Changing gears a bit. While I am waiting on my floor jack chrome to be done I thought I'd start another project.

It's a vintage battery display rack with a built in charger unit to keep 7 batteries fresh until sold

IMG_0535 by don long, on Flickr

I took it apart a few months ago and today I pulled it into the garage and started removing the old paint and rust

2019-09-26 14.19.25 by don long, on Flickr

After about 2 hours of grinding tonight it looks like this

2019-09-26 17.13.29 by don long, on Flickr

I need to sand blast the underside of this unit then give it a good coat of primer.

Holy snake skin Don! I know you are a welcoming person but a 4’ long rattler is a little above and beyond. I hope you gave him a tour path away from the Party Garage.

Oopsy! Mr. Snake would definitely be a conversation piece.

When you said you ground for 2 hours, my first thought was why not sand blast only to read you’ll do that also. Not having sand blasted before, what is your philosophy on when to use a sander, wire brush, media blast or a rust converter (e-tank or chemical) on old rusty items? I have a stand that needs cleaning up/rust removal and I’m trying to come up with the best way to prep it. It’s too expensive to ship back and forth to you so I’m on my own.

Don: he doesn't look happy at all and I think i see his forked tongue in the picture.

did you remove him yourself or call for help? have you or your family or dogs ever been bit by one and do they show up often?

I bet it's another great day in Southern California and you already had plenty on your plate and then you bring home another years worth of gems to restore.

can you set up a temporary propane tank to get the towel steamer working for parties? having an old barber show up to give your friends a shave and a haircut then they can go over to the ice cream parlor sounds like fun.

cheers

Don, that Western Diamondback would make a nice conversation piece for the Western Town -- after it visits the taxidermist.

Bob
I hadn't thought about that and now it's too late

Yep Bob
I showed him the way out of the yard via the big green dumpster

Glad that uninvited guest was not about when I was a guest. Mind you the local native Brown Snake here can be just as big an issue and I have been full on cleaning up as soon as the weather improved when I got home.

Simon
I have no idea where this one came from and haven't seen any others

My wife had over 100 likes on her facebook

The battery display was not in too bad of shape so I decided to just grind the paint off of it but the undersides were too hard to get to so sand blasting was the way to get in there. My sand blasting compressor is not working too well so I didn't feel like fighting it that much.

Hey Shorty, did you show the picture to your wife?

I haven't seen it

Don he must have come over to see what all the fuss was about.

Bobby
He sure snuck in on me

I don’t like snakes.

I leave them alone.
And certainly don’t know your American snakes, but I would wish that one far away from me.

Because he was close to the golf carts I jumped into one and drove it onto the snake leaving about 4" of head and neck. Then I took a pair of branch trimmers and pinned the snakes head between the knives and closed them. that pretty much killed it and then I drove over to the dumpster and dropped it in. No other help was needed except Ann came out with her cell phone light to help see what was happening. she quieted down after I had him by the throat lol

Quote: it WAS about 4 feet long. Is it now two 2 foot long snakes?

No Caddyman
He was still in one piece when he left the place. but I did choke him out

Hey Don, I've read thru the whole thread. Awesome place and love what you can do and can do!!

The snake, you might want to tell the dumpster guys about it. Thoes fangs as I understand it can still inject venom even if the snake is dead.. I may be wrong though.. just don't want anyone getting hurt..

Thanks for joining us Mike
Sorry that the first 100 pgs of pictures were lost when Tinypic's went out
The Snake sat in the dumpster for 4 days prior to it being picked up and I doubt that any hands would handle the rubbush when it gets dumped into the land fill.

FYI
I have a couple of containers full of rusty treasures that need to be refreshed so I will be posting many different projects over the next few years.

That is a cool piece Don! I've never seen anything like it.

Thanks Dave
When I first saw it I thought it was some what unique and had to have it.
I found it in the mountains of western Arizona and drug it home last year.

I hope to get primer on it tomorrow morning.

Todays project is back on the blackhawk floorjack display
While waiting on the chrome to come back I found these jack stands that will look good painted the same color as the jack.

s-l1600 by don long, on Flickr

I sand blasted them then did the bodywork on them and polished the necks to a chrome shine

2019-10-02 11.53.02 by don long, on Flickr

Masked up the necks and put them back into the booth for primer in the morning

Hi Don,

Nice snake! My daughter who lives up in Queensland on 5 acres has had a lot of pythons around lately. There were two in the roof last week, one about 3 metres long!
The attached photo is one at the side of the house eating a bat.

Cheers David and Vanley
PS Agree with Ann re dead snakes!

:wtf: If that snake is 3m long, how big is that bat!?

Don,
Sorry to derail but to bring things back, as usual your restorations are looking great. Really excited to see the Blackhawk come together.

JB, it's probably a Flying Fox. Five foot wingspan and 16 inch body. They carry diseases but otherwise harmless fruit eaters. They are frightening when one lands in a fig tree at night (trust me).

Yes It's a given that mother nature has some real different creatures out there.

I've seen those bats flying over in Australia and they covered the sky and the place got dark while they flue by then it was light again for about a half an hour longer

Strange.

Thanks for all the visits guys. I'm just happy that I got the rattler before he got me.

Don, how did you do the red paint in the grease gun handle. Was that a paint fill job? I always have trouble doing a good paint job in areas like that.

Thanks!

I masked off the sides of the handle leaving me one bigger box (the back side of the handle) to paint red.
After the paint dried I went back over the ridges with fine sand paper to take the paint off. Leaving me the smaller squares painted.

Absolutely love this forum.

So much knowledge and wisdom on here.

Saw those bats on Jersey at the Gerald Durrell Zoo. Lovely creatures.

As a kid I had a pet bat that knew me and lived in the peach tree outside the kitchen door.

It's always nice to hear from you

You ask "what's on the TO DO LIST THIS WEEK"

Well I'll tell you

We have a big Gas Bash planned here for next year. This will be a H U G E get together with all the gas sign guys from around the country. They will be bringing signs and gas & oil memorabilia to sell or trade.

I want the party garage to be a show place worthy of the event

SO

I am going to update the 30's garage to a Pennzoil garage

IMG_4254 by don long, on Flickr

This means that the old signs will come down, the Drill presses will have to find a new home, the work bench will be redesigned and so on

2 by don long, on Flickr

2019-09-23 10.13.09 by don long, on Flickr

2019-09-23 10.12.55 by don long, on Flickr

And the work has begun

2019-10-05 14.25.04 by don long, on Flickr

The place will be gutted and set up like a running shop

Lots of work to do like paint the Alemite bench black and yellow with red accents. the box to the right of the Alemite bench is a lube center that needs to be refurbed and other stuff that is in the containers will be brought out .

DON: that sounds like an AMAZING PARTY and even though your Party Garage is plenty good enough to have it as is your new PENZOIL room should be a knockout.

what year is your Penzoil room maybe 1960's or ?

best of luck with that and it will be a ton of fun watching you make it happen and even though it's a lot of work for you that is an amazing goal and party to work for.

not to change the subject, but I spy a 1920's old Weaver tire changer sitting in the old garage's room like the one i found a few months ago.

cheers and I wish I had some Penzoil stuff to ship to you.

I like the Pennzoil colors, they are close to Signal Gas colors and things look so good in those colors. The garage will stay in the 30's to 50's erawith different car being parked in it from time to time.
Yes I have an old Weaver tire machine and it is missing the tire breaker arm like most I've seen.
It will stay in that garage.

That is going to be awesome Don!

Todays main project was to get an 8'X8' sign up above the pedal cars. I bought it at the Auction a couple weeks ago along with the hot towel steamer for the barber shop.
The sign said PEDAL POWER BICYCLES. The word bicycles was under the pedal power words SOOOO
i sent the sign out to My sign guy and we changed it to be my new pedal car sign

2019-10-08 14.16.34 by don long, on Flickr

What a project getting the sign 15' in the air above all the lights.

Looking great Don. The Python brought back memories of the one I woke up sleeping with in Australia back in 91. That one was over seven feet long. The fruit bats were pretty impressive too.
