I managed to get paroled long enough this weekend to hit an antique show. Mostly the prices at those things are sky high. But, there were some deals to be had.
The KampKook camping stove is in great shape, the Drum is dated 1942 and property of Air Force, the empty socket box is for 1/2" drive and is labeled with the national stock number for each item. The inspection lamp is dated 1943 US Army Air Force, US pad lock, 1944 dated shovel and cover. And a neat clip of Barcalo wrenches for our resident Baron of Barcalo.

And, for anyone that was paying attention last year, we know that this 5 gallon drum is made from 22ga steel, has a capacity of 5 gallons, and was made in 1942. (22 - 5 - 42) :lol_hitti

The socket set box looks kind of like the Thorsen 1/2” deep socket set that Tin Medic sent me. Nice find on the old BB set.

So not a garage sale, but the lady I was working for today gave me a tote full of tools with a few cool items in it. I dropped off the cheap power tools and Chinese stuff at the restore on my way home, but kept a few winners.

Almost complete Walden and Thorsen 1/4” drive sets, a wooden level, a #5 jack plane, and, best of all, a Prentiss 155 clamp on vise. The level was still accurate too, or the awning supports I installed were crooked. :bounce:

Saw a pic on Facebook Marketplace advertising an old tire changer.

When saw it in person, spotted that the MFG badge was missing, but did see where the rivets holding the badge would have been as seen in pic 4.

Bought it and have started to clean/disassemble, but still not sure who the mfg and how many parts might be missing.

Here is the pics of it as purchased and if anyone can let me know who mfg might have been and any missing parts, I'd appreciate it.

Mike

Went for a walk today and saw Greenlee nail puller #515 and a very rusty wrench next to it laying in the pile. 40 minutes later and tons of rust - this is Billings and Spencer wrench (seems like 1237)

That old tire changer is really cool! I don't know anything about it, but I'd have brought it home too, for the right price.

Flea market was packed this morning. As soon as there's a little chill in the air it picks up.

Couldn't pass up the baby scootaround, even though it's been repaired with modern screws. That OD green canvas ditty bag underneath is WWII. Some interesting tools, including a Blue-Point Chicago water pump packing nut wrench, a 9/16" T.K.F. CAM-LOC, and a Bon{/}ney 2028S (CV) obstruction wrench. The double offset fixed socket wrench with the hex shank is Duro-Chrome, as are the battery pliers with the box ends forged into the end of the handles.

In the "If at first you don't succeed...' and 'Sometimes you get lucky...' categories, I picked up the wire strippers I missed out on a few weeks ago. Credit to Don (d42jeep) for pointing them out, in post #4830 on this thread linked here, in a mess of tools dumped on a table that I pawed through and left behind a few weeks ago, in post #4825 on this thread, linked here. I ran into the same vendor, that pile had now been reduced to 6 or 7 items, and one of them were the wire stripper-cutters! They are WWII vintage issued to several upper echelon kits. :)

Hit a nearby estate sale late this morning. Had a good selection of old American branded wrenches & sockets but way overpriced. Had the wrenches bound together with tape 3-4 for $X. No rhyme or reason for how they were grouped. Then the 3/8" ratchets were priced at $2-$3 each. Go figure. The little handheld vise was $3 as well. I may go back on the last day when things are supposed to be 50% off. I've got close to 35 ratchets in the shop so I probably should have passed on these but at $2-$3 it's hard to leave them behind. Left to right, SK-Wayne 45170 (smooth as butter), Husky CB-45 & Proto 5249. The Husky is a little rough but works. No marks of any kind on the cast iron handheld vise. I'd probably buy these all day as well at $3. Spent $10 total.

Tx, at 35 Ratchets you doing fine - I'm approaching the 200 mark, and some here are over 700... I don't doubt someone (or two...) are into 4 figures...

I probably have more than 35 in the "daily user" drawer, plus road boxes and such...

I have always been a little weak in the knees for ratchets[emoji2] . You should post your collection over on the ratchet thread. I know some of us would love to drool over them.
I would have to imagine that 3bay is in the 4 figures. I have slowed and am currently at 721 loose not setted ones. The slowing is attributed to shifting focus to Plombs and having to buy another roller to store them as I have a 30" packed full.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

When saw pic of old tire changer on Facebook Marketplace, it was one of those items that knew nothing about, but wanted to learn.

Have it cleaned up and now everything moves freely.

Here’s that 41-S-6010 cable stripper, patented in 1943, and issued to 3rd and 4th Echelon maintenance depots in WWII. Thanks again, Don!

I posted more pics and info on the funky Duro plier-wrench here.

I hit two estate sales today, the first was a crazy hoarder's place about to be bulldozed (power had been off for years, no relatives to be found and a ton of back taxes. Also, serious rodent and water damage.) The second one I went to, had promise (model A in the pics, lots of tractors and forklifts, along with a whole mess of big stuff) but the hand tools were mostly Harbor Freight. I did manage to scrounge these though:

The biggest MT2 chuck I have seen, some Proto crows feet, Plomb sockets, a chisel handle and the smallest working vise I have seen. $5

The hoarder's place was insane though. I went there first, did well, and went back this afternoon. And there was a whole nother layer uncovered! I didn't even really check out the house, so much was stuffed into a two-car garage. Also, there were outbuildings (smelled of piss) to check out, a trailer and so much more. So, without further ado:

There is Plomb, Proto, Snap-on, Armstrong, Williams, SK, NB, Vlcheck, MAC and so on. The highlights are Snap-on swivels, Plomb 5468, NB(I think) socket box, None Better ratcheting adaptor, and so on. I spent $30 between the two stops. There is a good chance I will head back tomorrow to see what else I can dig out. I love sales like this!

No problem. The ones I have here are slightly different but the idea is the same.

I like those kind of sales, but at the same time I have to take a shower after being in those houses. Due to a recent hoarder house I was at, I started seriously purging my garage and house.

The Company I work for is relocating and closing their shop and selling off equipment and tools. Picked up the set of 36” Ridgid Bolt cutters for $20. They look like they have never been used. HD sells them for around $130. 251a303b15126551fd2ddca013128234.jpg
Also grabbed this old Columbian 4” Vise for $20. ac1015f122a92d8eab329b9c9b32bb4e.jpg

A few art deco geometric Barcalos, a Duro-Chrome needlenose, a very early Herbrand "SPARK PLUG AND OIL RESERVOIR DRAIN PLUG WRENCH" for my 'Literal Tools' drawer, and something for either the Kon-Tiki or the bomb shelter.

Pic 2 is that vintage toddler rambler from yesterday.

On a sad note, I haven't seen Jack, one of my reggler vendors at the Geezer Village flea for a month and a half and I fear the worst. He was an oldtimer, moved real slow, rheumy eyes, hard of hearing, but he knew his stuff, he was content with just a little profit, and he was a soft spoken gentleman. I bought some of my rarest tools from him as well as a few old hardware store catalogs that have served me well in research many times over. Last time I talked to him we haggled over the price of a handle for an antique Charles Parker vise and I was going to wait him out. Now I feel bad about that. I hate to 'eulogize' him in post if he's just visiting his daughter or something like that, but it's not like him to miss this many Fridays in a row. He didn't have a cell phone and wouldn't ever give me his house phone number. I tried years ago. I asked the guy who collects the cash at the flea market if he has seen him, and he said, "is that the tall polite old guy always wears flip up sunglasses and a sailor's hat?" "That's him," I said. But he hadn't seen him either. Saddest part is I don't even know his last name to even scan the obituaries.

Found some stuff at an estate sale this morning. Big workshop with supposedly a running Model T coupe and a Model T flatbed truck. Lots of hit & miss engines and old equipment, tools, storage. I picked up the Reed 104-1/2 for $80. Not suckage worthy but I'm real happy at that price. Don't see any problems with it. The handle may not be original but it'll do. I can't seem to pass up these old domino sets. I'll make some wood boxes for each of these and give them a new life. Picked up a couple of NOS Norton Alundum 6" grinding wheels (coarse & fine). I hadn't seen one of the old yardstick or whatever these are called in a long time. Advertising for a seed company. What is the wood (teak?) and brass pulley thing? It says "Gold Seal" on one side of the reel and "Ball Bearing" on the other side. Also, what is the other brass thing in the pic. Looks like you hook wires up to it and engage a circuit. Lastly, picked up an old Craftsman roller. My first Craftsman rolling cabinet with the heritage badge. It's got some rust issues at the bottom but hopefully I'll be able to clean it up. This is actually the first CM Heritage roller I've seen in the wild. Not a bad morning!

It is an old spinning reel - it shows up on fishing sites. Does it have the piece to attach to a spinning rod on the other side? picture attached (hopefully)

EDIT: edit for my brain fart... it is an old fly fishing reel... not sure why I said spinning reel.

It is an old spinning reel - it shows up on fishing sites. Does it have the piece to attach to a spinning rod on the other side? picture attached (hopefully)

Yes it does. And seeing that I thought of a fishing reel but it was just so big and kind of outlandish for a fishing reel that I thought it must be something else. I do have the eerie feeling I've seen this as a fishing reel but with yarn. Wonder if that is just my imagination cause that's weird!

The "Brass thing" may be a very old knife switch? need better pics

Depending on the size of the wood reel, It may be a downrigger reel? I have a couple that are 6 and 7" in diameter.

This is going to be one of those willpower tests for me! I am dying to inspect the contents and use this thing, even though the whole point is to not do so until you need it.

You have the remains of an old telegraph key. It's missing the lever and knob.

A few people have asked when is a good time to turn up at Jake’s flea market on PA rt100, south of Bally. It depends, of course, on whether you are buying or selling. I am buying, and I usually hit it around 7am. A few weeks ago, I arrived at dawn, which was near 6am; it will be later this morning, just two days shy of the equinox. I felt first light had some advantages over arriving an hour later - more to buy, more time to buy it.
Today I pushed a little more and got here just before 5:30am. It’s dark. The stars twinkle above my head as they fade into the slowly lightening firmament. Some vendors are set up, many are still pulling in. Headlights and flashlights, and an occasional glimpse of something vague looming in the inky night. Is it opportunity?
The only thing that registers in my phone camera is the fluorescent glow from the pavilions, glinting off the forty or so vehicles parked nearby. Saturday is not as busy as Sunday, in my experience, weather being equal. I have other plans for tomorrow, though, so here I am, waiting in the dark comfort of my car for an indication that now is the time to start the hunt.
