Decent small haul from the flea market this morning.

attachment.php

From left to right, top to bottom...

- Keen Kutter can opener

- Unusual, unmarked "-D-I-" socket with a 15/16" service opening marked "A191314" and "FOR GROUSER". (That's an Ordnance Dept drawing/stock number and I am guessing the "Grouser" refers to removable cleats on tracked vehicles.)

- Unmarked offset screwdriver

- Fifteen (15) pcs of a Plomb-made Craftsman Circle-U set.

- DASCO hex drive socket set

Also, I hate to make three posts in a row... but this sign at a church about 3 miles from my flea market caught my eye this morning, and captured my attention enough to make me turn around, go back, and snap this photo.

It's the strangest danged thing I have ever read on a church sign and begs a lot of questions!

I have never seen a dog for sale at a flea market, first of all, and I can't even imagine that. While there are some desperate, wrong-headed people in the world, I would immediately suspect it was not theirs, in which case, and despite the advice and best intentions of the church pastor, it might actually be a good thing to go ahead and buy it! That way you are either saving a dog that someone else clearly doesn't want, or recovering a dog that wasn't theirs.

You can see how this occupied my mind and might continue to do so throughout the day.

Weird sign. Right?! Something had to prompt it and I am wondering if it happened at my flea market.

Not just track area, but traction, in general, and not just the military, Pete, but yes, as I already mentioned in my post. They come in a variety of designs - cleats, studs, etc, some that are part of the track, and some that are removable. I am guessing this was for installing and removing them. Maybe adjusting them. It'll be fun to try to "track" down. :)

Lugz,

I've seen puppies, kittens, bunnies, and even a pony for sale at a flea market. It might be more of a rural thing.

All my fleas are rural and this one in particular is a farmer's market surrounded by farms a mile from the Burlington County Fairgrounds. It's as rural as it gets. I think it might be illegal to sell live animals at fleas here in NJ, because now that you mention kittens and bunnies etc, I have never seen any animal for sale.

the local fleas here always have "breeders" selling dogs (puppy's)

Is Thermocure cheaper? Is that where you're going with this? If so, I like it. Let us know what you find out.

By volume, Thermocure is about four times more expensive than Evaporust. But the label says a quart treats a three-gallon radiator. So maybe it’s concentrated and you add distilled water? If it really yields three gallons, it would be about $8 per gallon (figuring $1 per gal of distilled water).
As far as the injunction against buying a dog at a flea market, I think it’s just a play on the word “flea” (if you buy the dog, you’ll bring fleas into your home), so the warning is a metaphor for staying clear of people and places likely to lead you sin.
Church signs often use humor and non-sequiturs to catch attention and elicit interest, same as billboards. I recall one that said “CH RCH - what’s missing?”

Today, I nearly recycled a curbside find, which had been taking up floor space in my cellar. It seemed to me to be a high school shop project, in the form of a plant stand, but had a serious flaw. The four legs were straight, vertical steel rods welded onto two steel hoops. Since this placed the feet inside the diameter of the top, it was extremely unstable. Being steel, and having four legs, it would hop and walk when bumped, if it didn’t directly tip over.
I was considering testing the welds with a hammer before putting it in my vise to cut the rods free for easier salvage, when I suddenly thought, why not just bend them out to give it a wider stance? Sure enough, two 20° dogleg bends below the lower hoop did the trick.
Now I’ve scraped and sanded it as a prelude to paint.
Edit/Update: Hah! Change of plan. Paint would make it look like it came from a big box store. I’ll do a BLO rub. And call it a day.

Almost - it's "CH CH - What's missing? U R."

IF it puzzles you, read it aloud.

I believe this sign was set as pun.

Double entendre. A dog may have fleas, people buy things at a flea market, associative.

Not much at the local flea market. I passed on some heavily rusted Hazet combo wrenches and knipex pliers. I did pick up this Rahsol vice grips and like new Heyco 3/8" universal swivel for $5.

Lugz, Nice finds!
It seems to me that this thread has recently been missing any interesting wartime Jeep gas cans. I’m going to correct that today. Since we are spending a few days in the Bay Area, we hit an estate sale in Alamo, CA this morning. The previous owner of the items was obviously a machinist with all the equipment to match. Here are some of our finds. The first picture is the entire haul, the second one is the Craftsman stuff. My wife spotted the Wartime Machinery’s Handbook. The Jeep gas can is my first Monarch brand from 1943. More to follow.

We found a Snap-on 3/8 drive torque wrench. A WF Plomb 3/8” speeder, a Plomb carbon scraper and a Proto ratchet followed by some Powr-Kraft. I was really happy to find two GMTK correct Barcalo Buffalo wrenches. The last shot is a variety of tools, mostly found for others.

Nice circle U. They seem to be the hardest to find out of the BE, H, and U sets.

First partial set of Circle U I have ever run into in the wild, Roy. I've found a socket here and there, and I think I might have another short extension squirreled away, but that's it. I have never held a Circle U ratchet. The funny thing is none of it was together. The speeder (with the homemade rubber grip on the swing ) was in one box, the ratchet in another, and the extensions and sockets in a third and all the boxes were overstuffed with all kinds of drive tools and brands. Same vendor, different boxes. It was like assembling the parts for a T rex in a dinosaur graveyard. "If you're looking for Snap-on, it's up here," he said as I was pawing, indicating a few bins sitting next to him on the tailgate of his truck. "I already pulled all that and the MAC out." I knew right then that he didn't know what the Craftsman was and I was going to get a deal.

Hey, folks, your host has been AWOL due to a Boy Scout high adventure trip--bicycling from Pittsburg to DC via rail trail and C&O Canal. It was a great adventure with a great group of boys. I'm back now. No prospects for the weekend, but I shook hands with a seller on a '57 T-bird for SWMBO last night. The family just needs to come up with the title. Pics to follow if the deal goes through.

Congrats BB, on the T-bird and the trip! My son and I did a section with our troop almost 12 years ago. Highly recommended. We had our support van leapfrogging ahead of us to lay gear out and get dinner started. So nice when you've been peddling your *** off all day. Here's the route we took.

Nicely done, Boofer. We did the whole route in 6 days, so Frostburg to Hancock was one long day for us. We also did the trip with no chase vehicle, so we had to MacGyver several repairs on the side of the trail. One kid road over 200 miles with a pair of Vice Grips holding one side of his rack on his bike frame! Those very Vice Grips were found at a sale by me, and so were previously posted somewhere on a prior year GJGS thread. :)

Just want to give kudos for the Boy Scout trip. My dad died when I was 8 & scouts gave me a chance to hang with guys & the scout leaders were a good influence. My mom taught me to cook, but, ax handling was outside her purview.
57 T-bird sounds fun.

It was a "Just because" kind of day for me at my early birds.

My first flea market stop included this Lyon cabinet and the tools on top. Several different vendors. It has shelves, not drawers, it's not large, and the opening and closing mechanism is a little wonky. Why? Because it's OD green, it's a Lyon, and you can never have enough cabinets.

attachment.php

At my second flea market, I spotted this late 1960's Simonsen military cantilevered box.

attachment.php

I don't normally collect them that late. I have a WWII model. But it was in excellent condition, had a real nice patina, and I wanted it real bad, but the guy wouldn’t come down from $65. It was his dad's. He was in the Navy and retired from Lakehurst in the 70's. He thought it was WWII, so I gave him the whole spiel on the embossed decal and the MIL-SPEC marking etc to establish my bona fides.

attachment.php

I told him that $65 would be high even for WWII, but he wouldn’t budge. Fortunately, while relatively empty, it had some really good things inside, which I cajoled him into selling loose without me buying the box.

attachment.php

Here are some close-ups and a total inventory (top to bottom, left to right) from both stops together...

attachment.php

- I can’t read the markings on the rust-crusted deep sockets but they are unmistakably either NB or NB-made Craftsman BE or (H). Why? Because deep sockets are always hard to come by.

- Four (4) leather punches - #6, 8, 10, and 12 - Wm Johnson, Newark, NJ

- Phillips LIC 2 (IRWIN, Apex) PAT 2046837 (wartime) # POINT-S

- ZIM Valve Grinder in original box with all parts. Why? Just because it deserves a good home with my other grinder/lappers.

attachment.php

- Walden-Worcester 7264 9/32-inch drive flex extension, cad, never used, with "U.S." stamp (wartime!)

- Walden-Worcester 7276 9/32-inch drive uni joint, cad, never used, with "U.S." stamp (wartime!)

- Williams M-115 9/32-inch drive long extension, cad (wartime!)

- Unbranded 9/32-inch drive wingnut socket that looks an awful lot like the JO Mfg 9/32-inch drive wingnut sockets I already have (wartime!)

- Plomb 4844 SIZE 1 (9/32") 9/32-inch drive screwdriver bit (wartime!)

- Plomb 4845 SIZE 2 (3/16") 9/32-inch drive screwdriver bit (wartime!)

- The cool-*** knobby stubby midget spinner is a Deco? 14B8809

- Bonney RF-22 1/4-inch drive midget reefer rat with Bonney RF-73 packing gland nut socket attached

- Bemis & Call 6 IN No 80 adjustable crescent type wrench

- Champion DeArment Channellock No. 426 water pump pliers (I don’t this shorty)

- Welsh goggles in original box (Because I have a thing for shop eyewear)

- Stevens-Walden Inc toolbox type shorty ball-pein hammer

- APCO-Mossberg 41-B-309-1/2 long extension (wartime GMTK!)

I did that ride the fall of 2016. Totally loved it. I will do it again. I started in DC and finished in Pittsburgh. Did it solo and met my wife in Pittsburgh.

Estate sale about an hour away just into NJ this morning. Managed to score this little pile of tools for a good price. I especially like the Deep Purple Snap-on flat head screwdriver. One Snap-on 3/8dr 5/16 6pt Deep socket.... who has just one Snap-on socket?? Here they are after an initial Clean-Up.

That is awesome.

I notice that Boofer went the opposite direction. Is it like the Appalachian Trail, with through hikers endlessly discussing/arguing about which way is best/easiest etc?

I did that ride the fall of 2016. Totally loved it. I will do it again. I started in DC and finished in Pittsburgh. Did it solo and met my wife in Pittsburgh.
Ha! BB's troop went downhill. We went uphill.
Yeah, to each his own. Here's the overall elevation map. In either direction, you have to cross the Eastern Continental Divide, so you've got to go up before you go down.

Just want to give kudos for the Boy Scout trip. My dad died when I was 8 & scouts gave me a chance to hang with guys & the scout leaders were a good influence. My mom taught me to cook, but, ax handling was outside her purview.
57 T-bird sounds fun.

Hear, hear! I thinking Scouting is great for producing good citizens, which is why I still volunteer with my son's troop after he aged out in 2017.

BTW, the family ordered a replacement title for the T-bird, so I'll post when I pick it up. Technically, it qualifies for this thread because it was in a garage when it was on sale!

Here are some pics. It's a driver, not a museum piece. It'll need some maintenance work, some minor rust repair, and a paint polish but it is not a project car. Hopefully, SWMBO can tolerate the manual steering and brakes.b702da36e89e379284ce288bbefb6bd5.jpg8fc600a71ec85c2f705c349341e3a6d8.jpg62c0ce534b8d19baf1f7810291958db2.jpg039552af557258fde21a31f8e5479a83.jpg

Nice ride, Blue Bomber!
Since I didn’t hear any complaints about yesterday’s 1943 Jeep can, by pure coincidence I found another at a Martinez, CA estate sale today. The first picture is today’s haul, the second is a metric ton of Craftsman. The Thorsen is next followed by a grind off P&C pebble puller. The last three are my new Bennett 1943 Jeep gas can.

A few people have PM'd or emailed me saying my photos weren't showing up in post #4372 from this morning. LS said the same thing this morning, soon after I posted, then deleted his post, so I thought the problem went away. Sorry about that. Not sure what happened.

Here are a few pics. You can scroll up to #4732 for the list. And I posted a lot more photos after clean-up on various threads. On vintage board, see Plomb, ZIM, Bemis & Call, Stevens Walden, Vintage Safety Glasses, and Metal Cabinets.
