We made a morning of hitting some interesting garage sales in eastern CA and Nevada. The first was in Markleeville, CA and was the best one of the day. The next one was in Gardnerville NV but there wasn’t much left by the time we arrived and my only find was an early Disston saw. Here are some pictures. The first one is all of the haul. Next shot is the metric Craftsman 1/2” drive set. Third is a Billings and Spencer 15” auto wrench. Four and five are a pre long C Craftsman speeder with a bad case of chrome peel. I really was happy to find the Powr-Kraft reversing drill with case and booklet in very good condition. Last was an S-K socket set box that I will feel compelled to fill up.

Miller, Please continue posting. That is one monster haul you got! How about the hand planes? Looking at that haul it's hard to believe there were only 4 block planes. Did you leave others behind? Need more info & pics of the vises too. And the hammers, saws, ...

I am pleased to announce that I missed out on a pair of matching 56" and 28" Lista toolboxes for $175 total by about 5 minutes.

Like 5th worst day of my life.

There was a garage sale today with nothing but tools, this is what I picked up:

attachment.php

- Mayes brand yardstick that's apparently unused, still in a plastic sleeve
- Nicholson file
- No name wobble socket adapter
- Tiny Huot drill index with #61 - #80 drill bits
- No name palm ratchet (that star shaped thing)
- Snap-On racheting box end wrenches 1/2" x 9/16", 3/8" x 7/16", 1/4" x 5/16"
- Proto Los Angeles pebble finish 3/4" line wrench

attachment.php

- Bernard pliers
- Diamond nut drivers 7/16", 3/8", 5/16", 11/32", 1/4"

attachment.php

- Diamond K26 slip joint pliers
- Three Petersen (made in Dewitt, Nebraska) Vise-Grips, two 5" and one 8" with duckbill jaws
- Can of WD-40
- Four casters

attachment.php

There was a good selection of name brand wrenches and sockets as well, but nothing I couldn't live without.

$20 for everything.

090119.JPGI have been looking for the 7/8 and 13/16 for awhile to complete this set. Finally found them at a FM in PA yesterday. Compared to rest of set and found the set is V^ and these were V and VV. For now the set is complete, but I'll keep looking.
Also picked up another CMAN 3/8 inch drive.
Now I'll concentrate of competing 2 sets of Metric combinations.

Geez, nice haul, Miller72! Great timber tools.
Had a crappy night after getting home from a great overnight at the cabin w/ MrsLS & our Labs. Woke late to pouring rain, so cancelled my plans to check on the fleas. Of course the rain abated until I hauled out a freshly sanded chestnut tabletop to finish. I was in the cellar getting a brush when I heard MrsLS yelling that the rain had started again! Soaked, so I put it under a ceiling fan for a couple hours. Seemed to work out okay. Didn’t go too out-of-flat.

A couple closeup pictures of that tiny Huot drill index I posted above...It has number drills in it from #61 to #80, 0.0390” in diameter to 0.0135". Not sure that I’ll ever have an application for them but at least they don't take up much space. :)

Picked up this 11 pc 1/4" Oxwall set for $5.00. Missing the small flexible tool handle, so I'll be needing that to complete the set. Not sure of the age on this set.

Also picked up three vintage auto/shop related cans. $4.00 for the *** and the other two for $6.00. All with nice graphics and no dents.

Those are the perfect tool for cleaning passages in carburetors. Really, for cleaning any small hole.

I have been getting a few random tools for really good deals lately. I was thinking of looking for an old vise that needed some love and seeing if I could work out a trade. Well this vise popped up on Craigslist Marketplace (That counts as a Garage Sale right?). It needs a lot of love, but I worked a deal for a toolbox I got for free (I sanded it down and painted it, total investment was about $15) and a grinder my Brother-in-Law gave me when they moved to Hawaii. So for a total investment from me was $15, I got this Reed vise. I wanna take some blacksmithing classes and I’ll use it once I get some stuff set up of my own.

I see the problems (broken sliding jaw that has been welded), but I also wanna see it looking good. Where can I find a new handle? I don't have a metal lathe. The base should be worth the $15.

Some good scores this past weekend! I didn't hit any sales this weekend since I went hiking in Laurel Highland hiking trails. Ran into a guy at the first shelter that was doing the whole 70 miles in 5 days by himself. Saturday's 12.5 miles hike was a little hard on me mentally and physically but I toughed it out and finised the day and then Sunday we did a tough 6.5 miles hike dued to the elevation changes we experienced. We ended up finishing the last 18.5 miles of the trail with him cause we could tell he was wanting some company. Over all a good hike with some rain on Sunday morning. Ended the hike with a lunch and beer in Ohiopyle, PA.

I did sell some stuff from my garage when I got back home from the hike on Sunday so now I got some folding money for the next few estate sales.

Picked up a very nice Gray socket set with a ratchet and metal box. 1/2 drive 3/8 to 1-1/8, with an extension, spark plug socket and for some reason a 3/8 drive 3/8 deep socket. The sockets look almost unused, but the ratchet was really stiff and would sometimes lock up. I took a look inside and it was bone dry, so I lubed it up and it feels much better now. The set feels much beefier than my other sockets and ratchets, and I could see this becoming my go to ratchet for suspension work. All in the set cost me $60, which I’m very happy with.

Picked up a few ball-pein hammer heads (Firestone, Lakeside) from "The Hammer Doctor" at the flea market. (I bet every flea market has one of these hammer and axe butchers. At least this particular guy doesn't paint bomb them when he's done grinding the eye and face.) As I often tell him, I wish he would just offer the heads as he finds them, since I would prefer to put my own period-correct handles on them, saving him time and effort. But I think he likes re-handling them too much to stop. :)

Also picked up a WF-21 rat and another Ford brake and reverse band ratchet wrench. If I had a dollar for every one I have found I would... probably have about $30 back in my pockets.

I also got a small Firestone Ball pein hammerhead a few weeks ago! it on my pics I through up a few days ago....

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8050214&postcount=4777

here in this post pic4 in the handle of the speedster. It's going to get one of my Red handle treatments as will sev others I have waiting.

Last weekend, last yard sale stop of the day.
Almost didn't pull in because from the road all I saw was baby clothes & Beanie babies.
There were 4 lot boxes of tools priced $20.00 each.
I asked could I pull out just what I wanted from each lot & they could quote me a price on that?
"Have to ask my husband..."
Ok, so I pulled out the Snap-on hiding underneath all the pittsburgh.
Husband arrives,& says 20 bucks...!

5 Snap-on torque adapters
Snap-on oil pressure crow foot
1/2" whateveryou call those wrenches (open end has the plus grooves)
And worlds biggest short wrench.
ok maybe not in the world, but the biggest one I've seen 1-3/8"

Here are some recent “everything but garage sale” stops. Been hitting the shops lately in my travels. Five or six stops here.

1. Went to a Restore. Found some good wrenches and sockets cheap in all the junk. I was like what’s that flat old wrench at the bottom? Super Bob Cat, kinda different. Bon E Con, Barcalo.
Sockets are an SK, old Mac, Rockwell impact -also different (not sure the mfr.), and Matco impact.

2. From two local pawn shops. Snap On 3/8 extension. A nice but stained Vaughn rubber mallet, $1. Also fished out a Craftsman 18mm wrench socket to add to the others from a ways back, Snap On phillips.

3. Salvation Army! Yes, the Salvation Army finally came through for me with a tool. Proto 1/2” speeder, nice shape, $2.

4. Different Restore. Buck Bros bit, Wards short box wrench, Williams 1-1/16 flare/open end combo, Ford pliers by Vlchek to add to the growing collection. This probably makes 6 or 7. Strange opening aluminum socket in 1/2” drive. Mac, Wright, S-K impacts. Blackhawk. Wright 3/4 drive.

5. Local pawn shop. Craftsman push drill.
Sockets: Proto LA impact, Craftsman 21 & 22 mm, 2 Kobalt, Technician brand
(Looks maybe Kal/ProAmerica?), 4 Snap Ons, 3 Macs, 3 Craftsman :wtf: engraved sockets.

Lugz, that Aluminum Palmgren might be the first ever seen at GJ? I'd post that on the vise thread...

Nice finds!

And Double Early Bird? when did it double?

I already did. But I am expecting 0 comments. Anything that's not a tiny or a big fat whoppin' bench vise find or restoration just becomes a flat spot under the MegaThread's steamroller!

Haha. Sorry, I haven't used that terminology in awhile I guess. Since Friday is the Early Bird, I used to call Thursday the Double Early Bird and Wednesday the Tripe Early bird.
