I am searching for a replacement bolt for the head of my milling machine. The company recently went out of business (another USA mfg gone). The bolt is:

The bolt is plain steel. I don't want a zinc'ed replacement.

A pic is attached.

Head: 5/8” wide, 0.241” thick
Threads are 5/16"
Overall length: 1.750” (longer would be OK)

Threaded section: 0.475” long (shorter or longer might work)
Unthreaded section 1.088” long

Does anyone have a source for something that might work?

Or, if you find one the right diam but longer, cut it and rethread it. Don't need a lathe, just clamp a die in a vise and turn the bolt with a wrench if you don't have a tap and die set

It may help if you actually say who the manufacturer was, as well as the model of milling machine (and part number of the bolt, if you have it)...someone may know of a place that still has parts available.

First identify the diameter and thread pitch in SAE or metric. Then go search the Internet and find one in the correct length and with the head you want. If you are old school, some hardware stores are better than others and there are shops that specialize in nuts and bolts in most areas. Not just Fastenal and Grainger but also purely local shops.

Odds are that you are not going to find that bolt any place besides Rusnok. A 5/8 hex on a 5/16 shank is not standard. I would suggest that you find a 7/16 bolt, 5/8 hex is standard on 7/16 bolts, and turn the shank down to the 5/16 dia you need and then rethread. I also could assist you in this.

You seem inflexible on material. I assume thread pitch too? What about the oddball head size?

You could always use a heavy hex 5/16 bolt which has a 9/16" head instead of 1/2" and a hard Grade 8 washer or a flange bolt also with a grade 8 washer

To get the right length unthreaded portion buy a longer bolt and cut off some of the threaded section

I like this idea. I just checked the minor diameter of 7/16 bolts and you're right -- there's enough diameter to turn the threads off and still have more than 5/16" dia. to rethread.

Get a long 5/16 bolt, cut to length and rethread to proper length
Or you want to keep that head size?

Its not out of the question to use a piece of threaded rod and a nut, plug weld the nut to make it into a bolt....

If the shank is in a shear where threaded section would be inappropriate then i'd go with turning one between chuck and live center and single-pointing the threads.
