Hey guys...has anybody seen a stamped number like this one on a flat nosed Reed?

Having a swivel base, it is certainly NOT a model 103, the numbers stamped into the side.

Off the top of my head, it should be marked 203 in cast in not stamped numbering.

But having a flat nose disqualifies it from being a date code of January 1903, right?

Inventory number???

Those Reeds I believe had an -S suffix to denote swivel base and -N to denote fixed. So that is a 103S.

That style came after the R models, so definitely not over a century old. Most likely 70s.

The base was optional I think, it has 3 mounting holes. I have a beautiful 104S.

When Reed went to the N series in 78'-79', they stuck with the 100 series numbers and could add a swivel base to it. N was stationary and S was swivel.
these ran through 1983-85. it is a 103.
it will have a date on it. it will have a split nut on the spindle. it will not however have a screw in the nut pin as previous R models had.

post the dates in the reed thread if you could. Love these style logos. hate the reed style jaws though...

Looks similar to my Carl Froh (CFROH) vise. Was the Cfroh factory close to there too?

No, they are independent, different state (but also part of what became east germany), founded in Schmalkalden in 1911, they also had a factory in the western part of germany, producing special steel pipes. That one survived the war and when the socialists came to power was where the company stayed. Vises and many other things were produced in Schmalkalden. The area was rich in iron ore so for example in 1554 there were 225 smith shops. After the war that town became one of the big combines (enterprise), they produced tools (WMW stamp) and drills with addons for these to use them as engine for skill saws, table saws, grinding wheel, hedge trimmer, sanders, etc etc). So your vise is <=1945, don't think they made them in west germany, only pipes there.
Attached photo is from 1920/30.

The similarity is probably because this "System Koch" seem to be widespread at that time.

There is another vise of that look, stamped with a S overlaid with an Z: Spannwerkezeuge Zeulenroda. Little town that was full of industry, for example Carl Kneusel (CKZ stamp) foundry and factories (all taken away by the the russians after the war, but I guess that's where they built on to make the new factories).

I found this little gem listed as a vice on the local CL. The seller had it listed for $75. I offered $60 which he accepted. Thanks to all the bad influence on GJ I knew exactly what it was. I had a friend pick it up from the seller in a different town. It is the heavier iron model. I thought it was the jr. but I was happily surprised it was bigger one. I have no idea about the vise on it. It looks to be made for the arm but I cant tell.

If anyone has any info on this please share.

The Filers would be much better than a std bench vise for access, but you might want to look into a pattern makers vise (AKA Coach makers) as its jaws has even more access.
I've found a Parker 674 1/2 that I'm hoping to get. It will require shipping which is the only hangup. Other than that, it looks really nice.

Not quite at sleek looking as the Reed 424 1/2 in my opinion, but it should do the trick nicely

On that note, what is the best way to ship an 80# vise? USPS won't ship that heavy.

Those vises are different. The main difference in the description is that the old C3 is listed as made of ductile iron and the new one is made of cast iron. Big difference. Ductile iron is much stronger than cast iron and not nearly as brittle. Ductile iron will bend and deform whereas cast iron will simply break. There are slight differences in the size of the 2 vises also, but those are minor. The new vises are listed as being available at the end of the year so it looks like they are making them now.

Fedex express will do up to 150lbs. maybe split it into two or three boxes to make damage less likely. I routinely ship parts heavier than that via FedEx.
Thanks! That's a great idea. I didn't think about separate packages

Since nobody is shipping these Heuer Primus D.R.P. 6" ones, unless the vise costs 90 bucks, you gotta buy locally :) 35 €. Jaws need some work. Offer has been sitting since february, kinda never saw it. If the person it's intended for doesn't want it, it's up for grabs.

I often need to hold a piece of round bar or more often a bolt vertically. Always envied those craftsman vises with the vertical v slots in their jaws so I made this jig for my user vise. Should come in very handy and a more secure mar free hold than the V grooves (which actually would have been plenty good enough....LOL). Just some scrap steel.

Thanks Mr W. Yes, I have a set of pretty crappy HF letter punches. First time I've used them after maybe ten years of ownership. They are marginal at best!

That's a really nice pickup for $60, the price of used Wilton Powrarm's has really gone up in the last year.

Your Wilton 307 vise was actually designed to mount on the 301 Powram. Wilton advertised the 307 vise from around (1950-1966). I've attached some catalog scans with more details.

Pulled the trigger. This will be my first vintage vise. Will replace a little 4" Craftsman and will be primarily used for gunsmithing, knife making, and hand tool restoration. Thanks to all for the input8c1e93b6c35ee2cec24bb2a67e051f05.jpg

Ken, for threaded fasteners, a quick fixture is a nut the thread size, cut on one point only, and threaded on. some times I'll thread on an uncut nut plus the cut one for a more secure hold (Space them out...).

The cut nut acts as a clamp as it upsets in the vise jaw

You could also make a second block like the one you made, only tap drill it, then tap the holes before cutting it in half like you did there.

Where's this buyer when I want to sell something?

There's not a vise on this Earth I would even pay 1/2 of that money for.

Even this one? :)

Must be 7 only. The thread in question really has lots of conversation about the 519x series of vises in general. The vise for sale that I posted a link to was not a 5198 but if I'm remember correctly was a 5197. It was a highly spiffed up and polished version of the 519x series and at the time I thought others would enjoy seeing it. Sorry for the confusion.

Chris.

Wow, thanks. 70 lb working limit too! I will admit. I really didn't know what I was getting into with this. I had seen what I thought was all hype here about the powrarm. I figured it was a great price and if I didn't like it I could easily sell it. I think what I mostly saw was the junior. This is really much larger and robust that I would have ever thought. To top it off I think I am going to get a decent amount of use out of it.

Thanks Garage Journal

Yeah those 301s are nice, I've got one and plan to put my 825 toddler on it. The 303s are the same essential design but hydraulic (versus mechanical like the 301) and I believe the working load for those is more than double at 150lbs!

(New member; my first GJ posting). I was pretty surprised to see my new vise shown on the forum! Thanks DaveThorik. I bought this repaired Offset Holland's for $100 from CL posting. 5" smooth jaws and opens 9". The guy had purchased it over the weekend at a blacksmith show in Dayton OH but didn't know it was repaired until after. He called it a Sheet Metal Vise, but I think maybe woodworking? Works smooth, jaws are square, repair on dynamic jaw is nearly invisible except from the bottom. Will plan on strip & repaint.

I saw that! I just had no idea it could hold that ball/socket so well with a simple lever throw or turn of a small knob!
