I think the owner is asking a bit much. What would be a good price to pay in that condition?

I think Craftsman used that logo from the late 40's to around the mid 60's. I'd guess your box is from the early to mid part of that range.

I saw I box like that a few years ago and the tray was red with curved sides up to the tray handle, like yours. I don't know if the tray in the one I saw was original, but seeing as that makes at least two boxes with trays like that I would say there is a good chance.

I am jealous, that is a beauty.

It's in the 1948 Sears catalog.

In 1948 it was $6.75 if that helps. :dunno: :)

I think those sliding tray ones are pretty cool. I had a chance at one a couple years back and still kicking myself for not forking out the 60$ for it.

Rikki- I've got several variations of dome boxes and 100 was the most I've paid. That was for what I consider the rarest of the dome boxes and it was complete with one original key. The boxes with the hinged hasp and lift out tray are the most common. Finding one with the original tray is much less common, I avoid ones without the tray as finding just the tray by itself to complete the box is about like hunting a unicorn. If I were considering the box in your pictures, I'd want to look it over closer (or have the seller send me better pictures). Are those rust pin holes in it? If it's got cancer I'd move along. On a side note, the earliest trays had 3 removable socket trays-within-the-tray and at some point (I don't know when) the tray color went from gray to red. As far as the value of that particular box, I always hate to "appraise" something as I think different things have different value to people, depending on how bad they want it. My goal is to have one of each variation of dome box (at least nine as best as I can tell) so I tend to pay a bit more than some people probably would for a decent box. I've never found a decent dome with the red tray so, if that box doesn't have cancer, I'd probably go as high as 75 bucks on it. WD40 and fine steel wool will work wonders with that surface rust.

ZRK- I love the cantilever domes. They made two variations of them, the difference being the hasp type.

LF- I wish I had an old car to show, display it exactly as you suggested!
