Just received an original Will-Burt tall jaw versa vise. I have no idea of the year of manufacture, but it is solid and operates smoothly.

I'd like to disassemble it for cleaning, stripping, de-rusting and repainting, but I can't figure out how to remove the sliding jaw. I know the Asian knock offs are reported to use a pressed fit bushing, but I don't want to risk damaging this neat little vise.

Are there any experts here who know how to do this ?

I have restored several of these. Just use the spindle handle, move the dynamic out as far as it will go and then keep rotating the handle, it will pull itself and its bushing out of the dynamic. Its that simple......here is a pic of the last one i did....

You are welcome, I used to know dates on these, but yours is an earlier one. Before you try and chisel out the pins for the logo, look inside and see if they bored the pin holes all the way thru, if so, you can knock them out from the backside. Not all are drilled thru....good luck with the restore......

Well I decided to stop waiting to find the "perfect" vise for this and just use the one I originally bought with this in mind. This Stanley 741 had the clamp cut off when I bought it. 9689023dab6574827dd50b9b13874ecf.jpg

Looks good, chris- the swivel base model looks like you would have to make a small stand to hold it, chopping a clamp-on, you can set it anywhere, and without the stand.

A new vise just arrived. It’s a Record 114 8” heavy duty Engineers vise with quick release, basically in new condition. It weighs 95 pounds.
Here it is pictured with my bench vise, a Record 111 of the same type with 5.25” jaws. It’s a beaut.

Thanks for posting those pics. We don’t see too many of those in these parts.
More makers should bolt on the jaw inserts from the back. I’ve dealt with too many mangled jaw face screws.
Nice find!

Wished it was mine Royce.---Saw it again on Pinterest.---Can't remember who owned it.---Here's another pic.:headscrat

It belonged to my buddy in MA. It weighed 450 lbs I think. He isnt on social media so he allowed me to post pics. He wrangled that into his truck by himself. Luckily he has a small winch located on his pickup.

I know that the new owner is up here in New England. That's all I know.

Very nice, thrumcap.......I really like Records. This is my late Fathers vise, it lives with my sister 6000 miles away, wish I could economically bring it over.
A record "fitters" vise, also around 100 lbs I believe.

Smitty - that is a beautiful early 70’s bullet. Looks very well kept.

Double - I bet that Reed 405 cleans up nice once you strip off the paint.

Chris - I dig that tiny Stanley as a card holder. I think KMScott posted that he was going to be making some swivel bases for vises like this in the future.

Joe - that Prentiss is admirable. Very nice pick up.

Next time you fly over to see her, bring 2 suitcases, separate the dynamic from the body, and check those suitcases. They might be a bit overweight, but that would still be cheaper than crating the vise up and shipping it.

Shift,

that's not a bad idea! No doubt my brother in law would grumble, but I'd happily buy him a cheap chinese vise to replace it. After all he hasn't even mounted this vise properly, it just sits on a stool or something!

Well, I need another 3-1/2" vise like a hole in the head, but I couldn't resist this Parker . It doesn't have any issues other than ugliness and it cost me $20.

Looks just like my 954 which has 4 inch wide jaws. Did they change model numbers on essentially the same vise at some time in the distant past?

(Whisky bottle for scale)

Hello!
New here. I have already harassed Abom70 from YouTube about his vise stand made from a lathe faceplate - awesome!!! I have also been fortunate to have Viceman give me his time, and Scott... I think you blocked my email! Scott, I just wanted to know if you had an 8" that might be coming up for sale. Thats all ;-)

Thinking of the Millscott, makes me recall the Erie Mogul 110! If someone has one for sale then I will buy it! Joe, you know you probably have one buried under all of your 6" vises next to that original Bugatti vise by your 8" lineup! Well out here in NM, I have not had luck finding an 8" vise. It is barren out here! I just buy 3" vises to try to add up to something bigger I guess.

Love the old stout American vises. If you have a nice one you think you might part with... keep me in mind!
Thank all,
Mark

OK as an aside. My Dad just came by so I gave him one of my Columbian #503 vises. Yeah, don't laugh. That's as good as it gets for me. What is interesting is that one said patent pending and the other did not, and one had the jaws attached through the face with flat blade screws, whereas the other had pins from the bottom holding the T-jaws in place. Interesting. I wonder what the time frame difference is for the two.
(sorry I don't do forums, so if I am doing this wrong, let me know)

Welcome to the forum Serrat.---It's obvious you've been bitten by the vise bug and that's not a bad thing, and desiring a huge vise is a perfectly normal symptom of this disease, but you may as well ask these fellows for a kidney rather than one of their 8'' vises.---And they would more than likely give you one before they would get up off of one of their 8'' treasures.---But who knows.---As Outlaw says, "It never hurts to ask".:dunno:

Thank you Grouseman! Yes, this has become a problem. Work is cutting into my time needed to search forums, classifieds, CL, EBay, etc. My wife thinks I am a nut case! Wilton's are nice vises, the baby Wiltons are wonderful, but I was getting to the point of just buying a new 8" from Morgan -- I like their looks better than the big Wiltons (but that also defeats the purpose).

But then I get sanity checks as I read about all these different people who just simply 'picked up' or found a huge vise for $75 or even hell, $500. So then I tell myself to just wait. And then recently, I kicked myself for not moving faster on the restored 8" on eBay.

Vises are akin to Single Malt Scotch, they have a history, a geography, and a time period. :)

That’s all the excuse I need to drink a wee dram or 2 of Laphroaig while I peruse the GJ vise pages. :)

Poor photo of a great old Reed 108 on a heavy cast iron stand. I bought it at an ATSF auction. My favorite vise is a 6" Ridgid that my Dad and I bought new in the 1970's,can't move it around anymore so my every day vise is a 4 1/2" Rock Island. It is very smooth and I love to work at it.

Any pics of your other vises? Love that Reed on the pedestal!
