Hot Dawg 60,000 BTU Cost

I received a quote from a local propane company to install a Hot Dawg in my shop.

They quoted me this model - "BTU Hot Dawg 60,000 BTU (Includes Venting)"

I was trying to find one online to look at specs. But when I do a search I only see one that matches this description but it's listed for about $800-$900. I was quoted $1875 just for the equipment. The material and installation are quoted separatly. Am I missing another unit or am I being gouged for the unit?

I can't speak specifically to hot dawg, but it is quite common for HVAC companies to put a significant mark up on equipment that they sell you. In my experience 100% markup is not uncommon, so you might not actually be getting gouged. Get two more quotes and then you'll know.

Is this a new install or replacement.........makes a huge difference on venting, fuel supply pipe, electrical supply, hardware supports, etc......new install could use several $100 in pipe, regulator and fittings.

New Install labor could be double vs replacement.


Google the heater........ prices are $600-$1200 just for the heater.

these guys hooked me up on my 125k btu unit . best price hands down even my contractor buddy local couldnt beat it with his pricing .

call them up talk with them and they will put together a package deal for unit / exhaust pipe kit and shipping .

i had mine up and fired off in no time stupid easy .

Vertical vent kit is under $100

Also depends how much pipe will be needed.....one 10' stick or 80 feet of pipe?

Price seems high, since I have $750 total investment into my hot dawg 75k heater project

I'm looking at the Mr heater Big max from Menards. 80,000BTU. it is $469 without vent.

I have already trenched my own yard and ran gas line about 60 feet. It cost me $70 to rent the trencher, it took me 2 hours of my own labor. I have about $350 in pipe and fittings and valves to connect in the house and get it outside, thru the trench and then thru the wall of the garage and up to the ceiling ready for the heater. I figure I will be right at about $1,000 total doing it myself.

Quote doesn't seem terribly out of line to me. Code now requires stainless venting, the vent kit for the heater is probably 250-300. So the heater and venting is probably 1100 his cost.

When I did my 45kbtu heater myself my totals were about like this:

500 heater unit
300 concentric stainless vent kit
200 csst gas lines, fittings
150 gas appliance whip, iron pipe, iron fittings, wire, brackets, thermostat, misc supplies.

For me it was about a month long project, working about 2-3 hours each weekend.

Not sure about your statement that his cost may be about $1100 when the unit can be bought online with no contractor pricing for $700-$800, and yes it looks like the venting is about 2-3 hundred. It just seems like a markup of 60% is a bit much

why trench a line and use propane and bla bla bla . . . . tank on back side of shop and line in thats it .

my friend did his shop like this and used 2 100lb tanks and he does just fine in the winter .

maybe your code rules = this i dont know .

I would get clarification on which model of the Hot Dawg 60K BTU you are getting. For example, on H-mac.com site, the Stainless Steel with Separate Combustion Chamber goes for 1,419.00 Where the aluminum with Separate Combustion Chamber goes for 1,229.00 and the bottom line goes for 732.00. Huge price differences for a 60K BTU with different options. I opted for a 75K aluminum separate combustion chamber just to ensure I'm not burning any vapors int he garage.

EDIT - I have a 100 GALLON tank next to the garage, no trenching.

My first quote just came in. Yikes.

26 x 44 x 12 with R19 walls and R30 ceiling. The quote includes extending an existing 1" black pipe natural gas line about 15 feet, going thru the sill and then underground about 130 feet. I would be opening the trench. Contractor proposed a 75k BTU Hot Dawg heater. $6400.

That pipe cost might be well over $1500.

As a very general estimate, installing gas line costs $10 to $30 per foot or more in some locations.

That's where I bought my 60k Hot Dawk for 692.00 picked up. I probably have 150.00 in 3 inch piping, fittings, and regulator. If you have gas and electric nearby the mounting location you'll have less than 1k into it. Otherwise, the price will escalate by installing electric and gas. I had a few garages I ran off of my home propane tank. Running the gas line up the back of the garage was easy and with the fuse panel being the garage, electric was also easy to run.

you can buy anything cheaper online and have it shipped to your door. my company sells modine and a hot dawg hd60lp sells for $1,000 plus install i typically can have a 2 man crew including vent and setting a tank and running gas lines im near the $1800 range for complete install including unit

that being said we offer labor warranty if we install it and also have carry the warranty through modine. and 24hr tech support if it goes down. so you have the insurance that we will take care of the customer. anyway 3k for that to be installed is steep and they are most likely making 200% off that
