New garbage cans

Our city is having everybody get new garbage cans. They are going to the type that a truck arm will pick them up and dump.35 and 95 gallon garbage cans. We have a 30 gallon now , and never fill it. My question is where to keep it . Our garage not that big. Then next will be for recyclables . Another garbage can to store.

Good question and I may have this issue at the new place. Where we are now we are able to choose a big or small can that the truck can pick up - you might check with your trash company. Maybe tell them you have physical issues with handling the large can. As I recall we weren't offered the choice and just told we would get the huge one. But when we called and said we had a long drive and moving the large one would be difficult for us they said we could get the small one. Think we might have mentioned we were older - that's true although we are in good physical shape. The size of the big cans is quite large but I guess they would rather have that than two regular size cans.

We are in an area that allows the cans to be near the road since I have a long gravel drive and just take the stuff down in a bag or two with the pickup and drop them in before trash day and have a smaller can in the garage. Most places want them out of sight though. BTW, the large can is handy for disposing of large things - we went back to the big one since we are trying to declutter and can put the can by the road.

We have (4) 96 gallon cans, and they sure as hell ain't kept in the garage!

(2) for Trash (1) for Green Waste and (1) for recyclables. They are picked up once a week

Used to keep it in the garage, but the flies and the smell got too strong. Recycling is OK in the garage.

I keep mine at the side of the house hidden by a small section of fence panel. I have an upside-down U-shaped bar attached to the side of the house that pivots over the lid to keep critters out.

I filled mine to the top with busted up ceramic tile. It was too heavy for the truck's hydraulic system. Probably well over 500 pounds. Driver said to put half in the neighbor's which he had just emptied, and he'd be back in 20 minutes. That worked.

We have 3 plastic cans, **** quality, they're replacing at least 2 a year. We have 3 trash trucks now instead of 1... & everything goes in the same ******** landfill.


As an added bonus the local recycle place has been closed for the past 3 weeks & I'm about ready to throw all that in the regular trash as well.

The cans belong to the trash collection company, as long as they pick up our trash, why should I complain, other than to just have a reason with which to argue? We pay their fee willingly, they remove stuff we otherwise would havr to take to the dump... and pay their exhorbent amout for a 1/4 pickup truck load of garbage...

Add to this they help us recycle. So yeah, our trash company are daemon, except really they're not. Because we USED to have to haul our own trash... do that for a few years to a dead landfill that keeps getting further and further away, and tell me how evil your garbage hauler (who go home to their wives stinking of the worst of your garbage pail EVERY night) is.

I'll seperate recyclable from Yard from Garbage because I've dealt with the alternative, and you could not pay me enough to do what they do...

We have two 95 gallon cans, one black for trash and the blue for recycling. I store them just outside the garage on the concrete pad, not blocking the doors. We keep 30 gallon trash cans in the house and dump into the 95's as needed. On collection day, our 100 yard driveway is too long for me to drag them out, so I searched online and found an aluminum trash can carrier that slips into a 2" receiver hitch. It is small and light enough I can stow it in the bed of my truck. Take the trash out on pickup day, stow the caddie, and keep on going to town.

I'd go with as close to the same size as you already have. BTW, I hope when you say they're "having you get" a new can, you don't mean you have to purchase one. Your garbage fees should include one if they require a specific type.

We have the small garbage (weekly) and large re-cycle (2 weeks). We compost organics Most of the bones and such we freeze until the morning of the PU. It helps keep the bears away. We had a mamma with three cubs last year. One of the neighbors couldn't resist shooting the mama and we now have 3 little nitwit bears running around the ridge.

It's half a mile from the house to where they pick up the cans. The new cans that their truck picks up are huge and can be difficult to load into the back of a pickup truck when full. I got a cansporter for the UTV which makes it a lot easier.

They're not cheap but they're well made. One of the neighbors is a professional welder and when he saw it he's like "I could make that" but after he'd fully examined it he said it wouldn't be worth the time unless it was a fun project.

Though given enough time I can throw out a house in my garbage. Kind of joking aside, when I have been doing projects, or a spring cleaning that bigger can comes in very handy.

Two big ones, parked on the side of the shop. Size of the one on the far left in the above picture. As for the recycling, I'm surprised. The markets for recyclable items is drying up fast. Abilene here stopped accepting glass for recycling. Lots of cities are no longer recycling plastics - the resale dollars aren't there to sustain the programs.

If I may, since we just went through this same thing. I now have 3 brand new garbage cans, not owned by waste management, that I cannot use for trash at the street.

I could keep putting garbage in them, and then emptying them into the appropriate can... but there has to be a better use for $200 in garbage cans. They are nice, heavy duty, 8" wheels with attached lids. Just like the WM supplied cans, only green and not black. Who has re-purposed their old cans?

We have the big cans with wheels.
Most of the guys with long drives around here just hook the can handle over the hitch ball to drag the can to the street.
At least once a year you see someone going down the highway at 60MPH and a can rolling along behind him.

I personally like the large company owned garbage cans. The ones around here are fairly sturdy, so even though they get banged around and thrown around, I have no cracks or anything.

At the end of the day, we pay the trash company $24/year to "rent" their cans. I'm more than happy with that. With big cans costing near $100, I'll gladly rent their cans and if theirs break because they throw them around, they replace for free. They wouldn't replace purchased cans.

We also have the supplied cans. I keep them outside. The recycle can issue is a marketing nightmare. Our city as well as all the other were sold a bill of goods. I also have two perfectly good 36 gallon cans on a roller cart that I plan to convert to a garden storage cart for my wife . I'll keep all the chems, ferts and other dirt stuff I'd rather not have in my garage.
One more thing, A pet peeve of mine is the design of the cart is horrible. When full very top heavy, Not user friendly. Has a narrow wheel base that loves to tip over in my yard!

Did I mention, I think they ****!

To answer the OP's original question. We built a little garbage shed on a slab. It hides the cans, keeps them safe from high winds, and stores overflow.

The BIG cans are a real PITA!!! I'm retired, and try rolling one of those suckers down a long driveway with an 11 degree slope. Wont happen........... So we had to purchase two of the smaller cans, and they were even a problem going down the driveway. So I removed the wheels, and the can would slide down the driveway in the winter unattended!!! Worked wonders!! Was quite a spectacle.

Now that we're in TN, we just go to the dump, and it's FREE!!!

I've got two of the 95G cans, one for trash and one for recycling. Our town's waste hauler will only take what is in the cans -- no overflow bags or containers -- so even though most weeks our cans are less than half full I appreciate the extra capacity for weeks where I've got refuse from a project, or we've got relatives over or something.

The first couple of months I kept them in the garage, but that got old because every time we'd lift the lid we were hit by horrendous stench from my son's diapers (despite being double bagged in some cases). I also worried that it was attracting insects into the garage on warmer days, particularly if I was leaving the overhead doors open while working.

I keep them about 8' from the house in the driveway. They're visible, but honestly two neatly kept garbage containers really don't bother me visually, and they're still easily accessible w/o being so close to the house that the insects that might be attracted will be an issue.

I've thought about building a 3-sided enclosure for them and stacks of fire wood, something about 3-4' deep by 12' wide ought to work fairly well at keeping both items dry, and some what more visually appealing.

Most cities that I'm aware of have ordinances that mandate the cans be out of sight from the street. Those ordinances are never enforced as far as I can see.

I built a patio block base on the side of the yard, hold both 45 gallon trash cans
as well as 3 35 gal cans for recycling. We are required to separate paper as well
as cardboard from cans and bottles, thus the 3 cans. With just the two of us I
load up the truck and take it to the dump about every other week. More often in the warm months. Local dump is free for recycling, about 4 a can for trash,
or $7 per 100 lb for bulk. Separate charge for tires, Freon appliances, mattresses, etc.
