I made a quick decision to burry 1” pvc conduit under a driveway before final grading, to a 16’x12’ workshop 50’ from my outdoor distribution box. I only need one 20 amp 240v and one 20 amp 120 there. I have a 4 slot distribution box for in the shop. Was planning on pulling thwn 10 or 8 ga red, black, white, and bare copper gnd because that’s what I have.

I read this stuff all the time but when it gets to a specific situation I forget or misunderstand quite often. Is thwn used for underground outdoor runs in dry conduit.

#8 would be fine in 1” conduit and you can use #10 for the ground wire but it should be insulated. Can use a 50a breaker.

Underground conduit is considered wet location.

And yes THWN is proper wire to use.

Make sure to isolate neutral bar in subpanel which may require the purchase of a separate ground bar kit.

Also, you will need 2 ground rods

And once again I am about to get another job done right with such good help. Those ground rod will turn out to be my biggest hassle. Have to be pretty lucky to not hit rock. I am going to try driving at 45 dry angle hoping to glance off and go between a few. The. When it stops just pull it out with loader and try another spot.
