No eye TX!

A knot on a braided cord bonded and wrapped onto the tip - somewhat flexible.

I have been picking up Tonka toy trucks for a fellow I know collects them. The other day he gave me this curved adjustable wrench. After a scrubbing in soap and water, and carefully moving the jaw a few times, it works well and is tight.

It is a 12" Queen City, marked "BERGMAN TOOL MFG. CO. BUFFALO, HEW YORK U.S.A." on one side, and "12 IN. QUEEN CITY GURANTEED FORGED STEEL" on the other side. The square hanger hole is 7/16".

Bergman also made "BLUE BIRD" brand battery tools. I have a good variety of them, so this wrench will live in that drawer.

Stopped at my local Restore last night and found these 3/4" drive sockets

among a bunch of Craftsman (got them too). Guess I now need to find a 3/4" drive ratchet!

I've seen that people are using Evaporust on tools. Would it be safe to soak sockets in it? Thanks!

Prov -thanks for the details on th Boker. I figured they were like the Cannon plug pliers with the jaw inserts. These are cool though, being all steel. It seems they are more common than I thought. Nice pickup on the Bergman btw.

LS i sure hope you scored that Craftsman extension. That's a rare bird.

Yes. I should try to track down that set of rope-knurl sockets I spotted a few weeks ago. They’d look good with this. I don’t know what was in that Craftsman Vanadium steel (besides vanadium), but it sure keeps it from corroding like a lot of other steels of the era. i can hardly bear to leave the DBEs, pliers, etc behind (though I did this weekend, because they were all dupes).

I was near a Restore I don't normally get to today, so I swung in. And boy, was I glad I did that!

A 1/2" reamer, Proto breaker bar and extension and the two redish boxes. What is in those boxes?

Starrett leveling jack set and V-block set, both complete. $12.75 for everything.

Thanks to that different parking lot and one oddly placed vendor, this is what I found from him alone.

Two olive drab bags, one marked Unicor USA, one China.

Found a few surprises in one pocket when I got home.

attachment.php

Some tape and Goo Gone
tiny Morris tap set in a wood box
Bonney, Crescent, and Diamond adjustables
Old long wood chisel too rusty to view a maker
Sheffield and Smith & Wesson pocket knives
pink Snap On pick
a Japanese metric tool kit

attachment.php

The best part was a box of rusty sockets. First thing to catch my eye was a large Snap On 1-1/4” socket. Further inspection led to a few more rust covered pieces I was happy to rescue. They look a lot better now after some quick cleaning.

3 snap On sockets
Craftsman 1/2” u joint
Williams rotating 1/2” extension
Blackhawk 1/2” ratcheting adapter
Ampro 3/8 offset ratchet
Craftsman 3/8 tri-wing
Master Mechanic 3/8 Taiwan ratchet

and a pocket knife with a rusty shackle, so I wasn’t expecting much, but when I opened it, turned out to be a Camillus in beautiful shape.

attachment.php
That Camulus pocket knife is a military issue electricians knife. The screwdriver blade locks and is sharpened on one edge for skinning cable. I always filed mine dull for safetys sake.

I didn't spend a dime today. But I did get a kick out of this former hinge handle - crudely plug-welded permanently in the 90* angle position. Somebody reeeeeeally wanted an old-fashioned offset or L-handle! Worse part of the story is - it's an early CRAFTSMAN BE.

Tuesday and Wednesday seems like odd days for an estate sale, especially when the only advertising is a fairly short / boring description in a Craigslist ad. No signs aside from in the yard. I didn't see the ad until yesterday (second day), so I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of good stuff left.

This was being done by the family and their primary goal was to clear things out. I was happy to oblige. I paid $90 for my pile and if I can get away from work again today I plan to go back to see what I may have missed.

Picture 1: Snap On

Picture 2: Williams and a neat stainless tray

Picture 3: Neat Esso aluminum hard hat. I specifically asked the family if this should be kept with them and they declined.

Picture 5: More random stuff, railroad track anvil

Picture 6: 6lb sledge, 8lb sledge, Kelly Perfect single bit, Kelly Perfect double bit, Collins single bit

Picture 7: Hammers, nail puller hatchet, files, draw knife

I've still been picking here and there but with my mother in law going downhill and passing away recently I haven't posted much. Here are a few other interesting things that have come up in this neck of the woods:

Bonus Picture 4: Sun cabinets that I picked up for my dad for Christmas. Will store them here until then. The seller had tons of NOS Sun items. He's having surgery today and is a pretty long drive away but I plan to go back and look around more soon.

Bonus Picture 5: Ammco shaper I picked up last month. I missed my Atlas shaper and this one is in just about as nice condition.

Bonus Pictures 6 and 7: NOS WWII era Utica pliers. I hadn't posted them here but I did start a separate thread on them: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=430967

Here is a neat collection of old tools I picked up from a guy for $5.00.

One cool item of note: the two tools in the middle are stamped "Heyco West Germany". I found that they were made for Mercedes, BMW, and VW. The wall came down in 1991 so they were made before then but I don't have a date. Any ideas?

The others:

Vintage 1930's "Federal 4" Perfect Handle style screwdriver with no wood

Ford wrench, is it for a Model A?

OxWeld brand #1 open ended wrench for torches/tank, Year?

9/16"-1/2" Billings Open End S-Shaped Wrench USA, Year? what was it used for?

1930's Bonney Vixen 8" Double Alligator Wrench w 3 Threaded Bolt Holes

BARCALO Buffalo USA 9/16" Manifold 5/8" Starter 12-point Box End Wrench

Vintage die stock holder, just says USA and Drop Forged

Curved blade, spring loaded scissors, no markings

Longer needle nose pliers, no markings

So a couple of wees ago I had mentioned I'd like to find a protractor head for one of the small 6" combination squares.

A week of so ago I did find a smaller center finder. but it didn't not fit the steel rule in any of my 6" squares...

Today I was putting some new things away in the tiny tools box and saw the 4" square I had completely forgotten about:

Low and behold, it FIT! It also ID'ed the maker! :bounce:

attachment.php

And in comparison to a std size square and the smaller 6""

attachment.php

And an interesting Stacked Pic:

attachment.php

So now to find a protractor head!

Outlaw,
Do you know if a protractor head was ever made for the 6 inch combo squares? I cannot recall ever seeing one. The adjustment knob is upside down on the 4 inch. My 4" combo square is my most used, whether work or home I generally have one close by when working.

Merc! good to see you back , sorry for why you have been otherwise occupied...

And Yeah, you ****...

Alinc, I mentioned a few weeks back I'd like to find one, but I don't know if they were ever made. :dunno:

Nut is now fixed - thx for pointing it out.

EDIT: I just checked Starrett's current catalog, no Protractor heads for either the 6 or 4"...

Hi, first time posting
I'm slowly working on an old atlas drill press, and I'm going to need to flip the spindle pulley soon so, I've had my eye out for a nicer 3 jaw puller. I picked this 3 or 2 jaw puller with slide hammer up today for $20. Everything is there except the screw tip and 1 jaw pin, think it will clean up nicely. A quick search hasn't brought up anything like it. Wondering is anyone knows anything about this one?

you should be able to get a pin that wil work from a decent hardware store.

Not sure what you mean about a "screw tip"? Better pics maybe?

As to using a slide hammer on a DP pulley, Atlas was fond of using Zamak on pulleys and many other parts. Zamack is somewhat like pot metal, and VERY brittle. You are likely to break the pulley if not handled carefully...

I think by screw tip he means the pointed part that goes directly onto the stationary shaft that is being pulled against. Just a guess though.

I suspected I would find a thread like this. I don't have time right now to read 268 pages, so I hope I don't commit a faux pas. I'm not even sure I'm allowed to post images...Anyhow, I went to an estate sale on the Sat of Labor Day weekend. I spotted this in the garage, and immediately dismissed it as on of those crappy sets you see. When I looked closer and saw the price-$10-I was even less impressed. But....when I took a closer look, I realized it was a pretty well-made set and didn't have any obvious damage other than the typical dirt/spiderwebs and the locks being broken. So I bought it and it cleaned up nice! It does say "Taiwan" on it.

Hello and welcome! What brand is your skid hammer ? That may help your search. Also , as you get to work on your drill press, post progress here !

:+1: I NEVER see them in their proper pairs, let alone NOS!

Those are Starrett 271C V-blocks. Kind of unusual, I believe they are for less precise work since they are not ground. And only 1 clamp is original, it didn't come with 2. The rod is original, to keep the blocks in alignment.

My guess is they are for holding round stock to drill side holes in while on a drill press.

Still a nice find for that price!

Picked this up at a rare Wednesday garage sale. It a scale!

I'm going mostly to garage sales listed on craigs list. Normally the cool thing that caught my eye is gone by the time I get there. This Hanson Weight Master goes up to 250 lbs. Good news I can't break it.

Don't know what it was used for the tray is kinda small for 250 lbs of stuff.

Thanks y'all. It feels good to be back in the game. I hope everybody here is well. My wife is 37 and has been taking care or her mother since she was dang near in grade school. We're just trying to find our new "normal"...much more free time but it comes with an odd sense of guilt.

Anyhoo, I went back to the same place yesterday and found...

Miscellaneous tools

Equipto 18 drawer cabinet full of hardware, tools, locks, etc.

Nerf bow and rotary phone (will have some fun with my kid with these)

Shop built aluminum / wood dolly

And the star of the show, a Thomas Truck & Caster warehouse cart. Trying my darnedest to convince the wife of its merits as a coffee table.

I spent another $60 which is a little more than I wanted to spend but I wasn't leaving there without the cart. They were stuck on $60 for it, but did humor me while I haggled by putting things on top of it...until I exhausted their patience for that amount.

I'm having a garage sale myself tomorrow, so some of this will get put outside to recoup my money. If any GJ members are near Baton Rouge, LA, come on by for some discounts...GJ "secret handshake" or not.

Very cool!! What do you suppose that yolk/hook was for, Merc? Something to pull that dolly/warehouse truck around with, I get that, but what? If you find any markings on that thing, let me know. Also, when you get a chance, please post photos in the Vintage Hand Trucks thread, linked here.

The wood appears to be original given the markings on the bottom. I was going to include that picture but hit the picture limit...it's now attached. The second picture shows a similar cart and the dolly used to pull these around a warehouse. I'll post something in the linked thread shortly.

Also, you've got a PM.

Bad news/but good news day at the flea market for me.

The bad new is I almost got skunked. I bought this Thor tire iron by Bridgeport Hardware and Manufacturing.

The good news is I bought it from Jack - the oldtimey vendor I've been a little worried about. He's fine, just down in the dumps/irritated by low sales. HAHA. I couldn't walk away without buying something after hearing that, and I like the funky abbreviated logo.

Also met a guy who was buying a few things from him, including a Baxter's patent double open end adjustable and a little "English Made" (probably King ****) bike wrench. Younger guy, which is neat to see. Ironically, he bought the antique Parker vise clamp handle I was wanting to talk Jack down on a few months ago. We got to talking and he showed me pics of his vise collection, which tops 200 in number. He's got some rare oldies. He reads GJ but doesn't post. Right here in my back yard! Just goes to show. There are more of "us" than we think out there! :)

Went back one more time...I swear I'm done. I spent $40 but I got the dolly to the cart! Or at least a dolly from the same manufacturer. It's not in as good of shape as the cart, however it shows some original paint and is stamped appropriately.

Since we are back in the Bay Area, we hit a couple of fairly local estate sales. The first one was in Orinda, CA and was pretty slim pickings. I did pick up a protractor since Outlaw had mentioned one recently. Those items are in the first picture. The second sale was in the Oakland hills and was much more to my liking. There was plenty of Powr-Kraft in the garage and my wife found pliers and a stubby Phillips during her search of the house. She often finds tools in the kitchen junk drawer. The Channellock end nippers are the only big ones I’ve seen. The Duro box was rough and empty. I’m not sure why I couldn’t leave it behind. I grabbed the rusty saws since I am putting together a WW2 Carpenter’s set and I’m trying to find appropriate examples. At $1.00 each they didn’t put much of a dent in the budget.

Hit a retiring mechanics sale today. Went after the first rush to avoid the guys going nuts over the Snap-On stuff since I wasn't willing to pay the going rates for the Snap-On anyways.

So kind of bottom fed on the non-Snap-On stuff. Probably go back tomorrow looking for some stragglers.

Vulcan metric shorty set, Nice set of NAPA Pro USA metric stubbies, and a partal Snap-On set priced okay.

Wich garage sale season ending, I have been seeing some really nice estate sales come up, and I have taken advantage of this. Yesterday, I drove north for what I thought would be a big, fancy house, but turned out to be a pack-rats place, but he did have good taste in tools and hardly ever used them.

Two partial Giller 1/4 sets, with extra goodies added!*, Proto and SK ratchets, Herbrand ratcheting adaptor, misc. Proto and Williams, Millers Falls push drill, extra points for the drill, an almost complete set of Moody jewelers screwdrivers, hand countersink, Klein linesman dykes, and two odd but nice pliers.

Today, I found out about a heating shop closing, so I made sure to start at that sale, picking up the following:

Snap-on and Bonney boxes, Proto metric (the ones I was looking for!) Williams, Snap-on, Bonney and Duro refrigeration sockets, a Herbrand extension and a Henckels razor. $15 for all of that. Here is a close up of the razor case:

The next stop was a bust, which I should have known from the address, and the one after that was being clean out of tools as I was walking up. But I did manage to find these for a buck:

A small fishing scale and a Snap-on extension.

Then, as I was heading home, I decided to stop at the local scrap yard, to look for machining brass. They also have used tools for sale at $5 a pound. Not the cheapest, but sometimes it is worth it.

Found the brass, at $4 a pound it is cheaper than having it shipped, also found a Belzer metric wrench and a vintage 4-way. Here is a close up of the 4-way:

All that came to $32. Not too bad.

*I think they threw all the misc. 1/4 into the boxes, as there was random Snap-on, Proto LA, Herbrand, and even the hex bits were all USA.
