I don't know why but I just love tool rolls. I tried a search but after 3 pages of only the most peripherally related threads I'm gonna start a thread of my own. I've bought a few rolls off Amazon and they were alright, I hadn't bought a BucketBoss one though but when I saw it in Menards the other day I checked it out and it seemed decent so I bought it and for less than Amazon wanted to boot.
I got home and grabbed the Husky 10pc wrench set I keep out in the barn for the Beetle, trouble already. It's an 11 slot roll for a 10pc set no big deal I'll just have the 11th nice big slot for something extra. Nope, the first 2 wrenches went in fine but then the next three I couldn't fit in the slots at all. Okay let's start from the big end, everything works fine but the 11 & 12mm wrench still take some force to fit through the mouth, whatever I'll live. Now I am limited by the smallest slot being leftover, I'll find something eventually. However the next problem is that about half the wrenches fall completely into the slots, not very handy.
I apologize for not having the pictures inline but for some reason imgbb doesn't really work very well anymore so I'll just add them at the end as attachments. I slid the wrenches so they all stuck out about evenly and marked a line that got them all in a similar range which you may be able to make out as a blue line. Then I pulled the stitches at the bottom, really impressive work considering the thread would just fall apart on its own every third or fourth stitch. Anyway, I ended up miscalculating and cut it too short so the hem on the bottom is a little on the thin side, didn't notice that till I went to trim the inner piece. Regardless I got it all sewed up, tossed the wrenches in and despite that minor hiccup I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. The wrenches in the 2 largest slots kinda flop around but I can live with that. Having them so if I hang the roll up the wrenches stick out so I can grab them like it shows on the package is totally worth the work. Now to see how long the rest of the stitching lasts on it.
For reference the largest wrench 19mm is just a blonde one shy from 9 3/4" long and from the center of that slot I cut off just shy of 2".
ETA: And of course they're in the wrong order, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Thanks 930, I see the goofs I made but I'm still happy with it.
My mom has one of their bucket organizers for her gardening stuff HO, she likes it just fine. 40 years though, I never would have guessed, impressive.

I had an idea... A non permanent solution would be to stitch a line across the bottom. Then you can remove the stitches if you swap sets and want to tailor them again. It's also less work for someone who has no skill (like me--haha). You did much better than I would have managed!

I didn't know they had these at Menards. I see they have some in stock near me. They also have a Bucket Boss tool roll in addition to the wrench roll. I'll take a look when I'm at the store.

Fleet Farm has an Allied wrench roll for $3.

You mentioned buying a few off Amazon. Which ones did you get?

Suggestion for the next one you do. Don't cut anything, just sew along your chaulk line. This will leave unused fabric at the bottom, that might annoy some people...

Also, if you do this, maybe on the short wrench slots, you could carefully slice below your new stitching, through the top layer only and get a few more slots for some more little wrenches? That would leave no top hem on the few new slots, but maybe you could turn down a bit of the fabric hand hem them carefully?

My ex-wife would make me simple tool rolls using old blue jeans. She would cut the legs, leave the side seams and sew up the bottom and make slots. Also a simple hem job to keep the fablic from unraveling. Added a old shoe lace sometimes too to roll and tie it up. Not the fanciest, but worked fine and cheap.

I liked that they didn't rattle or clank in the hand box.

Yeah I considered just sewing across the bottom but cutting open the slots below to make mini pouches hadn't crossed my mind. However the largest one being just shy of 2" deep and getting smaller from there they wouldn't hold much and they'd be far from secure. I do like the idea though. The other rolls I got off Amazon I bought one by Dickies for the wrenches I keep with my motorcycle. It does the job, not too thrilled with the little ties but it does the job. The other one was the CLC socket tool roll IIRC, I gave to my friend for Christmas and he said he thinks it's great. I'd totally go and grab a handfull from Fleet Farm at $3 a pop if the closest one weren't . . . you know, on the other side of lake Mighigan Haha
I have thought about making my own, now I have a better idea of how they're put together. Not that it's complicated but actually having disassembled one gives me something more concrete to go on rather than just speculation. If I grab another pair of pinking shears that could be yet another weapon in the fight against fraying. Thanks for the ideas guys!

I have these same rolls. I too love the tool rolls because much of the work I do outside and away from the tool box. I ended up folding the bottoms of mine up and stitching then in place to shorten the pockets. It works so far. No complaints. The best roll I own is the one my Sunex angle wrenches came in. 3/8" up to 1.25" in a nice heavy canvas roll. If all rolls were like that one, it be awesome.

I think if you go on Youtube Jimmy Diresta made one from some old canvas tarps he had. You will always be certain you have the right size slots that way and cost was minimal. I suppose you do need sewing skills to pull that off.

In terms of how complex this type of a thing is....I've hand stitched them from scratch before. They're stupid simple to make....and I don't have much in the way of sewing skills, unless we're talking about leather holsters and belts of course. Sewing is my wife's department.

Got the tool roll, not the wrench roll. It was a nice gift from a neighbor. Haven't really had a chance to use it but I did notice that the 3 little side pockets (under the flap on the far left side in the photo) are the perfect size for PB Swiss bit racks --that's handy.

I love Bucket Boss liners. When I started working at Sears the crew had 5 guys and me, each of us had a different way to carry our tools. When I left two years later all of them had converted to Bucket Boss!

It's elastic and it is really helpful to keep everything secured.
