My 30x50 Steel Building

Hey guys, after a long wait, my 30x50 steel barn went up today. The trim around the entry door needs to be done, and I’m waiting on that door along with both garage doors. I went with 12x10 insulated commercial doors with 3 rectangle windows in each. I’ll try and update along the way, but here’s how she sits right now.

TBD. I really wanted to spray foam it, then you read about some of the issues with premature rust. Then you talk to some big name installers out by me (I know, it’s how they make a living), but they are convincing when they say it’s all in how it’s installed, how it’s sprayed, thickness, climate at the time of install etc.

I like it, and have some questions for you. Being located in Michigan, what are the snow and wind load specifications on that steel structure? Did the building material come in the form of a kit for DIY or sub-contracted erection? Also, what's the brand name of the product, and were you able to source it locally, or did it have to be trucked in from out of state?

I’d have to dig up the specs for you. It’s been a long process. I do remember that it exceeded the county’s requirements. The inspector I talked to said it was more than sufficient. The building was ordered through Choice Metal Buildings, and it turns out that their supplier is Carolina Carports. It was brought in from out of state. I didn’t find that out until it was too late, and I had heard a ton of negatives about Carolina Carports. They actually sent a crew within a couple weeks and had it installed in a day. The crew was great, friendly and fast. I opted out of their doors as I wanted true insulated over head doors and a good quality entry door. So far, I’m pleased with the building.

They did the whole building in two days----with three overhead doors and factory insulation. The building is dead on level, every screw is perfect....I literally could not find a flaw in the install. I think you will be really happy with your building.

That’s awesome to hear! I’m glad you’re happy with yours. I looked up reviews prior to install and began to panic a little haha. I’m smart enough to know that only the negative experiences get reviewed, there just seemed to be a ton of them. So far, I couldn’t be happier. Extremely clean install. I didn’t opt for their insulation as id like something better suited for Michigan winters. Do you happen to have any pics of your electrical or lighting by chance, if you did any.

hey if they're so confident surely their warranty against that problem is of similar length and coverage to what they are saying.

I have a 30x60 that was put up and I finished it myself. Without major expense 3in fiberglass batts seem to be the best fit for these buildings in my opinion. They can be bought in custom widths to fit between the studs. The 3in is not ideal but it made my shop workable year round in California's central valley ( 105plus in the summer and low 30s in the winter)

Looks good man! Mind me asking what the insulation ran ya? I have a local company that will spray 1.5” closed cell on the wall and ceiling for $3,800. I love the tin look to finish it, I just want to be able to hang things on the wall.

I'm just about to start electrical and lighting. I had a huge delay due to problems with the "top cap" of my concrete floor. It was poured during a huge rain storm and power-troweled way too long. This left it in a dusting condition. I had to have it ground, hardened and coated.....took forever.

Insulation was about 2200 bucks, plus wood and tin. 3800 is way cheaper then what I was quoted in my area. On quote for 2in closed cell was 8500, another was 12k. For 3800 I dont think I would have put up the fiberglass

I did the tin to protect the insulation on th bottom 6ft and .75 osb behind it to give me the ability to mount electrical and stuff anywhere I wanted. My original plan was to use flat 4x8 galvanized sheets but they had this siding on clearance are the supply house and less than half the cost I couldnt pass it up. I did use the flat sheets in the " grinding room " under the mezzanine and it is nice not having to work around the ribs.
