There is one on Ebay right now but the "Buy It Now" and shipping are a bit steep IMO and there are more than a few saw and grinder marks and possible weld spatter on the tops of the jaws. Otherwise it doesn't appear to be in bad condition.

A bit optimistic even in pristine condition...

Nice Smitty! That's your 2nd No. 18 right? I had this one in my watch page too but only for the fun of seeing how the auction went. When I saw what it went for I actually thought, I wonder if Smitty snagged this one? Congrats, it's very nice and I agree, it looks way better now that you've worked your magic.

BTW, go to Ebay and type Prentiss 18 into the search right now. You'll probably be as surprised as I was.

Thanks Chris, yes it’s the second one I’ve been lucky enough to find. I was also a bit surprised at the price, I thought it would go for about $40 higher. The seller was local so I also saved on shipping and he was the one that sold me the baby bullet out of the blue.

Yeah...68 was a good year in Prentiss land

If you have a mill then you should fit those jaws a little better. Use a Carbide end mill to fit the channel on the jaws so all jaw steel touches cast. Then true up the faces. Having gaps behind jaws could cause the jaws to break. Nice vise.

Yes, I agree. I am going to fit them a little better when I get a chance.

Picked up the Craftsman branded twin to my Rock Island today for $20. It’s in nice condition, although pretty good layer of surface rust.

Anyone know what the original color was on these Craftsman branded vises?

Are there any patent dates cast into the vise?

You can use a wood spacer under the vise and cut the triangle out of that.

I couldn't find any other markings on the vice. Although I never removed the jaws, and can't remove the swivel jaw, so might be some hidden there.

The workbench top is just two sheets of 3/4 ply screwed to a 2x4 frame. So if the cutout ever was a problem, I could just re-top it.

I also bought 7/8-9 x 3-1/2" bolts which should only leave me 1/4" of thread remaining, so no room for a spacer unless I order some longer ones.

Thanks for the idea though.

Va, I posted this last Saturday morning when this came up before. I’m not sure if you saw it because I deleted after 5 min. I’ll probably delete again soon.0a24321f2a56eceb15f396e0dca1e0f5.jpg

This is the 18 before I stripped the paint off.

Staying on topic, if you search hard enough, you should be able to find a hidden machinist vise in the photo.

Darn it! I was not the other bidder but I was planning on bidding and got sidetracked and forgot to set an alarm.

I've been trying to get a small Stanley through the bench swivel like that one for a display piece / business card holder on my desk at work.

Nice pickup Dave! You got a good deal on that one. The last 2 or 3 I've watched on Ebay went for way more! Congrats.

Smitty, you do know presentation.

Excellent marketing strategy Fierljeppen.---You could sell a hardware store 3 gross, next day, the owner is trying to track down this enormous purchase.---David Copperfield calls it "misdirection".;)

Sorry chris, the 2 bids are both mine as I raised my initial bid thinking there would be a flurry of bids in the last 2 seconds. That wasnt needed as i got it for opening bid (29.99). The auction had a few watchers. But it ended at 7 or 8pm EST on a Friday before a holiday, I think a lot of ppl were distracted.

I just picked up this Morgan Chicago no. 360. 6" jaws, swivel jaw, 165 lbs.
There isn't much info for these online. It sure is a beast of a vise! My Rock Island no. 573 is sitting on it for scale in one photo.

That’s a good question I want to say like around 9 44 at least that’s what sticks out to me in my memory it’s in storage currently so that’s why I can’t check atm. And boy is the one you have nice. These are a very nice size of vise and are stout and weigh about #120lbs which is stout for a 5in vise. Mine came from a old school and the jaws have been welded on and the nut was wore out so I had to replace it. Actually you know what I have a picture of the seller weighing it they are #116 lbs. 4df35391dd825016cee458ae2ca78d6f.jpg

Awesome find. I'm trying my hardest to locate any Morgan vise, for a good price, being my mother's family name.

Scored a Reed 31 combination vise today.

Needs some handle work and it’s missing the pipe jaws. Base plate, wing nut and washer are all intact. Searched high and low for the pipe jaws but came up empty.

Still Hard to beat at $27

Stripped the paint off of this Prentiss Bull Dog no 90. The vise really has a great sand texture to it and the black paint leaves a great hue.ef51650374261277325ff7dc5a34918c.jpg99b80d7bc1ff696c6a521d31cba2a712.jpg

Here's a little Stanley Victor #772 I got off of eBay WITH A BIRTHDAY GIFT CARD, about a month ago.---The description didn't say whether it was a Sweetheart or Victor, so I was gambling it was a Sweetheart.---All it said was, "OLD USED VINTAGE STANLEY TOOLS RARE SMALL BENCH MOUNT VISE VICTOR NO. 744. For sale - Exceptional - 6 inches in length.''---They didn't even get the # right.---But it is in good condition and all the parts were there.---Didn't even have to make retainer clips for it KMS.:)

Va,
The stamp and the slide look perfect, those are rare models indeed.

Hmm...didn’t you swear off eBay?
