Saved to photos. I find old belt driven shops fascinating.

I designed and fabricated a custom cover for my outdoor Prentiss 56 vise and stand. Feel free to copy the design if you wish. I can supply measured drawings too.

I am thinking a used plastic barrel off CL should fit perfect. They are about $10.00 here.

Hmmm, in all seriousness that WOULD look a lot better than the storage bucket. I wonder in my case if the base of the barrel would fit over the 18 wheeler wheel?

Necessity is the mother of invention. The label ratted you out btw.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your monarchs are not complete.

They are both missing the crack along the top back end of the slide...

Ahhhh, just hold on one second, the 214 does have a “hairline” crack about 1 1/2” long on the top/middle/back of the slide

It’s only cosmetic it’s so small. I was originally concerned but after reading it’s very common and usually doesn’t affect functionality I’m ok with it.

Still though, you are correct. I do have one that is incomplete.

Oh well 1 outta 2 ain’t bad

ken, like the idea; lightweight, easy to install and remove, replacements are easy to find and can serve other purposes as needed!

Followed up on a rumor of an old red vise in a garage out in the country and came home with a new addition to the spreadsheet!

It's a Fulton 13, 6in jaws, 9 5/16 opening and 130lbs. It looks like a quick cleaning is all she needs and it will be ready to go. Jaws are in real good shape and it spins with a finger.

Stopped at an estate sale this AM on the way to work.

Noticed a “rare antique vise” stashed in the corner, too rich for my blood.

Swung back by on the way home tonight.

Vise was still there, now 50% off.

So, another Prentiss Monarch followed me home tonight. This one makes 3 in 2 days, I really should slow down.

This one a #217 fixed base 4 1/2” jaw, however, it’s not “perfect” the slide isn’t cracked on this one

I found a decent Wilton C1 today for half price. It has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 70 lbs. It’s been well used so it’s going to take some time to get it up to speed.606ff0520566ba29e10abf611ba4ed51.jpg

Mslund1, Nice pickup on the two Monarch's, both did not have pic:s for the spreadsheet. Does the 401 have replaceable jaws? I like the 401. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the 401 has replaceable jaws.

I haven’t run across a prentiss/monarch this style myself. Here’s a few more pics of it for you.

I had a busy July and was not able to keep up with you guys and the vises shown, was gone most of the month. I also have picked up several vises my self but like to show them when I finish restoring them. Right now I am head over heals in building jaws. I want to share some pics from my run through New Mexico. I wanted to visit the Railroad Museum in Albuquerque but they were closed on Sunday, really disappointing to learn that. That great picture of the Engines raised up and all those Holland 18 on the Railroad stands was in Albuquerque.
On my way home I stopped in Durango Colorado and they had a smaller museum and a working rail car shop where the guys work on big stuff, I told them I work on the big vises and own a machine shop and could I visit there machine and working shop but they did not believe me and did not oblige. I took some pictures through the open windows since there is no air conditioning in shops like that. The rail cars can roll right into the shops to be worked on. I looked for big vises but all they had was Wilton's, some C3's some smaller. I guess the big vises were used up by then. Here is a few pic's.

Nice pics, I’d like to be a fly on the wall in that shop for about a week or so.

Too bad Kevin. If you ever come to CA I will gladly host you at the CA State RR Meusem ... also a (limited) working railyard with roundhouse. Has one of the golden spikes from the trans RR. And it's open on Sundays ;)

I feel bad for those Durango ding dongs, they probably would've learned just as much as you or more.

Glad you got some time away and can't wait to see your new acquisitions!

The vise is reasonably good shape but the top has seen a lot of action. It’s a good restoration candidate.

Smitty, I did a Wilton 5oo a while back that I bought from a weld shop auction, beat to hell. With a little time and equipment even one like this can be brought back to shape.

Thanks Jeff, I'll look forward to visiting you in California after I retire. Then we can visit the Museum.

Got her all done and assembled before heading to work tonight. I had measured slop in the screw before disassembly and ordered a shim. Once I dissassembled I realized the set screw was out of place and had grooved the rod. The shim was far too thick that I ordered, but on reassembly it had very little slop. Lots of anti-seize, luckily I bought the big can years ago.

I’m not sure restoration is the right word, is seems more like a resurrection. I’m impressed.
