wanted...

I went out later for a late posted Estate sale, and picked up theses Impacts, ( only 2 are the same brand but all are good brands... ) and the box.

Also there was a fishing pole I liked the action on. (forgot to take a pic...)

It could be for a seat, but I think it's more likely the base for a snare drum stand or cymbal stand.
