Curious about a tool hoarders garage?

Hafta move. Wife says so. Neighbors delighted. My life *****. At one time calculated that I had 100 thousand pounds of equipment and tools in my garage. I got tired of having to literally climb over sharp pointy stuff, I got a couple of sea vans for the back yard. Filled those up so I bought a 5000 Sf tilt-up. Filled it up too (that’s another thread). I’d open up the garage every now and then and passers by would slow down and their jaws would hit the ground.

Have a thing about punches. Big huge 100 ton Whitney’s, model 96’s, small little 20’s, and Rotex’s and weidemanns thrown in. It’s all manual stuff except a big old Bridgeport that I’ve abused by lack of attention. Most of this stuff I haven’t even seen for 20 years, and I’m amazed I humped all this stuff cuz it all weighs a ton!

Tell me what you like and I’ve probably got it. Slip rolls, bead rollers, welders, drill presses, big cp riveters, burr kings, all vintage AMERICAN! The good ol days! Now I stop to get gas here in California, can’t tell if the clerk is a boy or a girl.

If you know how to use those tools you sir are a lucky guy. I have a buddy who has a pretty good collection of tools nothing I like more than helping or especially using his tools on one of my projects. He comes to my house to use wood working tools. We always manage to having a celebratory beer at the end of the work day.
Do you really have to move? No way to take your treasures? I’d be interested in an old arc welder and a wheeled band saw buy you are way too far. Good luck

Collecting? Funny! And I’m keeping most of it. Love wrenching, etc. But just the sheer act of physically. Moving this stuff is daunting! I’m not as young as I was when I bought it!

Moving is a nearly unfathomable thought for someone with your propensity for acquiring manufacturing artifacts Bob. Once you get to the point where you haven't seen or obviously had use of your treasures in 20 years though, it's time to let go. Not all of course but only keep what you will realistically use at the new place. Maybe it's time for a large well advertised estate auction, even if it means getting help moving it offsite. Do you have your junk or does it have you....It's only valuable to you when you use it or sell it. Simply storing it all may consume you. Also....you're far from alone. Ed.

I don't know why, but I'm always fascinated by tool hoarders. I'm jealous and sympathetic at the same time...lol

Good luck with the move, and hopefully it will help you thin out the hoard a little.

Woof!, I don’t envy you. I don’t consider myself a tool hoarder but I’ve got two semi loads worth to move right now. Today starts the first loading leaving Cali and heading to AZ and after I polish off this third cup of joe, I’m reluctantly on it.

I think the best definition of tool and machinery hoarding I have heard is:

If you have to move, you are forced to hire industrial movers, and they all complain on how hard the work is.

Strange but I don't see any hoarding problems, at least you can walk into your man cave, on the other hand even the mice in my man cave can not move around...

I say if you love buying then don't stop.:thumbup::thumbup:

I can sympathize with you guys. I'm not quite a hoarder-I believe that hoarding requires at least one cat carcass- but next week at this time I will be retired. The place I work for has been sold. I now have to add 47 years worth of mechanic tools to an already overstuffed basement. This is five "stacks" including my original 1977 Snapon set.

The one on the left looks like a brinell hardness tester.

I'm not sure what make of bender that is but between it and the box & pan I, I, well I won't say but geez man that is eye candy!

Wish I had your problems .... well sort of...

Can the sea cans be lifted with a crane and set on a flat bed or do the contents have to be properly packed and secured for the trip?

Thanks for the eye candy anyway.

Helped a friend move his "hoard" three times. At least 5 huge Snap On boxes full of tools, several metal lathes and mills, and other assorted items. When we started moving this stuff into a cramped back yard shed he used most of it everyday. He moved to a much larger home with an exceptional basement and the usage slowed down. On his final (hopefully) move he built a 4000 sq foot garage shop with 3 phase wiring and now doesn't use any of it. It has now become a collection and exhibit for excess! Sadly, if he passed away tomorrow his wife and daughter will sell it all for scrap.

Right now the bulk of the fab stuff is coming to my office in Avondale. This is the biggest heaviest stuff. Heck I only moved four items this trip and that was close to 9klbs.

The automotive stuff will be going to Prescott........well once we find a house to buy.

If the A-Team ever got locked up in there I'd like to see what they would fashion up. :)

I'd like to see a few overall shots of the "hoard". My definition of a hoarder is someone who keeps buying more stuff he doesn't have room for. So, if you've got the room, you're not a hoarder.

How old are you? I turn 60 on Tuesday and still keep buying vintage tools I don't need at the same time I'm trying to resell tools to thin my hoard because my own mortality is somewhat on my mind.

He buys shipping containers and buildings to keep his tools in. He will never run out of space as long as he can afford some more property.:lol_hitti Like I said, I'm jealous and sympathetic at the same time. I also understand the mentality, If I was rich I would probably be a crazy hoarder..lol

It's not hoarding if you know where everything is. You do, don't you?
Good luck with the move; I thought I had a lot of stuff when we relocated from WA to AZ...it was nothing compared to this.

last time I moved from a apartment to a house my friends told me they're done moving me until I get rid of the books lol.

in the last 18 years I think the tools may be more of a issue now.
