I do appreciate that. And I agree, my effort, my choice. I am a firm believer is restoring history. Tools, cars, appliances, whatever, are not made like they use to be. I am a huge supporter of the quality and over engineering that went into everything made from the industrial revolution into the 1960s or 70s, but I will always classify myself as a restomod guy. I love the engineering in it, but if I can easily improve, or make it to my liking, I will. I guess it is worth adding that I am only 31. I’ve spent a lot of time with my superiors learning their techniques and tricks. It is knowledge I consider priceless and that I plan to pass on to my son.

For fun, I’d like to also add that the first car I drive was a 1948 Chrysler Town and Country Woody Convertible. My senior prom I was chauffeured in a 1938 Chrysler Imperial 4 door convertible. For my wedding, my wife and I were chauffeured in a 1957 Imperial with a 392 Hemi. Those were all owned by a childhood friend of my pap. They both passed away in 2016. I’ve spent my life dedicated to learning from these great men and several others who haven’t been mentioned. My next door neighbor, a retired Vietnam vet and an adopted grandpa in my opinion, is teaching me to use the lathe. He was working for Kellogg American compressors when the compressor I use on a daily basis was made.

I am an electrical engineer who use to work for Apple. I am now a true enthusiast of vintage equipment that will serve me and my family for decades to come. That is code for I’ll probably need to replace the 10 year old computer I never use. Cheers gents [emoji482]

Looking good Wiz! It is a fun process to be able to clean up old iron and make it your own. Did the box arrive with the part? I hadn’t heard different so I assumed so.

So colors... I got the green and tried it out.

Nope. Not the green I hoped for. I had a can of VHT graphite wheel paint.

I think this is the winner. I just wish it wasn’t $14 a can [emoji23]

pretty simple repair on the quill for a decent machinist. Mill out a dovetail slot, make a tooth to fit, drive it in and either silver solder or red Loctite it in place.

My father in law is a machinist, I’ll have to ask him. Thanks for the suggestion!

If I wind up parting out my parts drill instead of fixing it, I may send it your way to return the favor. Only problem is it is missing one of the little black knobs.

Pulled the capacitor out of the motor to see if I could learn anything else about it.

I don’t think it is original but it is definitely older.

Got the bearing out of the table after sandblasting today. Realized it was held in with a spanner nut.

It is a Nice 407-22 made in Philadelphia. If you can’t find new old stock, the modern trade number is 1616. I ordered a 1616-RS rubber sealed replacement off eBay. The bearing is 1.125” OD x 0.500” ID x 0.375” wide.

I ordered a new one because mine appears to be missing 2 balls (must be married [emoji23]) it spins free, but has some play and I don’t want the table binding.

Here are the parts I had a chance to blast. All the part numbers from the castings are perfectly legible.

The need wiped down with acetone and they are ready to prime. The back of the drill head needs hit with stripper for a few stubborn spots.

I just picked up the same press it has a 3 phase motor so getting a VFD to run it. Really interested to see your finished product and if you can send me to where you got the bearing that would be great.

Thanks

The guy I got my parts machine from told me he had a VFD setup if I ever wanted it. If I have a reason for it I may. But as is, I really don’t need it. This will be used for drilling and polishing mainly. Nothing to intricate as I mainly do auto repair. Not as much in the wood working area.

Couple colors to consider if you don't want to do the $14./can graphite, buffer is Rustoleum Hammered Black, drill press is Plasticote T10 Machinery Gray.

More work done today. Blasting the big pieces takes a lot longer. I opted to use chemical stripper on the table and base and the. A wire wheel for I blast them. Hopefully I’ll get primer on them tomorrow or this weekend.

Got some of the small parts painted today. I’m definitely happy with my choice of color.

Been letting the aircraft remover work wonders on the big pieces. Drill head needs a little razor blade work to get the last bits off. Base needs more wire wheel then the blaster again. Table needs everything.

After that, I am going to polish the table top then paint it. Then it’s on to stripping the. Lot heads and polishing them up. Also need to clean the pole. Aircraft stripper on a small spot did wonders. Probably clean and polish it then coat it in metal protector. All the cast surfaces without paint are getting brushed with bar and chain oil for protection.

Re: parts, join OWWM.org and post a wanted ad on the BOYD subforum. A ton of members there have restored this model drill press and have extra parts, donor machines, etc.

Having restored many machines and hunted down many odd parts, I predict you will do much better there versus ebay. People there have come up with some truly impossible-to-find parts for my machines at very cheap prices (it's a nice community and people often try to help out each other with restorations). Just my 0.02.

i have a delta like this one. came from a school in california. has a spot that hangs up also.

Me too. Trying to use every free minute I have to finish. I’m hoping within a week or two. I can work on it at lunch time when I work from home, but I am limited on evening work because my shop is under the bedrooms in our house and my son goes to bed pretty early.

After some wire wheeling and sand blasting I finally got everything cleaned up. Should be priming the rest of the parts later tonight.

Scored what appears to be a never used Delta Rockwell 1 hp 110-220 motor for dirt cheap. Plugged it in and it works!

Motor cleaned and painted. Install and hopefully testing tomorrow.

Any ideas what to do on the name plate? I wanted to help the oxidation on the aluminum without removing the paint. I’ve tried tooth brush and dish soap so far to remove the grime.

I also opened the motor up. It is brand new inside. Money well spent!

Well, corrosion is a kind of oxidation, but when the paint is gone and there are pits in the aluminum, it ain't ever coming back.

Ask around here. Someone might have a toasted motor with a gooder name plate.

I realize the paint is gone. I was more looking to just smooth the rough spots some abs try to polish it. It won’t be perfect, but I want it to be original. I have some Simichrome I may try. I just don’t want to ruin the remaining paint.

Here's what I would do:

1. Start by polishing it with Simichrome. In my experience Simichrome won't remove Delta nameplate paint as long as you go easy. Try an inconspicuous spot at first.

2. Get some matching black and red acrylic artists paints. (not enamel!!) Use the sharp point of a round toothpick to fill in the areas with missing paint. (Best done under magnification.)

3. One it's dry hit it with clear spray lacquer. The lacquer won't dissolve the acrylic paint and will have the effect of adding gloss and depth which will tend to optically blend the touch up areas.

It won't be perfect, but it'll be look 100X better just by filling in the missing black.

Here's one I just did and it turned out decent:

That’s fantastic advice! Thank you! I will start with the Simichrome and see what I am working with.

Hello, just have to say how great a job you are doing. Also, I think the color is fabulous and just right for this project. Great choice. Well done.

Thank you!!!

And it drills!!!

I’ve learned very quickly that 1 hp is plenty for a drill press. I also need some *********** clamps. None of my clamps are big enough to hold anything to the table.

I did have to reverse the motor. I found an article on how to do that to a Delta repulsion induction motor if anyone cares to see it.

Get the outlet and light installed.

Also picked up an old Dorman tapping head to use with it. Haven’t had a chance to test it yet. I need to clean up the taper. It’s a little rough.

Nice DP-600. I just picked up the same one. Mine is from 1944. How did you collar off the bottom of the column; mine is rust welded together?
Thank you
