Mazda(ford) 3.0 water pump pulley puller

Working on daughters 04 mazda 6 3.0L and pulling cylinder heads. It has a pulley on the back of the camshaft that turns the water pump. Need to remove this pulley. There is a special pulley for this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A8Q4FWO/?tag=atomicindus08-20. I usually don't have any problem buying specialty tools but this is for the daughters car and have never ran into a need for this tool and don't see ever needing it again. So having a hard time ordering a tool this expensive, 112 for the OTC and 62 for the CTA. If I can't find one I guess I will be ordering the CTA one.

I tried penetrating fluid and a 2x4 and hammer but it's rusted pretty good and didn't budge. Anyone have suggestions for anything besides the specialty puller that will never be used again? Anyone have one they would be willing to sell? Or just bite the bullet and buy the puller?

I believe I would dig into spare accessory pulleys or my bucket o' metal and try and combine something with a PS pump pulley puller tool. Or just go for the CTA.

Looks like one guy on YT with foul language got it off with a steering wheel pulley puller.

Ya I watched that. Don't think a PS pulley puller will work at all. I tried a 3 jaw but not much of a lip to grab onto. I will try a yoke puller with some bolts and washers and nuts tomorrow. Letting her soak in some penetrant tonight.

Heat up the pulley so it expands. Even if you have a heat gun from harbor freight. Sometimes a little heat makes all the difference.

Not much of a lip for puller to grab onto, I tried already. Also a power steering pulley puller wont work on this, nothing for it to grab.

I'm not familiar with this repair specifically, but does the pulley absolutely need to come off? Can you remove the head and just send it to the machine shop as is? My local machine shop doesn't charge much if anything, for pulling valve rocker assemblies, studs, or cams. If the budget's tight, I'll pull the cams and Rockers myself and reset the valve lash which I do anyway after torquing down the heads.

Or could you simply remove the camshaft entirely? Pull the bearing caps, remove cam with pulley still attached?

That may just work to pull the cam off with the pulley. There is an end cap at the end of the cylinder head that the cam goes threw but looks like only two bolts and it will come off unless there is another one buried. I'll give that a shot when I get some time.

There are a couple of the rotunda (303-S455) version of that tool on that auction site that starts with an e and ends with a y. At least one of them is B/O.

It’s a pretty trivial task with the tool. Plan on replacing every plastic bit that you touch though. I don’t like anything about working on that engine.

They are still almost double what the cta one is. I haven't had a chance to take off the timing and pull the cam yet to see if I can take it off with the cam. It does have a seal that I would like to replace but we'll see.

I would buy the CTA tool because if you mess around and bend that pulley you will be unhappy. Doesn't that engine also require tools for lining up and holding the cams also

One of the reviews for the OTC puller mentions that the pulley is only $20 from Ford. Destroying it might be the best/cheapest option??

I made this one for my Jimmy power steering pump. It was a Sunday when everything was closed. The long diagonal part is the installation tool that just stores there so it's all together. This one uses a forcing screw in the center whereas it looks like you need the 2 bolts on the outside.

They are a ***** to pull, tight, but still a *****. The one you linked to looks nice and thick (maximum thickness to just clear) and likely good hard steel.

You could buy the tool and then sell it as lightly used on Ebay afterwards and get back some of your money.
