Not a garage sale, but snagged this on a job site today. It's rough, but will sit stop the garage cabinet just fine.

I tried the Thermocure (by Evaporust) product. Looks and works pretty much like a quart of Evaporust. It does seem thicker - so maybe it really is a 3X concentrate. I had paid $18 for a gallon of Evaporust, and $21 for a quart of Thermocure.
I’m trying to soak the post off the base of a drill press. Put them in a $15 mixing tub with Evaporust/Thermocure diluted with six or seven gallons of tap water. It is removing the rust from the surfaces. We’ll see how well it frees up the post. The bubble wrap floating on the surface is to reduce evaporation. I’ve been thinking of adding a small submersible circulation pump, but haven’t yet. Going to try banging on it, and maybe a torch.

Not a garage sale find but CL find today. 3/4" drive Proto Metric Socket set, basically unused. Purchased from a local GM plant mechanic who is counting the days until retirement, and who already sold the house and is getting out of NY heading to Florida......he was basically selling cheap to lighten his load. $100

Picked up this air compressor at a garage sale last weekend. Bought it for the 1hp motor that was mounted to it.
Is there any value in these pumps? Seems to be working fine. Just don’t really know much about old Saylor-Beall pumps.

Kind of a rainy morning for a subdivision sale but I managed to get a few things! Like New Dremel in a box, Craftsman 1/4dr Ratchet and hand driver and an LL Bean swivel thermometer.

We went to a S Lake Tahoe garage sale and an estate sale this morning. Here are the tools we brought home. Everything, Bernard pliers (with the dog logo), part of a Red Devil hacksaw, some Stanley tools, a WW2 Jeep/GMTK correct Oiler, a couple of crowbars and a Stiletto hammer. Does anybody know when Stanley Handyman half hatchets we’re introduced?

At least as early as 1933: Stanley Axes & Hatchets

"In the “NEW STANLEY TOOLS” section of the 1933 Stanley Tools Catalog No.34, there were 11 hatchets and two small axes listed. Actually the axes were more like hatchets but they were referred to as axes. One hatchet was described as a “100 PLUS” Special Carpenter's Half Hatchet although it also includes a Stanley-Atha label. Of the remaining edge tools on the two pages involved, four models are designated as FOUR SQUARE hatchets."

Slipped out for a "just before closing" Friday estate sale - all the boxes (all small carry boxes) had been dumped into a tub and the boxes were being sold separately...

I guess the usual tool scarfing pros never went, as I don't think much was gone?

A giant old key, Thorsen long pattern consecutive set from 5/16 to 5/8, Barcalo short DBE, williams combo, Tru-Fit, DBE, 2 crowbars, wire brush, Williams Water pump pliers, SO, Fuller (Germany) and Crescent Needle nose, Small Vise grips, and a 12 ft tape $20 all!

From the free pile at a yard sale this afternoon: Two LED light fixtures, a long 1/4" drill bit, a New Britain center punch, no name offset flat blade and phillips screwdrivers, a small combination square (the ruler is rusty so I can't read the brand name but I can make out Made in USA, it will soak in Evaoprust overnight), a Craftsman cold chisel that needs some love, three Craftsman nut drivers, and a Craftsman 1/4" drive socket driver.

Edited to add: Now that I have the rust cleaned off, I can see the combination square is a Mayes. The company is still around, but they've been a part of Great Neck tools for a long time. According to the specs on their website for the current 6" combination square, it's a reasonably accurate tool.

Hit a couple of sales, Thursday and Friday along with my usual Restore stops. Most were busts, but a few yielded gems:

Leather pad from a Klein climber, SK spark plug socket, Plomb 7/32 socket, two Starrett dividers, Plomb screwdriver, WWII glasses pouch, socket spinner with very heavy duty shaft, Williams 5/8s combo, Starrett tri-square, and a micrometer head. Also, picked up this Eagle oiler:

All that cost me $13.
I also came across someone adertising that they were cleaning out their parents house, which had been occupied for over 40 years. The add listed tools, so off I went. Well, there wasn't much of interest there, mostly homeowner stuff that I already had. But, there as a low-end Craftsman roller in the corner, marked "tools= $250" Didn't see anything that put it up at that amount, but I did see something of interest, so I asked if they would seperate it out. Sure, and we settled on $20:

A complete (with extras!) Snap-on military 3/8's set. The extras were things I needed to complete an Action set I was working on, so doubly happy.

So the largest pair of needle nose were the SO's, and oddly, smooth grip (not Vac-U-Grip) and were marked "E" so 1944 wartime! I like the Wartime and before SO stuff! Give me something semi legit for the old SO top box!

Stuart, if you do a lot of layout/fab work, you will LOVE that sub size Combination square? I got one a few years back and now have several, as they are handy as all get out! I'd like to find a protractor head that size!

I have a 6" B&S square that also has a center head. I've never heard of a tiny protractor head.

Thanks. I have a couple 12" combination squares (a Stanley and a Starrett) but this is my first 6" one. It does seem like it will be pretty handy. I figured out it's a Mayes; the company has been around since the early 1900s and still exists, but is a division of Great Neck tools today. Still, it appears to be a pretty decent tool.

Rags, nice score on the chucks - are they Jacobs?

Sorry for the delay, was away boating for a few days. One chuck is a Jacobs, other is an Almond, made right here in MA. Have the same chuck on a Delta 17" drill press, good chuck, pretty sure it is a ball bearing design like the Jacobs "N" series.

A pile of misc for around $23. Socket set is SK 6 pt metric with a couple sizes missing.

P1080179.jpg

And yet another Coleman lantern from 1970's. This one looks like it's hardly ever been used. $25.

P1080182.jpg

A "coffee cup warmer". This thing gets up to 1000 degrees C. I thought it was interesting. $40.

P1080180.jpg

P1080181.jpg

And not shown is a Delta 17" DP600 DP from around 1946. It's a diamond in the rough. Complete except for one spoke of the handle which a fellow GJ member helped me with. Came with an almost new Dayton 1 HP motor. No image because I already took it all apart to restore. I'll post it to the DP thread when it's done. $180.

Looks like some great scores Dave. I found a similar circuit board vise a couple weeks back, threw it on Ebay, just shipped it out this AM. Looking forward to pics of the DP600.

Very few vendors at the Tahoe flea this morning, so I went to a couple of garage sales after buying a few tools. Here are today’s finds. The Craftsman=v= flex handle is 3/8” drive. I like these Cornwell 3/8” drive ratchets and the Channellock dykes are like new.

Good day. 2 stops.
First stop was a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. I always see ppl on here with amazing finds there, but the one closest to where I live has filing cabinets, furniture, and half full cans of old house paint. I've never found anything good.

Today went to a farther away location. It was very small, the pickings were slim (much like the other store), and I thought I was gonna leave empty handed. Til I saw these on the shelf marked $1/box, 4 boxes. I thought they looked like pipe jaws for an exposed screw vise, figured why not for $4.26 out the door with tax.

The boxes aren't marked, but the jaws have 4-1041-1 stamped on them, which is the only marking. All are new in the box. Quick Google search, and they are for Versa Vises and Gyro Vises!!! How cool, most of those don't have the pipe jaws.

2nd stop yielded the rest @ $2/each:
Armstrong Chicago 2" *********** c-clamp
old Blue Point OEX220 combo wrench, 11/16"
Craftsman -H- USA 43531 extension, 1/4 drive 6" long
Crescent USA "Satanic" mini needle nose pliers, no. 666-6
Kelsey-Hayes Tool no. 43224 Cam-Loc wrench, 3/4"
M. Klein & Sons Chicago no. 500-10 adjustable

I cleaned up the little Mayes combination square I posted in my free haul from yesterday...Evaporust did a good job of removing the rust from the rule, but unfortunately it's pretty badly pitted and there's nothing I can do about that. The head cleaned up nicely, it's a zinc casting so there was no rust but I did have to flatten the faces with some 400 grit wet or dry paper on a granite surface plate, followed up with a little polishing.

I think I had a VERY good day! Started with a BANG too!

This was day one of my big Last Sunday in August Weekend, where one part of town has dozens, if not hundreds of yard sales (Who can count em all?). A flea market as well on Sunday! so going back tomorrow!

My FIRST real stop, and I see a sword. not a huge sword, but sword with Scabbard. I'm not too excited and usually the want well north of three figures for ANY long blade.

I look it over and it's NOT a presentation or ornamental "dress sword. Saber pattern but at 31" not a cavalry saber! the little girl say her dad found it "under an old house" (Basement?) I ask how much and she gets dad...

How about $40?" I'm like YES! in my head but that's over half the "ready" money I brought, baring the C note and grant I have tucked away for "emergencies" (does this Qualify?) So I think and consider and offer $30 - "Sure!" WOW! PAID AND GONE!

A littler after the day research and its a C. R. Kirschbaum & Company, German/Prussia Solingen made import blade, probably from before the civil war! :bounce:

Other items in the Pic from later include An Edge brand (Solengin Germany again)small hunting knife - $3 - in need of quite a bit of TLC, A WWI Trench lighter - $5, A small brass? ladel spoon - $1, the upper items were from a free pile; hammer handle and a non-Coleman pump from something I need to research. (also from the same free pile, a Mattock - later pic)

attachment.php

The very NEXT score is a Rock island 574 vise with the Brittman electric brass plate! for.. ten bucks! OK if I had to carp, it's missing the base but still!

attachment.php

attachment.php

And the Free Mattock - made in Poland, and a "stress" bat for programmers (going to work for one of the teams that does such... :pimpflash

attachment.php

A Griswold No. 9 10" skillet (can't these people count?....) that should clean up and season fine...

attachment.php

attachment.php

And a can of CF about 1/3 full for cents fifty...

attachment.php

More to come!
