Very nice find, I love when I find old brand name tools and can clean them up to be like brand new. Fujiya is a great brand

I was just looking at my crankcase spreader and realized I’ve not shown you guys or seen one on here, so here you go and behind it is my genno hammer from Japan. I love how unique these hammers are compared to others I have. The handle is white oak and feels very smooth

Yeah it was pretty rusty but the teeth were perfect, only the cutter was used and a file fixed that up. And love that hammer, it’s kind of interesting that America focuses a lot more on round faced hammers vs international(at least Europe and Japan from what I’ve seen). I have a Facom French pattern that is my favorite.

Very nice!

Thanks :) It’s probably my favorite tool just because of the sentimental value.

What does a crankcase spreader actually do?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using The Garage Journal mobile app

A crankcase spreader is a tool used in Motorsports applications (motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATV, side X sides) when you have the clutch side, stator side and top end disassembled you use this tool to separate the crankcase halves from the crank. A lot of Motorsport crank bearings are a press fit onto the crank and press fit in both crankcase halves. I do a lot of motor rebuilds for Motorsport applications.
The Genno Hammer from the pic is actually one from Frank, but I see them all over ebay from Japan that look great with custom handmade designs. Kinda like the Higonokami knives I like these hammers are usually forged by one master blacksmith.
Below is my green bell collection of hair scissors, tweezers, and nail clippers all made in Japan and sharper then anything I’ve ever used. The tweezers won the good design award and they will grab even the smallest splinter or hair that others won’t. Good for that hair that starts growing off of your nose and ears after 30 lol. My wife cuts my hair and the hair scissors work really well. The pink stuff is hers.

My Fujiya 90CS has served me quite well for 4 years now. It's meant for flush cutting zap-straps and holding the cut off piece. It does perform that function very well, but I also use it to cut insulated stranded copper wire, which it does without issue. If you cut, say a 4/5mm wire near the base of the cutting blades, it might mis-align the 'wings', but you can really easily adjust them back into place with your own finger. So, these have served me very well in doing automotive wiring repairs.

I love that they have the pads to hold clippings and protect against FOD. Nice finish too

Funny that this pops up the day I broke my filter wrench and need a new one. Anybody use this yet and have an opinion on it? Where did you get it from?

Picked this up off of a Japanese eBay seller for about $36 USD. It's a very nice little kit, with nicely machined/finished bits and a special bit holder for 1/4 sockets. Even the case is very well engineered with the bits fitting tightly (but not too tightly) in their respective well-marked holes, the lid having a very positive snap closure, and the integrated belt clip sitting level when you sit it down on the belt clip side.

They’re way better than the band type filter tools and if you got the room they will get a filter off. Costs relatively cheap I think I paid $20 on amazon JP. Built solid.

I ultimately decided to return it because I got the Facom u.48ul and u.48pl and they were a lot smaller( but also more expensive)

Currently trying different 1/4" sockets and bit sockets. My observation is that Ko-ken 1/4" bit sockets are tiny. Great for working in small spaces but difficult to use without an extension if you have fat thumbs. :)

Size compared to Toptul.

IMG-9191.jpg

I find it difficult to reach round and grip the socket as it is so stubby.

I always use a quick spinner with 1/4” Ko-Ken stuff.. helps enormously I find.

They do not stock them but they are a US distributor for 3-Peaks and can order them for you. Just use their contact info on the website.

I keep buying from Amazon Japan because they sell things so much cheaper. The 3-Peaks DF-220 pliers I have are now on sale at JDV, discounted $12.25 from their regular price of $61.25, but on Amazon they are $26.09 (¥2,806).

Sigh, I wish Amazon JP would ship to Australia. Using a middleman carrier really kills the cost savings...

I tried that with the oil filter wrenches I just received. When I tried to order them through Amazon Japan they came up " Not available for shipping to the USA"
So I contacted JDV and they told me they could get them for me plus as I'm a repeat customer with them I always receive 15% off my orders (even sale items) and they always treat me good.

They should be able too as long as its fulfilled by amazon, unless there is some kind of special restriction for Australia?

Special restriction. Once they introduced Amazon AU not long ago they restricted shipping from Amazon US/JP/etc. - sadly the selection of goods from Amazon AU is pretty pathetic and includes few garage-related things of interest that can be found on the other sites.

Yeah, some of the stores there are OK and will ship direct but some - like i-Tools - won't ship to Oz and have the following on their shop page:

This product cannot be shipped directly to Au Australia from the store. Please use a package forwarding service >>

The packaging forwarding services aren't as cheap as you'd like, but sometimes it's the only way to get hold of the stuff.

Just to clarify. The reason Amazon global sites don't ship to Australia anymore is because of a change in the tax laws passed by the Australian government to protect local retailers.

Yeah, it's interesting the approach online companies took to that - Amazon seems to have played that one differently to some others who just added on the 10% GST surcharge to anything brought in and left things largely as they were

I don't blame them for doing whatever is best for themselves, though, it's not like we're a huge market compared to the USA etc. and the story may well be quite different in 5-10 years re: Amazon AU's stocking of interesting things...

^^^Their website says 108 teeth for that ratchet. Is that correct?

Sorry I didn’t read your comment first yea that’s right, I didn’t know the ratchet was going to be so nice I just wanted the sockets and spinner really but now I love everything in it. I have the koken wobble fix extension sets and the stahlwille locking so I didn’t care about the locking extensions but you know the seem really well made too

I had to see

Those insides look very similar to my Tekton 90T which I still rank very highly of everything I've tried and own. This set has peaked my interest quite a bit. Might have to check them out. Where'd you pick them up at?

Out of the screw removal pliers I have I’m really satisfied with the 3.peaks DS-175TZ. Aside from the engineers ability to grip ultra thin sheet metal I feel like 3.peaks has the superior design for screw removal. Just my opinion.
