These two are done for being users. Going to be a nice addition to the fab bench

No paint. No BLO. No fancy polishing.

Those look great, what did you use?

Pop the pins and pull the key, Flip the key around and you’ll find your date. Wilton put them on the “top” sides of the keys during a lot of 70/80’s vises. This style c1 doesn’t have C1 cast into it. Have two identical to yours. One one on the service truck and one at the shop. 1982 and 1978 iirc.

This may be the case, but I have had two Wilton’s that have been found to be undated.

An early 4”HD bullet and a C2

Nothing on either side of the key.

Just my experience, YMMV

Todays pick up. Not just a vise. But the exact one I was looking for.

The main thing to note is he specifically was referring to 70s-80s wiltons not early models.

Question for those that have sanded down and repainted their vices. I got a 4" Wilton 400s and right now its painted with what looks to be a oil base sand color paint. I want to strip and repaint. Just sand down or does it make it easier to use paint remover, scrape and sand?

A lot of us use Simple Green (SG) to loosen paint and degrease vises to be restored. Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket or heavy duty plastic storage container and a few gallons of SG. Some use it full strength but I usually mix in a gallon of water for every two of SG and have really the same results as full strength. I usually disassemble the vise completely and just throw all the parts in for a good soak of a 2-3 days. Sometimes I forget about them and come back a week later.

Once you're ready to pull everything out just wire wheel everything to remove anything still left and you'll find yourself with a really nice bare metal cast surface perfectly suited for primer and paint. You can get wire brushes to chuck up in your drill or angle grinder but setting up a quality bench grinder with dual 8" wire wheels with no guards has really changed the game for me. I wear a face shield, welding apron and gloves and take all but the biggest vise parts straight to the wire wheels.

If it's house paint or rattle can, use a simple green soak. A bath in a Electrolysis tank can also remove most paint.

I've NEVER used actual sandpaper...

I found a pretty clean Prentiss no. 19 the other day. I just stripped the old paint off and wiped on a thin coat of BLO.2308f09cab98979fcf617c1050b70d0a.jpg4a8bf16b64d3e9e4cfd12658d7d104fe.jpg6b84d0355f07045d7e56cdfad27d1f85.jpg76ff9c2c0cdbe854ad5226ee4b340d4d.jpg

Thanks for the info did not even think about electrolysis...I do have some wire, battery charger and some steel rods might be a project to do.

I think the paint will be some type of a industrial machine type as the vice came from work.

I do it similar to what others mentioned, but I just use wire wheels on a corded drill then a dilute scrub with simple green and plastic/wire hand brushes. Then an overnight soak in Evaporust with a few more occasional plastic brush scrubs, rinse and dry it, then grease the main screw, and rub Johnson’s paste wax all over it. I like the unpainted metal look best.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with 5% vinegar as a inexpensive alternative to Evaporust and must say it works just as well.

What part of Washington State? I saw that vise on Craigslist or OfferUp, but couldn't meet with the seller. There was a nice Morgan I tried to rescue from Vancouver as well, but the seller saw one on eBay for much more than he was asking so he decided to try his hand at refurbishing it and raising the price.

Hello Vise Friends.
Too many projects in the way of vise restorations. But I still got to use them
Just finished rebuilding the forks on my motorcycle. Here's some pictures of how my vises were enlisted:

1st picture; The fork tube is clamped in a Reed pipe vise, which is clamped to a piece of 6" x 4" x 3/8" angle stock, which is clamped in my Parker vise.

2nd picture; I had to drill out a bolt at the bottom of the fork bodies. The Reed pipe vise (holding the fork body) is clamped to the drill table. The job was a success.

3rd picture; Here's the motorcycle complete.

4th picture; We've all experienced this.

Cheers.

If looks could kill she'd be up on charges. Hopefully she’s taken her private jet home already.

Nice ride Mark.---I'll bet that eases down the highway like riding a cloud.

Nice rig you concocted there.---That's like the CIA, what ever it takes to get the job done.---Hollands should have made a deluxe model Star Vise for that.---They should have anticipated that the Fat Bob and the Low Rider were just a light bulbs click away.

Nice Grouse Face on a kid who hasn't graduated from the school of hard knocks yet.---Professor Time will teach her many things.

Smitty: I actually feel sorry for Climate Girl. At her age, she should be doing the fun stuff that teenagers do.

VA: Thanks for the compliment. It's a 1993 Kawasaki Voyager. Farthest I've ridden in one day was 356 miles. Looking forward to fall riding.

So....
Who ended up with this:

Thanks for the tip va!
It’s unusual enough that I decided to part with some of my vise funds so that it could go into my collection.

shift: I've never heard of Hibbard, but it looks like a really well made homeowners vise. Is there more to it tthan that?

scooternut:
Amazing score! GJ is probably the worlds biggest repository of vise knowledge in the world. Those of us who have been here for a few years, and MORE than a few years, have not seen very many 5198s at all. The consensus of opinion is that yours might be number 8.

Congrats!

If the seller didn’t even know it was a Craftsman, you probably got it for a real “you ****” price too! The envy and drool emojis don’t seem to do justice to your latest acquisition.

Anyone have a Fray Merchon vise?

Also I have been gently and obnoxiously harrasing someone about selling me their 2” Prentiss. So I see this on Pinterest and think well that would be cool to mount a small vise on.
Is this a one off or were these made in production?

Grouse, did you just pick those up?
Grumble grumble.... my location *****!
Grumble grumble.... nothing on CL and eBay is ****.
I depend upon you all to sell me your vises. I have been working with two generous members and will soon share one purchase on here to show the generosity of this forum. Again though, I do not get blessed with those wonderful garage sell prices but the people on here are wonderful!

An oblique view of the base of the pallet container on a scale for a new acquisition from a generous board member. More to come... scale reads about 85#.

Make sure you use steel/iron wire in the soup, not copper - Re-bar tie wire works well, Coat hanger wire also works.

Outlaw is right. Also, never use stainless steel in the soup. You’ll end up with small amounts of Hexavalent Chromium. You don’t want any of this toxin around.
