I have gobs of those stickers to give away free with a self stamped envelope. I had the vinyl stickers made for the 125 and under York vises. My address is on my website. I also have drawings for the jaws and swivel clamps if anyone wants to make their own. Honza you have been collecting some nice Yorks.

jmhinkle:
You are looking at a TASKMASTER vise
They were knockoffs of the Wilton Cadet and made in India

I have one in my collection. I took it apart for paint removal and cleaning. In my opinion, it’s a pretty good vise. The castings were solid and not full of bondo like a lot of imports. The machined surfaces were well done.
I think they were made back in the ‘80s
Buy it if you’re looking for a good user.

Thank You for the info! I don't need it, especially at 2 hours away. I was just looking for some older vises that I might find a deal on. Thought it resembled a Wilton, but the picture was too rough to tell the specifics.

Found an Eire Tool Works Empire 25 vise among my grandfather's vast collection of rusted tools he never found a use for. I'm trying to refurbish it enough for basic use till I can get one in better condition. My biggest problem is I don't know how to take it apart. I tried unscrewing it several times, but it just binds at the end. What should I do?

hi tiailds; the Erie 25's have a release/nut combo on the bottom, right behind the edge stop. Wind out the slide, turn the vise over, loosen the collar and slide the screw out. push the release/nut around a bit with your finger till it drops out. you can then take the slide out. PM me if you need any more help.

Picked up this Reed 104-1/2 a few months ago for cheap and finally got around to cleaning it up. Unfortunately, my gold lettering went to hell, the pen just oozed paint! Oh well.
The handle was so full of bends I had to cut one of the balls off then straightened it out - more or less - on my press. Made a new ball on my lathe then welded it on. Picture was before ball attach!
It's in surprisingly good shape once a half dozen coats of paint were removed. The jaws are very nice.
It's currently my garage user but that may change this weekend. My bench is full of vise holes!

Ken the Reed 104 1/2 looks good and is nice choice for a daily user! Had the same problem with a pen and ended up just painting over it lol. Thanks for the suggestion on making a shoulder bolt, unfortunately don't have the tools for that type of job.

No need to make it like OEM, use a std bolt with the correct thread with a flanged bushing, or a std bolt with a sleeve and washer.

Despite the 110° it climbed to in my garage today, I got some work in on my newest vise acquisition, a Craftsman 5195.

A couple days in the Simple Green (I don't need a Crock Pot to heat mine) and an hour or so wire wheelin gets me here.

I feel like this vise needs to be painted and of course I'm indecisive on what color.

That is one nice looking vise! Well 110° is no match for labor of love . Great job so far!

As for the color have you visited the thread

Craftsman 5198. Who made these awesome vises!!

There are many examples of different color schemes there. You might find something there that tickles your fancy.

Well it’s official, my mailman hates me. These two 25 lb Prentiss vises just arrived on the same day. The little Bull Dog no. 90 is pretty clean.
I’m finally getting even for all of those bills he’s brought me over the years.

Smitty
Nice score as usual

And mailman thought he has to only worry about your dogs, little he knew what else is in store for him :lol_hitti

Great job despite the oozing pen. And perfect size for a daily user

Surprised none of you guys have stepped up and bought this very impressive vise....https://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-DU...:lH0AAOSwv4tdSML4:sc:USPSPriority!02330!US!-1

If it was a local pickup, I would be all over it :lol_hitti

it does say in the description "I have taken good close pictures to show condition." I would say the condition is very good

Edit
Well after enlarging the first picture, well the goods look old and hanging, so I am not longer sure about being all over it.

That 5198 is extremely rare, very well built, but that is just stoopid $$

(Did Oldie win the lottery? )

The auction ended yesterday at $2025. Does anyone actually believe that either of the 2 bidders will make the payment for the vise? Keep in mind that with only 2 bidders, if the high bidder bails out the price reverts to the highest price bid BEFORE him. So the price could revert to $450.

That’s a likely scenario. Although the seller could also “lose” the vise and thereby not be obligated to sell to the $450 bidder.

Thanks gman! I've followed and contributed a bit in that thread in the past. It's probably all the fine restored examples in that thread that contribute to my inability to nail down a color scheme!

Would anyone with a Reed 202 or 202 1/2 have some pics they could post? I'd be especially grateful if there was anything else in the pic for size reference.

Also interested if anyone has pics of an Athol 202 1/2.

Thanks in advance!

Well, have a Reed 302-1/2 shown here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6113546&highlight=Reed#post6113546 if it's any help. As fate would have it, there's a 2-1/2" Athol in the same post. Think I have a couple of the Athols, and still have the Reed if I can help.

Calling smitty. Seller says he thinks the jaws are 8in wide which means probably 7in. He’s asking $250. What size do you you fellows think it is. 184544599428dffbdc1fa66661fd4138.jpg

That’s what I was thinking so I had the seller take a picture of the back of the slide and it’s a 6in.

Sorry, just got here. I see you already solved the puzzle. The slide seems sound, the brow over the meatball is intact and the swivel jaw looks manageable. If that were in my area I’d be all over it. I’d offer him $200 and go from there.

The handle has an issue but it looks like it could be easily solved. It looks to be in good condition for a 110 year old vise.

If you do get that Prentiss 22 you can rest easy if there is anything wrong with the nut or screw. I have a screw/handle assembly and nut in pretty decent shape. Handle is even straight and ball ends are original. IIRC, one of the ball ends is just a little loose.

No charge, just pay shipping! 839642080bc000e855a4ac769e0d6405.jpgad5dadb32fae0858d5304d0e7521237e.jpg

A Prentiss 22 for $250, that is one I would be all over if no cracks or welds. Almost 170lbs. What is Smitty's opinion? $200 would be a deal.
$250 is pretty cheap assuming the backside checks out. I could see it selling for twice that on eBay. I’d offer him $200 and meet in the middle at $225. These don’t come up very often in this condition. I’d probably pay as high as $350 for this vise, maybe more.

I found a vise that isn’t in the spreadsheet. As a matter of fact I can’t even find a photo of one. I’ll post pics in the next day or so. Hint, it weighs 176 lbs.

I feel the same as you, these old vises are a great tool, just like the tools in anyone's toolbox. I have tools that I bought for over 3k. 250 bucks for a 6" vise is pretty cheap. Thanks for the help on the Spreadsheet, much appreciated.

LOL

It’s had a hard life but it’s still interesting to see. I’ll post up tomorrow.

Today is tomorrow! You are killing us with the suspense! In fact poor VA has had two ER visits for super high heart rate since your first post about this mysterious vise :lol_hitti

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. This is a Fulton vise no. 58, it has 6” jaws and weighs in at 176 lbs. The vise is 27” long and 13 1/2” high.773e5ff01e78ba6724f5ccb5dca1f758.jpgfc7806f8716a688839bed8729f87a174.jpg7b2f1dfa0e7d2565e0216c4d75cf5e32.jpg93efd49520362afc2f3d62b1b0837292.jpg
