Outlaw, Old, Smitty, you fellows need your own talk show.---Now there's one I would watch.
As a side note, I think all other talk shows should be used to extract info at Gitmo instead of waterboarding.---Expose them to 48 hours of nothing but the View and they will spill their guts.

Picked this Reed made Craftsman 3 1/2" vise last weekend and got motivated to clean it up and give it a new coat of paint.
Before:

Now I need to make a stand for it as I'm out of benches for vises.

Can anyone PLEASE help me find a can or two of Hammerite light blue? I can only find one place with it listed online (as possibly in stock) and they want like $38 shipped for one can! Everyone is out of stock with no restock ETA. Thanks for any help.

There is a very simple solution to your space quandary! No need to clutter your work benches with vises, rather in addition to vises, you have to start collecting vise stands! Problem solved

Menards muct be doing something right! When I was looking for verde green, that was the only store (including online) that had the cans at regular price. Locally all the other big store did not have it. And online like Razor mentioned they were asking crazy money for a spray can scratchiness

Boy do I appreciate you chiming in, but I've already checked Menards and I cant find it. That part number you just gave me doesn't seem to pull up anything either.
I'm getting down to the wire here, to finish a Wilton for a customer and I'm running out of time FAST. I was totally unaware the Hammerite light blue would be a problem to find.

I got two cans of Hammerite online somewhere but I don't remember where? The verde green I picked up at Menards in Ohio while on vacation. I wish I could help more.

This paint is very difficult to find. I found mine through a automotive paint store. I paid $10.50 per can and bought quite a bit. I can flat rate you a can to get you out of a jam.

Sadly, that's a negative on the Rustoleum 712 Light Blue. I've got a few cans of that, and it looks absolutely nothing like the color shown, nor does it have any blue in it at all (appearance wise)
It looks silverish and not even close to what a Wilton paint should look like. I tried my best to like that 7212, but it just wont work. I appreciate you asking.

Was out on Thurs doing garage sales, when ran into a buddy who occasionally picks up vises for me.
Said he came across a Jacobson vise and in my mind, was wondering if it might be the friction vise similar to the versa vise/parrot vise.
Went over to look at it at his house and saw it was a 5-1/4 Jacobson fixed base.
Asked buddy if okay to take it apart for closer inspection and during closer inspection, found the front shelf on the base that supports the slide, wasn't there (see last pic).
My buddy was kicking himself for missing that, but felt the right thing to do would be to still pay buddy for what it cost him to buy it, since his income is made from what he makes in the buying/selling.
Showing some of the pics I took after clean up of the Jacobson 5-1/4 , as we don't see a lot of Jacobson vises on GJ. As a side note, Rock Island bought them out in 1907.

LOLSmitty, I desperately need a Wilton 800 to mount to my bench. I just can't find one anywhere. Any way you could overnight me one in a flat rate box?
I just got back from the post office, they wouldn’t take a pallet. You were this close (holding thumb and forefinger 1/4” apart) to getting it.

I just got this little Colombian #43 yesterday.
It was super easy to take apart, and I’ve got the first coat of primer on it and all of the hardware is soaking in vinegar. I had to cut the handle off of the swivel base bolt because it was so bent it interfered with turning the bolt a complete revolution.
Any suggestions on the best way to replace it. It’s 1/4” diameter and 3” long.

FYI only. I'm not sure if they check everything, but USPS only allows spray paint to be shipped via surface mail (parcel post) and it's gotta be packaged and marked in certain ways:
Aerosol Paint Products. Aerosol paint products that are defined as flammable compressed gases are acceptable in the domestic mail via surface transportation only if they can qualify as ORM-D materials and meet the quantity limitations and applicable packaging requirements in 342.3 and 342.4.

They asked me if there were any liquids or perfumes in the package and I said no. I view the contents as an aerosol but the package does rattle a bit when you shake it. I’ve sent paint cans before without any problems. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.FYI only. Welcome to GJ.
There is a GJ thread dedicated to vise repair where you will find a wealth of information and knowledge and most likely get faster response to your questions.
As for the swivel arm handle, personally I would just find a 1/4” rod cut it to length and peen the ends.

Here's a question for you all. Recently, I saw an ebay ad for the biggest Craftsman 519x series vise ever made. I think the seller even had two of them for sale, one possibly smaller.
I'm sure you guys were following it. I last saw it at around $2k. I was wondering what it wound up going for, and did someone here score it?

There was a lot of talk here about the crazy price ( I have a lousy memory but I think it was way north of $2k ) this vise sold for and I do not recall anyone claiming the title for it here.

Razor, it belonged to a GJ member and I don't know if it sold or if he recalled it or what, but the eBay post said "SOLD" so that means if someone did buy it, they paid $2025.00 for the vise and $200.00 and change for shipping.---So then they were looking at over $2200.00, and lets not forget the tax that eBay is now charging.---That's another $111.00.

Well that was a waste of time......and gas.
Drove 140 mile roundtrip this morning to buy a Reed 2C that I had been resisting calling about for five days. I finally gave in to the urge and negotiated a price of $175, and was assured of no cracks, welds etc. I was surprised shift, trijeff or one of the other north-bayers hadn't snapped it up.
Got there and the first thing I noticed was a 3" crack on the back of the slide - very tight crack, but all the way through. Ugh.
Strange thing, there was no apparent pounding on the top of the slide, so no idea how it cracked.
I thought about offering $100 for it, because it was very nice except for that and it is an unusual model but I just knew I would be unsatisfied with it regardless of price.
The seller was very apologetic - it was his late fathers vise - and says he will relist with a picture showing the crack, but man o man what a disappointment.

That's a bummer Ken. Sorry to hear of that disappointing ride home.
I will tell you that I would have walked away too. I own about 30 vises and not one has a cracked slide. I know Smitty's expansive Prentiss collection is lacking an example with a cracked slide as well! This is certainly not by chance, it's because a lot of us just don't intentionally buy broken vises.
That being said, I do have a Reed with a bit of damage. I bought a late model Reed 1C out of Fallbrook, CA last year and had my dad pick it up. I noticed an irregularity in the sellers pics at the last minute and it ended up being a tiny piece broken from around the upper pipe jaw pin/jaw shelf. Admittedly it is very minor and the vise cleaned up awesome and for $40 I couldn't really go wrong.
I do wonder how it affects the value though. I just watched a Reed 1C in a no reserve auction go for over $350 plus shipping last week. There's another one going strong right now too. Not that I'm looking to sell mine per se, but it bums me out a bit thinking of how much it hurts the value of mine.

It was tough to walk away because it was a nice vise at a great price, a vise I've wanted since I bought my 3C. I wasn't looking to flip it, but we will probably all sell eventually and I think I would have had trouble getting a buyer at my purchase price even though it was a totally tight crack and didn't affect function.
I remember your Reed with the break out above the pin, again, zero affect on function but I do wonder about resale value. But yeah, for $40 I would've bought it too - you'll definitely get that money back!
I am still second guessing myself about walking away, damn! Some dreamer just put another 2C on CL locally, he wants $580 for it. LOL.
